Nov 1 (Reuters) - After months of tears and tantrums, bitcoin wants to split up with stock markets. The cryptocurrency, which has been closely correlated with tech stocks for much of its torrid 2022, is staging one of its strongest efforts yet to break away. For some crypto backers, any bitcoin break-up from Big Tech is a sign of strength. Bitcoin and crypto is one of those 'next' growth industries," said Santiago Portela, CEO of FITCHIN, a Web3 gaming ecosystem. Yet it's anyone's guess whether fickle bitcoin will begin to rally, or slide anew, or if it will swiftly rebound to the embrace of technology stocks.
It's another consequence of the quasi-legality of the cannabis industry in the US. The Canadian cannabis giant Canopy Growth has long searched for a way to give its stock a much-needed boost. "We continue to have open conversations with the exchanges," Klein said. He added that Canopy's deal could provide a model for other Canadian cannabis companies that want to do business in the US. Jefferies said Nasdaq's objection to Canopy's plan was a key risk and that the rest of the cannabis industry should pay close attention.

The stock exchange operator's actions come amid a surge in the shares of Chinese companies that raise small amounts, typically $50 million or less, in their IPO. Nasdaq started asking the advisers of small Chinese IPO candidates questions in mid-September. Seven sources who work on IPOs of small Chinese companies spoke to Reuters on the condition that neither they nor their clients be identified. LOOPHOLESNasdaq's intervention underscores how liquidity standards it adopted in the last three years to prevent stock manipulation in small IPOs have loopholes that Chinese companies are exploiting. There have been 57 listings of small Chinese companies in the last five years, up from 17 listings in the prior five years, according to Dealogic.
While bitcoin's price is stuck lately, there is one good thing to come from it for investors betting on crypto to become a legitimate asset class: It's less of a wild ride. After hovering in the $19,000 level for more than a month, bitcoin's volatility is now lower than that of both the Nasdaq and S&P 500, according to Kaiko. (Though bitcoin's correlation with stocks has eased, it remains high and its price continues to be driven by macro themes.) "Bitcoin volatility is at multi-year lows while equity volatility is only at its lowest level since July," Clara Medalie, head of research at Kaiko, told CNBC. The data suggests that cryptocurrency markets are less reactive to volatile macro events than they were earlier on in the year, whereas equity markets have remained highly sensitive."

Investors may be fleeing the sector in droves, but Barton Crockett, senior research analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, said the sell-off is an opportunity for long-term investors to buy the dip. One such "winner" that Crockett likes is Alphabet , which he described as a "good story" that will be "here today and tomorrow." Fed Chair Jerome Powell should stress the central bank's hawkish stance against inflation, Mike Novogratz said. "[Powell] threw us all off track a little bit two meetings ago when he said, 'I'm going to raise rates and then pause and watch.' "I think [Powell's] going to go, 'I'm going to raise rates. I'm going to stay vigilant and I'm going to raise rates until I see inflation start to crack," Novogratz said. Novogratz expects the Fed on Wednesday to raise the Fed funds rate by 75 basis points, a view largely held by investors.
