I always rise to the occasion; even after all of the traumas and the downfalls, I’ve always risen.”Indeed, in the months leading up to the Paris Olympics, Biles has risen like never before. That medal haul could grow in Paris, where Biles is likely to compete in the women’s team event on Tuesday. The Olympics have arrived at an intriguing chapter in her career, and in Paris Biles will have the opportunity to complete an extraordinary arc of redemption. A senior member of the US team, Biles is a role model for young athletes both in and out of the gym. Sylvain Saudan, who was widely known as the “skier of the impossible” for his audacious and potentially life-ending descents down some of the steepest, most inaccessible slopes in the world, died on July 14 at his home in Les Houches, France. That Mr. Saudan lived into his ninth decade puzzled many people — including Mr. Saudan himself. Beginning in 1967, when he plunged down the Spencer Couloir on the Aiguille de Blaitière mountain in France — a 55-degree slope roughly equivalent, on skis, to a free fall — Mr. Saudan spent his life defying gravity, avalanches and obituary writers. “One mistake, you die,” Mr. Saudan once said. “You fall, you become a prisoner of the mountain — forever.”

At the end of another momentous term, the Supreme Court has issued major rulings that will reshape the law. For the most part, this criticism does not give the Supreme Court enough credit. In case after case, it has rightly emphasized the importance of turning to historical understandings in deciding constitutional cases rather than imposing modern policy views. Most of the court’s decisions are principled and sound — most but unfortunately not all. Still, for most of the term, the court based its decisions on historical understandings.

Even if you don’t know Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, you probably know its finale, the famous “Ode to Joy.”Written 200 years ago, the “Ode” is crafted like the best of pop songs, with easily hummable, simple phrases that use the same techniques you hear in a Taylor Swift hit today. But the “Ode” is more than pop. It’s a supranational anthem that aspires to a world in which “all men become brothers,” as its lyrics say. Since its premiere, the “Ode” has become shorthand for unity and hope, whether sincere or ironic. Sunny lyrics like “Be embraced, oh you millions!” and “Here’s a kiss for the entire world” have made it a fixture of the Olympics.
