Mexico City has seen an influx of people migrating to the historic metropolis, especially during the pandemic when remote work made it possible to work from different places. Currently, 1.6 million Americans live in Mexico, according to the State Department, and Mexico City is the fifth rated destination for digital nomads globally, according to nomadlist.com. He emphasized Mexico City isn’t cheap, but in comparison to other countries digital nomads are migrating from, it’s considerably more affordable. “If you’re making your salary in U.S. dollars, pounds, Canadian dollars, you’re better off living in Mexico City.” Romero said. He believes those areas with higher numbers of digital nomads are already economically out of reach for most of the locals.
Tech startup GravyWork racked up an estimated $500,000 in costs due to a surprise from a remote worker, WSJ reported. CEO Alex Atwood didn't register his business in California and Texas, where an employee spent time working. Some workers take advantage of remote work policies by lying to their bosses and co-workers about their location. As a result, Atwood said that his company racked up between $20,000 and $30,000 in taxes, registration fees and penalties in surprise bills. A Berlin-based remote worker even went so far as to set up a personal computer with a VPN so the company can't track his location.

It is a professional fantasy turned reality for some: Escape the office and travel the country, even the world, working remotely in rented beach houses and ski lodges or, on a leaner budget, a home on wheels while living the #vanlife. Digital nomads, as these wanderers call themselves, say their adventures can be thrilling. They also describe an unsexy side of maintaining a career on the go. Complicated taxes, breakdowns on remote highways and pangs of loneliness can weigh down free spirits.

The couple moved to Rio, where their two-bedroom apartment near the beach is half the rent. We moved to NYC in summer 2018, and my partner had promised me "two winters." Brazil won me over when I realized my income would stretch five to six times as far there as in the US. In Rio, we pay 5,000 reals, or about $1,000, for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with a home office and 24-hour doorman. We split that cost, so rent costs me about 2,500 reals a month.
LISBON, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Portugal is likely to scrap its "golden visa" programme giving wealthy foreigners residence rights, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Wednesday, saying that the 10-year-old scheme had already fulfilled its role. Speaking at Lisbon's Web Summit, Europe's largest tech event, Costa said several visa schemes offered by Portugal were currently being re-evaluated and the golden visa was one of them. Costa said Portugal wanted to continue to be attractive, with one example being its recent law, enacted on Monday, that created the so-called digital nomads visa. It gives foreigners with high monthly income from remote work to live and work from Portugal for a year. read moreReporting by Catarina Demony; Additional reporting by Patricia Rua; Editing by Andrei Khalip and Angus MacSwanOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoMEXICO CITY, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Mexico City's mayor said on Wednesday she wants to boost the number of 'digital nomads' in the capital after signing an agreement with short-term rental platform Airbnb, despite fears the influx is pricing residents out of the rental market. Average daily rates for short-term rentals across Mexico City jumped 27% to $93 in August 2022 compared with the same month in 2019, data from market research company AirDNA shows. Airbnb is also opening its platforms for Mexican residents to create tourism experiences around their daily activities, according to Sheinbaum. The partnership between Mexico City's government and Airbnb is also backed by UNESCO, United Nations' cultural agency.
The new "second home" visa allows foreigners to stay for five or 10 years. Applicants must have at least $130,000 in their bank accounts to apply. The country is focusing on its tourist capital, Bali, in an effort to lure in visitors for longer stays. "The goal is to attract foreign tourists to come to Bali and diverse other destinations," said acting Director General of Immigration Widodo Ekatjahjana at the launch of the visa on Tuesday. The digital nomad lifestyle is growing in popularity as pandemic-enforced working styles such as remote work become more common.
Lona Alia and her husband are digital nomads, working remotely while traveling the world with their children. They save money this way through "geo-arbitrage," living in lower-cost countries while earning a US salary. Expenses like food and childcare are much cheaper in the countries she visits than in the US, Alia said. Nearly 17 million Americans describe themselves as digital nomads, a 9% increase from 2021 and 131% from 2019, MBO Partners' 2022 State of Independence study found from a survey of more than 6,000 US adults, including 901 current digital nomads. Alia says the geo-arbitrage of living in lower-cost countries has allowed her family to save "so much money."
