The European Union requires a warning label on products that contain three artificial food dyes approved in the U.S.:Yellow No. “All the colors listed have recently undergone assessments for safety in food by the JECFA and were found to be safe for use in food under current use conditions.”States already banning the artificial food dyesStates are already putting pressure on manufacturers to remove artificial dyes from food and beverages. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and his senior aides are discussing the idea of issuing preemptive pardons for those whom President-elect Donald Trump has scorned in recent years as he has hinted about plans for retribution, two sources familiar with the discussions confirmed. Some Democrats and “Never Trump” Republicans have supported the notion of preemptive pardons to protect people under a new Trump presidency. Previous presidents have issued such pardons, including George H.W. Back in the Biden White House, there is work being done on the president’s use of clemency authority on criminal justice cases. Advocates, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are encouraging the president to act on a variety of cases they say are worthy of clemency.

Nearly 100 former national security officials signed a letter criticizing President-elect Donald Trump's decision to nominate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and called for closed-door Senate hearings to review any government information about her. In the letter obtained by NBC News, the officials urged the Senate to "carefully evaluate" whether Gabbard is "equipped" for the position, which requires Senate confirmation. "Following her trip to Syria, for example, Ms. Gabbard aligned herself with Russian and Syrian officials." The former officials also proposed closed-door hearings that would allow lawmakers to fully review any government files on Gabbard, a former Democratic House member from Hawaii. Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team slammed the letter, as well as the signers' credentials.

A third Democratic lawmaker reported being told this week by Ocasio-Cortez, 35, that she was definitely running. The contest will serve as a gauge of whether the Democratic caucus still values seniority or truly wants generational change. “AOC is very collaborative on the committee and helps lift up all members,” Khanna said in a brief interview. The Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which is closely aligned with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is planning to make recommendations for committee leaders later this month. After that, all 215 House Democrats who will serve in the new Congress will vote on who they want as their committee leaders for the 119th Congress.

For everyday consumers, the simplest way to send encrypted messages or make encrypted calls is to use communications apps like Signal or WhatsApp that have implemented end-to-end encryption between other Signal and WhatsApp users. Both apps also allow users to make encrypted phone calls with other users through the internet. If iMessage users text other iMessage users or Google Messages users text other Google Messages users, those chats are automatically encrypted with the Signal protocol. For phone calls, Google and Apple offer encryption if the calls are made through their internet-connected calling apps — Google Fi and FaceTime. In some circumstances, affecting members of both the Trump and Harris campaigns, as well as the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., they were able to listen to phone calls.

A Chinese hacking campaign that has spied on the texts and calls of U.S. citizens by hacking telecommunications companies is significantly larger than previously known to the public, a top White House official said Wednesday. At least eight American telecommunications companies have been compromised, Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology at the National Security Council, said in a press call Wednesday. On Tuesday, agencies in the U.S., as well as in key allies Australia, Canada and New Zealand, released a public guide for telecommunications companies to protect themselves from China’s hackers. On a press call Tuesday about Salt Typhoon, an FBI official said the hackers were primarily interested in the call records of people in the Washington, D.C., area. The agency does not plan to notify all the Americans whose call records were accessed, however, the FBI official said.

The judge who presided over the California tax fraud case against Hunter Biden called out the president for mischaracterizing and minimizing the charges against his son in announcing why he was pardoning him. Biden had pleaded guilty to all of the allegations against him in the California case on the eve of trial in September. The taxes were eventually paid after federal investigators told Biden they were looking into his finances in December 2020. "But two federal judges expressly rejected Mr. Biden’s arguments that the Government prosecuted Mr. Biden because of his familial relation to the President. Amid an unprecedented cyberattack on telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon, U.S. officials have recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps to ensure their communications stay hidden from foreign hackers. CALEA systems can include classified court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which processes some U.S. intelligence court orders. The FBI official declined to say if any classified material was accessed. But the FBI has also supported forms of encryption that do allow for some law enforcement access in certain circumstances. Certainly the way they went about it was very, very specific about the telcos and the ISPs, but it fits into the cyber espionage bucket,” the FBI official said.

Thirman Milner, who in 1981 became the first popularly elected Black mayor in New England, in Hartford, Conn., and went on to serve three terms, died on Nov. 29 at his home there. His death was confirmed by his stepdaughter Virginia Monteiro, the first vice chairwoman of the Connecticut and the Greater Hartford branches of the N.A.A.C.P. He traveled to the South to protest against racial segregation, then returned to Hartford, the state’s capital and one of the nation’s poorest cities at the time. There, he said, he discovered that discrimination against Black people was even worse. He grudgingly agreed to enter politics, serving two terms in the State Legislature before challenging Mayor George A. Athanson, Hartford’s flamboyant incumbent, who had served since 1971 and was seeking a sixth term.
