JetBlue Airways shares jumped 20% on Tuesday after the airline posted a surprise profit and said it would defer another $3 billion in aircraft spending through 2029 to improve cash flow. The airline posted a $25 million profit for the second quarter, down nearly 82% from last year. JetBlue hasn't posted an annual profit since before the pandemic. It also is trying to better deploy its aircraft outfitted with premium seats like its Mint aircraft to maximize revenue. JetBlue says the changes will help it add $800 million to $900 million in pretax profit from 2025 through 2027.

Anxiety may increase risk of dementia, study finds
  + stars: | 2024-07-29 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
ingwervanille/Moment RF/Getty ImagesMore than 55 million people worldwide have dementia, a number expected to increase to 139 million by 2050. Previous studies exploring the relationship between anxiety and dementia have largely measured participants’ anxiety at one point in time, providing mixed conclusions — but how long someone’s anxiety lasts is an important aspect worth considering, the authors argued. Researchers measured participants’ anxiety at the first and second assessments. Someone’s anxiety was considered resolved if they had anxiety only at the time of the first wave. “This study agrees with earlier studies that therapy aimed at alleviating anxiety can help reduce risk for (Alzheimer’s disease).

CNN —Two shots a year of a drug currently used to treat HIV infections were dramatically effective at preventing infections in a study among young women and adolescent girls in Africa. The twice-yearly injection of the drug lenacapavir can provide total protection against HIV infections, demonstrating 100% efficacy in Phase 3 trial data released by drugmaker Gilead and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The twice-a-year injections of lenacapavir could add another option at preventing HIV infections to the toolbox. The latest Phase 3 findings are part of Gilead’s PURPOSE program, which comprises five HIV prevention trials around the world. “While Gilead awaits additional phase 3 clinical trial data and the potential regulatory filings for HIV prevention administered twice-yearly, it is too early to state the price of lenacapavir for PrEP (prevention).

A humpback whale that an expert said was looking for food breached the water and landed on a recreational boat near Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday, capsizing the vessel and ejecting two passengers, the United States Coast Guard said. The Northern New England sector of the Coast Guard received a mayday call for a 23-foot boat that had capsized when a whale shot up from underneath the boat and flopped onto it, about half a mile east of Odiorne Point State Park. The dramatic flip was caught on video by Colin Yager, 16, who was out fishing on another boat nearby, according to WHDH in Boston. The whale also appeared to be uninjured, the Coast Guard said. “It’s was a harrowing experience,” Gregg Paquette, one of the two passengers knocked over by the whale, told WHDH.

It sounds simple enough — rent comes in and, ideally, it's greater than the rental expenses, resulting in positive cash flow — but real estate investors agree that rental income shouldn't be categorized as passive. A large new study provides some of the strongest evidence yet that vaccines reduce the risk of developing long Covid. Scientists looked at people in the United States infected during the first two years of the pandemic and found that the percentage of vaccinated people who developed long Covid was much lower than the percentage of unvaccinated people who did. Medical experts have previously said that vaccines can lower the risk of long Covid, largely because they help prevent severe illness during the infection period and people with severe infections are more likely to have long-term symptoms. But many individuals with mild infections also develop long Covid, and the study, published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that vaccination did not eliminate all risk of developing the condition, which continues to affect millions in the United States.
