New York CNN —Denny’s is closing 150 restaurants over the next year, and the 71-year-old diner chain is mulling a major change to its 24/7 operating hours. A specific list of closing restaurants weren’t immediately announced. Denny’s is targeting “underperforming restaurants” that are weighing down the company’s financial performance, according to Steve Dunn, Denny’s executive vice president and chief global development officer. Since the pandemic, about a quarter of its restaurants have not returned to those around-the-clock hours, so Denny’s is easing up on the requirement for a franchise to do so. Smith, 61, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was the romantic partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries. Abercrombie & Fitch said it was “appalled” by the allegations and launched an independent investigation into the matter. Jeffries served as CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch from 1992 until 2014, when the company announced his retirement. New York CNN —Target is slashing prices on more than 2,000 items, marking the second time this year that the retailer cut customer costs as it attempts to attract inflation-weary shoppers ahead of the holiday shopping season. Some prices have dropped effective immediately on a number of items, including home goods, beauty products, food, beverages and toys. In a press release, Target said it “routinely adjusts its prices to remain competitive in markets across the country” and the discounting will continue through December. In May, Target announced it was going to slash prices on 5,000 items but ended up surpassing that number, cutting prices on 8,000 products. New York CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has launched an investigation into the safety of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature, or FSD, after at least one fatal accident involving a pedestrian. The investigation is looking into four accidents involving vehicles using the FSD feature. FSD is at the center of Tesla’s plans for future growth and profitability. This is not the first time that the NHTSA has announced it is investigating Tesla’s self-driving features. In February 2023 the agency ordered a recall to change the FSD software on all of the more than 360,000 Teslas then on US roads with the feature.

New York CNN —The economic successes of Asheville, North Carolina and Tampa, Florida, have been the envy of many cities across the United States. Will the economies in hard-hit areas like Asheville and Tampa ever fully recover from the hurricanes? Economic activity plunged in the immediate months following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Hurricane Harvey in Houston and Hurricane Irma in Columbia, South Carolina. But within one year after those hurricanes, among the costliest in the US in the last 20 years, economic activity rebounded to levels similar to or greater than before the hurricanes. New York CNN —“To keep it simple for the State of Florida: it’s the First Amendment, stupid.”That’s what a federal judge wrote Thursday as he sided with local TV stations in an extraordinary dispute over a pro-abortion rights television ad. “Florida has now banned abortions, even in cases like mine.”The state health department – part of Gov. John Wilson, the health department’s general counsel, sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple television stations airing the ad. The health department’s threats were so chilling that WINK, a CBS affiliate, pulled the ad from its broadcasts, Florida Politics reported. Other stations have continued to air the ad, some as recently as Thursday evening, according to the TVEyes video search service.
