"Four hundred Canadians are trapped in Gaza, they are living in fear and despair... And that is why we need humanitarian pauses, a humanitarian truce, in Gaza," Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in the text of a speech to the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto. Israel's widening ground attacks on Gaza have spurred international calls for a "humanitarian pause" to allow aid in. In a wide-ranging policy speech, Joly also addressed tensions with India after Canada said Indian agents were linked to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader - and Canadian citizen - in British Columbia.

The Al Shifa hospital was lit up in Gaza City on Tuesday. But to the Israeli military, it is a threat, and, perhaps, a target. Among Al Shifa’s current patients are about 130 newborns who were orphaned just as they were born, according to doctors at Al Shifa. Born premature, they were placed in incubators in Al Shifa’s neonatal intensive care unit. CNN —Israeli ground forces are inside Gaza having entered the enclave overnight, as Palestinians experienced what they have described as the most intense round of airstrikes since Israel began its retaliation against Hamas’ October 7 terror attack. Israeli forces “went into the Gaza Strip and expanded the ground operation where infantry, armour and engineer units and artillery with heavy fire are taking part,” Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari said Saturday morning during a press briefing in Tel Aviv. “The forces are in the field and continue the fighting,” he added, without giving further details. Both those raids saw ground forces withdraw after a few hours. Israeli air strikes destroyed hundreds of buildings in the Gaza Strip overnight, the civil defence service in the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory said on Saturday.

Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan on Wednesday discussed his country's efforts to de-escalate what he called "recent events" in the Middle East region, without naming any of the parties involved. "So we need calm, we need wisdom, we need to collaborate, to bring calm and make sure that we de-escalate." The United Nations and numerous countries have called for a cease-fire, so far to no avail. "We have seen this in the region where before the 7th of October a lot of de-escalation had happened, which brought a lot of hope for the region, and we don't want the recent events to derail that," the minister said. "So we are making a lot of efforts with our partners to ensure that we go back to where we are and continue the development path."

Most of Gaza’s water comes from local sources – but the fuel required to pump and clean it is fast running out. As the water system collapses, some Gazans have been forced to drink dirty, salty water, sparking concerns of a health crisis and fears that people could start dying from dehydration. Without it, Gaza’s water system has crumbled. Gaza’s fuel supplies could be exhausted in as little as 48 to 72 hours, Ghunaim, from the PWA, said on Monday. Even before the conflict, many experts were saying the water situation would be “catastrophic in the future,” Hall said.

Qatar Airways announced that its CEO, Akbar Al Baker, is standing down after 27 years. Al Baker's leadership has seen the airline win an array of awards, including the World's Best Airline seven times. Since Al Baker took charge nearly three decades ago, Qatar's national carrier has grown hugely and picked up several awards along the way. NEW YORK (AP) — Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker is stepping down after 27 years leading the company. Al Baker's retirement will go into effect Nov. 5, Qatar Airways said Monday. In Monday's announcement, Qatar Airways said that it “has grown to become one of the most recognisable and trusted brands globally” under Al Baker's leadership. During his tenure at Qatar Airways, Al Baker became known for being one of the most outspoken leaders in the airline industry — with a hard-changing, sometimes confrontational approach that carried into negotiations with manufacturers and others. Qatar Airway's earned revenue of $20.9 billion over the fiscal year, up from $14.4 billion the year before.

Al Baker, who has led the airline since 1997, will step down on Nov. 5. The move was unexpected, and no reason was given by Qatar Airways for his departure. Known as one of the industry’s most outspoken and influential executives, Al Baker is widely credited with transforming Qatar Airways into one of the world’s top airlines. In 2018, Al Baker apologized for making sexist comments at an International Air Transport Association meeting.
