Life Is So Expensive, People Are Nostalgic for 2021

People used to talk wistfully about how movie tickets were $3 in the 1980s, or how a Big Mac cost a couple of bucks in the 1990s. Now they are nostalgic for the prices of just a few years ago. Russell Max Simon watched inflation play out in the cost of the avocados he likes to put on top of his breakfast. A 41-year-old marketing consultant in Rumney, N.H., Mr. Simon was dismayed to see their price climb from $1 each in early 2021 to $2.50 one year later.

BEDFORD, N.H.—Gov. Chris Sununu says abortion should remain legal in New Hampshire well into the second trimester of pregnancy. He opposed Republican legislation that could have forced schools to reveal a student’s sexual orientation to parents. He killed a GOP plan to redraw a House district boundary in the party’s favor. It is an unusual record for a Republican, particularly one now testing whether he can win the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination.

Biden's signature legislative achievement, the Inflation Reduction Act, has capped insulin prices for Medicare recipients at $35 per month but the law does not shield younger diabetes patients with private insurance or without insurance from higher prices. Let's cap the cost of insulin for everybody at $35," Biden told Congress Tuesday night. As the president spoke, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., called on Congress to pass the Insulin Act which would expand the $35 price cap to people with private insurance. Even when Democrats controlled both chambers last summer, Senate Republicans managed to kill a measure that would have capped insulin prices at $35 a month for people with private insurance. Should the Senate pass the Insulin Act, it would still face a House that's now in GOP hands.
Former President Donald Trump has largely been out of public view since launching his presidential campaign more than two months ago. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Donald Trump will embark Saturday on his first campaign trip of the 2024 presidential race, visiting two early primary voting states as he seeks to brush back calls from some GOP insiders and voters for a new party leader. In Salem, N.H., the former president is scheduled to speak to hundreds of Republicans attending the state party’s annual meeting. In the afternoon, he will appear with supporters in Columbia, S.C., a state that is home to a pair of possible rivals for the nomination.

How to Help Older Skiers Stay on the Slopes

In February 2020, just before the pandemic began, I went skiing with my father, who was 76. This past March, my father and I returned to the trails together for the first time since then. We spent four days skiing at Snowmass in Aspen, Colo.—and from the first run, his skiing appeared different. Now 78, he seemed tentative and uncomfortable on terrain that the resort hadn’t groomed for smooth skiing. Long top-to-bottom runs—one reason East Coasters like us travel to ski out West—taxed his stamina.
“How dare he?” Laurie Jasper, a member of the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women, said. Salting the wound was the revelation that South Carolina hadn’t even asked to be first, and officials there contend they were as surprised as anyone to be handed the spot. In South Carolina, the majority of Democratic primary voters are African American. “North Carolina is more diverse than South Carolina. Democrats say they aren’t about to retreat behind South Carolina and anyway, they can’t.
The 26% of Georgians who ranked abortion as their top issue backed Warnock by a margin of 77% to 21%, NBC News exit polls showed. Herschel Walker wants a total ban on abortion nationwide,” says a TV ad by the Democratic group Georgia Honor, playing footage of Walker calling for a “no-exception” ban. NBC News exit polls showed 60% of voters believe abortion should be legal, while 37% said it should be illegal. And no-exceptions rhetoric could be out of step with voters in a divided state like Georgia. Sen. Gary Peters, the Michigan Democrat who chairs the party’s Senate campaign arm, said abortion will remain a “permanent” feature of American elections until Republicans back down.

WASHINGTON — New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan won re-election Tuesday, NBC News projects, defeating Republican Don Bolduc and keeping a critical seat in Democratic hands. While the race attracted less attention than some others, Hassan won her Senate seat six years ago in one of the closest races in the country, and Democrats had grown increasingly nervous in recent weeks as Bolduc seemed to gain strength in polls. After winning the nomination, however, he waffled on 2020, saying the election had not been stolen. Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan at a campaign event on Sept. 10 in Dover, N.H. CONCORD, N.H. — The father of Harmony Montgomery, a New Hampshire girl who disappeared in 2019 at age 5 but was not reported missing until late last year, has been arrested on a charge of second-degree murder, authorities said Monday. Other counts against Adam Montgomery, 32, include falsifying physical evidence and abuse of a corpse between December 2019 and March 2020. An attorney for Adam Montgomery did not immediately comment. Police said they contacted Adam Montgomery, who had custody of Harmony, and other family members by the end of December. Bail for Kayla Montgomery was recently revoked after she didn’t show up at a hearing on charges against her, including that she lied to state health officials about having Harmony Montgomery in her care.

Wildfire Smoke Is Erasing Progress on Clean Air

WASHINGTON — Sen. Lindsey Graham's national 15-week abortion ban would likely force many women to undergo invasive transvaginal ultrasounds before terminating pregnancies, according to doctors. Because violations of Graham's proposed 15-week ban would be punishable by up to five years in prison, doctors say the legislation would create a powerful incentive to perform transvaginal ultrasounds to make an age judgment. With Democrats in control of the House, Senate and White House, Graham’s bill stands no chance of advancing this year. Before he introduced his bill, Graham's effort was expected by some in the GOP to help Republicans reset the politics of abortion. For others, the details of Graham's ban are politically tricky, especially in states that have passed different abortion restrictions in recent years.
Researchers focused on 10 categories related to voting, including registration, inconvenience, early voting, polling hours and absentee voting. The state also stopped using special voting deputies, officials whose tasks had sometimes included conducting voter registration drives, according to the study. To assess the voting laws passed after the 2020 election, this year’s Cost of Voting Index study added new categories and scoring. While the political debate surrounding new election laws has centered on ballots and the voting process, the Cost of Voting Index also gives heavy weight to the ease of voter registration. States rank higher in the index if they allow voter registration drives, provide automatic voter registration, offer same-day registration and maintain longer periods in which to register.
