But in the last few years, increasing pay transparency has become a common cause for young workers, anti-discrimination advocates, and, increasingly, state legislators. But employers in states with transparency laws make up for it by imposing informal rules that prevent employees from talking about pay. If the "new norm" of salary transparency had supplanted the old taboo, then we'd expect a large majority to chafe under outdated restrictions against discussing pay. Strong support for managers in general appears to translate into strong support for managerial approaches to pay secrecy or transparency. If salary transparency is actually going to become the "new norm," it will clearly require more than our existing set of state laws.
The TV series, an action-comedy-drama combination, is based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang and premieres on Disney+ streaming service on Wednesday. He changed his mind, however, after being reassured by show producer Melvin Mar and series creator, Kevin Yu, and seeing the dedication of the Asian-led cast. The TV series follows high school student Jin Wang, played by Ben Wang, who struggles with his identity as he navigates both school and home life. “American Born Chinese” draws from Chinese folklore and Chinese and Japanese animation that is based on the 6th century Chinese novel “Journey to the West.”Beyond the kung fu action story, the show focuses on the challenges of Jin understanding his Chinese and American identities, while also going through the tribulations of being a teenager. In the film "Killers of the Flower Moon", which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, a member of the Osage Nation whose family members die under suspicious conditions in 1920s Oklahoma. Because of his global reputation, Scorsese was uniquely placed to dispel the myths that have prevailed, she said. Referring to deceptions that have prevailed, Gladstone asked: "Why the hell does the world not know about these things? In the film, Gladstone marries her white driver Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), whose uncle is the "King of the Osage Hills" William Hale (Robert De Niro).

CNN —An enormous wooden horse presides over the marina in Çanakkale, a small port city southwest of Istanbul. The clapboard animal is a mock-up of the Trojan Horse of mythological fame. Çanakkale (pronounced cha-na-call-ay) stands adjacent to the archaeological site that was once the ancient city of Troy, best known as the setting of the Trojan War in Homer’s “Iliad.”A giant wooden horse watches over Çanakkale. Today when you visit Truva – either via car or a short bus ride from Çanakkale – a second model of the Trojan Horse looms at the entrance. “We know that there were many wars that occurred at Troy,” Rose explains.
OUR MIGRANT SOULS: A Meditation on Race and the Meanings and Myths of “Latino,” by Héctor Tobar“Our Migrant Souls,” the new book by Héctor Tobar, begins with a direct address to the many Latinx students he has taught during his years as a professor at U.C. His tone is gentle and tender as he recounts the stories they’ve shared with him in essays and office visits — stories of migration and homecoming, trauma and resilience, doubts and joys. “You are a deep brown and you are fair-skinned,” he writes. “Your eyes are black and they are green, and you are 19, and 20 and 21.” Tobar describes a multitude of young people navigating complex ancestral histories and shifting notions of identity. “I will weave what I know with what you have taught me,” he promises them, “and together we will arrive at an understanding of our times, and our ‘people.’”Tobar, who has spent several decades reporting on immigration, culture and Latin America, is well equipped for such a task.
The dollar's dominance isn't at risk, three currency experts told Insider. Vocal observers, like Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have warned that the threat of de-dollarization is real, as countries like China take measures to supplant the dollar. They debunked five myths and misconceptions that are commonly touted by dollar doomsayers:1. The dollar is losing its stance as the top currency in global tradeThis claim also isn't supported by data. Though the percentage of dollar reserves has slipped, he estimates it would take around 24 years for global dollar reserves to drop another 12%.
Starting in the 1980s, he crossed paths with leading investors, including Paul Tudor Jones. Dever says Jones delivered huge returns for Dever's clients, and explains what he learned from Jones. He also invested for several years in the 1980s with Paul Tudor Jones, now a billionaire hedge fund manager. This disparity can lead to uncomfortable situations like not wanting to talk about money or even "financial infidelity" — couples hiding their purchases from each other. But financial psychologist Bradley Klontz, a member of CNBC's Financial Advisor Council, said talking about money in a relationship can serve as an opportunity for growth. "Sometimes we don't enjoy that experience, but it tends to be good for us when it comes to our relationship with money." That anxiety surrounding money, Klontz said, is also often inherited. Not talking these things through leaves people feeling alone in their financial struggles, even though 7 in 10 Americans report feeling stressed about money, according to a new CNBC Your Money Financial Confidence Survey conducted in partnership with Momentive.
Mike Dever is the founder and CEO of Brandywine Asset Management and author of "Jackass Investing." Over the course of four decades in investing, Michael Dever has learned that the bedrock of most people's beliefs about the stock market are faulty. Investing in stocks and bonds is adequate portfolio diversification? Dever says investors cost themselves a lot of money every year by falling for phony conventional wisdom, and that there's a better way to invest. Investors also accept limits on how much profit they'll make, but an investor who's concerned about a market downturn might see that as a worthwhile trade.
To many women, Mr. Trump has come to represent male sexual entitlement. When she heard the tape, Ms. Ross told me, “I didn’t just hear Donald Trump. Her depiction of Mr. Trump may also be bolstered by the “Access Hollywood” tape, which the judge has allowed as evidence along with the testimony of two women who have accused Mr. Trump of nonconsensual sex acts, allegations that Mr. Trump has denied. Like most accusers, Ms. Carroll will need to overcome formidable barriers to belief. Since Mr. Trump is anticipated not to testify at trial, his case is likely to hinge on attacking Ms. Carroll’s own account.
Everybody Knows What Fox News Is Now

As the days went on, Fox was placed in the nightmare situation of having to pierce the bubble and report the news: That Mr. Biden had been legally elected. Fox leaders watched the gains of conservative rivals like Newsmax and saw the audience’s interest in election-theft fantasies building. All this, trial or no trial, makes clear what Fox News really is. Seen this way, the Dominion case wasn’t so much about Fox telling its audience what to believe. It was about the audience telling Fox what Fox needed to believe — or at least, what it needed to give the appearance of not not believing.

"Home fitness has proved to be one of the most effective ways to really get people amazing results," she notes.
From the beginning, said Goyanes — an official Alienware brand historian — "our founders were gamers" who "took insights from gamers very, very seriously." Yet when Goyanes began working for Alienware, social media was in its infancy. But mostly, he stresses, gamers today are a diverse community. "What you can do with lighting, I think it's certainly the best thing we've ever released on a gaming laptop in our entire history," Goyanes said. The Crimean War would become another example of the county's war drinking problem cataloged in the annals of Russian history. I don't think it's nearly as important nowadays, as it was during the Russo-Japanese War or World War One, but it's significant, right?" In an interview with Insider, Schrad expanded on the history of Russian drinking during wartime. A lot of it is the consequence of my research topic, which has been alcohol and Russian history. The Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, in particular, were all drunken fiascos.

In author Nicole Chung's new memoir, "A Living Remedy," she tells the story of watching both her parents die in the span of two years. Chung blames the country's broken health-care system, at least in part, for the fact that her father died at 67, and her mother at 68. I spoke with Chung about her grief and the state of American health care. He knew he was getting sicker, but my parents just didn't have a way to pay for the extensive care he needed. NC: After my father died, I spent months trying to figure out why I was so enraged.

Located just three miles from The Masters venue, the historically Black district lay adjacent to Augusta Country Club. Eventually, many would hop across Rae’s Creek to begin work at Augusta National. A “good bag” at Augusta National would pay up to $5, Maben said, offering $20 for a particularly lucrative day’s labor. The 1983 Masters saw the first White caddies walk the greens at the major, with just 19 Black caddies on the bag, Clayton said. This year, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum will put the legacy of Augusta’s Black caddies – quite literally – center stage.

The job market continued a gradual cooling in February but largely remains advantageous for workers, according to labor data issued Tuesday. There were about 1.7 job openings per unemployed worker, the lowest ratio since November 2021. Prior to 2021, job openings had never before reached 8 million. "The job market is cooling," said Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor, a career site. Indeed, by any measure, the job market is hotter than it was in 2019 — which itself was known as a job seeker's market characterized by factors such as low unemployment and strong wage growth, Zhao said.
These days, most Americans are stressed about money. And yet, when it comes to budgeting, saving and managing debt, many get some simple fundamentals wrong. Not only can carrying a balance lower your credit score, but sky-high annual percentage rates also make credit cards one of the most expensive ways to borrow money. More often, Americans are unsure, especially when pervasive money myths get in the way of good credit habits. While there is an important role for schools to play, a financial education should begin at home.
CNBC polled eight personal finance experts to help answer one question: What are the biggest money myths out there for consumers? Dealers therefore can have an incentive to charge a higher rate because they will also make more money, she said. Myth #3: Financial 'advice' always has your best interests at heartThere's a misconception that every financial advisor is a "fiduciary," said George Kinder, who pioneered the "life planning" branch of financial advice. "Although households and regulators remain concerned about the cost of financial advice, it's the absence of holistic financial advice that turns out to be so expensive," he said. There are many different fee models for financial advice, and the cost doesn't have to be significant: Many advisors have hourly or project rates, for example.
