Roem, 39, already had two comfortable reelection victories in her northern Virginia House of Delegates district. Only two folks who saw the mailers phoned her and she’s having lunch with one of them to talk things through. ___HER INNER MAYORAs a trailblazer for trans politicians, Roem is celebrated in Democratic and cultural circles. Her slogan for the 2023 campaign was “Fixing roads, feeding kids.” Much of Roem’s social media feed reads like a transportation diary — or the work of a mayor. In her first two campaigns, Roem had her own past investigated, to avoid being blindsided.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Japan's Nissan Motor (7201.T) reported on Thursday it had more than doubled its operating profit for the July-September quarter, beating analysts' estimates, boosted by steady sales in North America and Japan and a weaker yen. The company reported a 127% rise in July-September operating profit to 208.1 billion yen ($1.38 billion), compared with an average estimate of 155.9 billion yen in a poll of 10 analysts by LSEG and a 91.7 billion yen operating profit in the same period a year earlier. The automaker raised its full-year forecast by nearly 13% to 620 billion yen due to a favourable impact of a weak yen and improvements in global retail sales, excluding China. The forecast compared to a 570.1 billion yen average profit forecast in a poll of 19 analysts by Refinitiv.

REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Nov 8 (Reuters) - France's Renault (RENA.PA) has cut its stake in Nissan (7201.T) to 15% from about 43% by placing 28.4% of the Japanese automaker in a French trust, the companies said in an alliance statement, putting them on equal footing. The new agreement for the restructured alliance between Renault, Nissan and their junior partner Mitsubishi Motors (7211.T) came into effect on Wednesday, the car makers said in the statement. The companies had already said in January that Renault would put roughly 28% of Nissan in a French trust to make them more equal partners. Nov 9 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. Producer and consumer price inflation figures will be released, the highlights of a regional calendar that also includes Japanese bank lending, trade and current account figures, Indonesian retail sales, and Philippines GDP. Global yields are moving too - the 10-year Japanese Government Bond yield is back below 0.85%, having come within two basis points of 1% last week. The decline in U.S. bond yields is removing some of the dollar's shine, which in turn is allowing Asian currencies to fight back. Yen traders on Thursday are also eyeing Japanese bank lending figures for October and September's trade and current account report.

Nearly half of Ford dealers said they have "no trust" in their franchise in new survey. Ford dealers have had a tough year balancing EV demand. AdvertisementAdvertisementIt's been a tough year for Ford dealers, and it's becoming clear some are losing patience. Ford came in dead last in a recent survey on dealers' level of trust in their franchises, with 46% of Ford dealers surveyed by Kerrigan Advisors saying they had "no trust" in their franchise. This breakdown in trust and pessimism about the future shouldn't come as too much of a surprise after the year Ford dealers have had.

The little rhinestone bedazzled ring you’ve slapped over the manufacturer’s logo on the steering wheel has got to go. Car owners should not affix hard stick-on decorations to the center of a vehicle’s steering wheel, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an announcement Monday. People should immediately remove any decorations they may have already put on their steering wheel, the agency said. Most passenger vehicles today have driver-side airbags that, in a serious impact, deploy from the middle of the steering wheel. (Nissan recently had to recall some vehicles because their steering wheel logos could come loose.)

Drivers told Insider the tiny car is a "blast" to drive and perfect for driving in busy cities. AdvertisementAdvertisementJapan's best-selling EV is a tiny car that sells for just $13,000 — and drivers have told Insider exactly what they like best about it. "A smaller electric car is more sustainable and suits a lot of people's actual driving needs. I think that's at least partly why bigger electric cars, like Teslas, are not so popular here," he added. "I think Japanese automakers underestimated the appeal of electric cars here for a long time," he said.

Why EV charging is still such a pain

Power show that, despite more and more EV chargers being available, EV owners are actually getting less satisfied with public charging. When it comes to consumer satisfaction, EV charging is in some very poor corporate company. Away from home, charging your EV costs more than charging at home, sometimes twice as much. A ChargePoint electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Lafontaine Kia dealership in Detroit, Michigan, US, on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images“Safety is paramount,” said Rick Wilmer, chief operating officer of EV charging provider ChargePoint.

John J. Kim | Tribune News Service | Getty ImagesDETROIT – United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain wants to expand the union's battle from the Detroit automakers to Tesla , Toyota Motor and other non-unionized automakers operating in the U.S. The UAW has previously failed to organize foreign-based automakers in the U.S. The UAW has previously discussed organizing Tesla's Fremont plant in California with little to no traction in those efforts. "Workers at Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and others are not the enemy — they're the UAW members of the future," Fain said. That presents a series of challenges to established automakers like Nissan, which have followed global strategies for decades. The market has been fragmented, and customers' acceptance speed is also different," Uchida said. "So what's important is how much we can start to localize in each respective market," Uchida said. But many of those new Nissan EVs will no longer be global models. For instance, EV customers in China are very sensitive to pricing – but they also want the latest technology, which they've come to expect from the fierce competition between the many domestic Chinese EV makers.

But the UAW’s ambitious plans to organize Tesla and other non-union automakers face steep odds. To grow, the UAW will need to gain a foothold at non-union automakers, which produce more than half of the cars assembled in the United States. Historically, UAW talks with the Detroit automakers have been closely watched by non-union automakers and suppliers. Anti-union companiesThe UAW will have to overcome weak protections for labor organizing in the United States and automakers’ aggressive tactics to defeat unions. It may be easier for UAW to organize Volkswagen and other European automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz than automakers from Asia, experts say.

One of them said that the cut off point could be closer to 6 billion euros ($6.33 billion). Some analysts had already questioned Renault's hoped-for valuation of up to 10 billion euros, with some suggesting the carmaker should pursue alternative options to raise cash. De Meo said in September that the listing could value Ampere at between 8 and 10 billion euros, above the French carmaker's own current market capitalisation of 9.55 billion euros. Other EV makers have seen their market value fall sharply in recent months. With more data at hand than theoretical projection, the evidence is overwhelming: Universal basic income is working nearly universally.
