10-year Treasury yields are surging as the economy stays hot. For the first time since 2007, 10-year yields rose above 4.3% on Thursday after seeing a 31% surge since April. If or when that eventually happens, Treasury yields are likely to follow, presenting those who hold the assets with an opportunity. Bond yields fall when demand for the assets rise, pushing up their price. David Kelly, the chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, sees 10-year rates averaging 3.7% in the years ahead.

Now, the inverse has happened as stocks rally, inflation steadily falls, and the labor market stays healthy. By any historical measure, this is still a really strong labor market," he said. "There's a lot of market concern — understandably so — about the sustainability of the strong labor market," Porter said. "There are clear signs that we're weakening at the margin," Schurmeier said of the labor market. "And they're able to thread the needle on the other part of their mandate, which is the labor market."

Hiccup in soft landing story Why are we hitting this string of down days? There's a hiccup in the soft landing story. That's causing a speed bump for stocks, particularly tech stocks, which are underperforming this month and this quarter. And despite poor economic news out of China, the macroeconomic environment in the U.S. remains strong and still supportive of a soft landing. At 19.2 times forward earnings, the S & P 500 is still richly valued.

2023's blistering stock rally is under threat, according to a top JPMorgan Asset Management strategist. The impact of banking chaos could soon start to weigh on stocks, David Lebovitz said. Ahead of Thursday's inflation report, Lebovitz also commented on company margins and whether sticky costs will weigh on firms' pricing power. "When we look at the consumer, the consumer looks fine today, but the consumer is beginning to bend. That's going to undermine the pricing power that's allowed a lot of these companies to keep their heads above water," he added.

.SPX 1M mountain S & P 500 1-month Since then, it's been one excuse after another. Everything Tuesday was down about 1.0-1.25% midday, including the equal-weight S & P 500 (RSP) the market-cap weighted S & P 500, the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), and the small-cap Russell 2000, but most ended down a fraction of a percent. At nearly 5% yield, money market funds are still sucking in money, even with the S & P 500 up 18% this year. I mentioned Monday that money market inflows reaccelerated last week: $21 billion worth of inflows were added, according to Goldman Sachs. "The pace of money market flows reflects a larger apathy towards stock," Todd Sohn from Strategas told clients.
