Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., speaks during a House Oversight and Accountability Committee impeachment inquiry hearing on Sept. 28, 2023. Jonathan Ernst | ReutersHouse Republicans are pressing the IRS for answers after the agency paused processing new claims for a pandemic-era small business tax break. Lawmakers voiced "continued concerns" about the employee retention credit, or ERC, which was enacted to support small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic. The backlog of unprocessed ERC claimsAs of Sept. 27, the total inventory of unprocessed Forms 941-X, used to amend an employer's quarterly federal tax returns, was roughly 779,000, according to the IRS. However, the ERC claim backlog may be significantly higher due to professional employer organizations, or PEOs, which provide payroll benefits and other HR services.

If the shutdown isn’t averted, Head Start programs serving more than 10,000 children would immediately lose federal funding, including Ferguson's program. That's what worries Lori Milam, executive director of the West Virginia Head Start. This is a particular concern with nearly 20% of Head Start staff positions vacant nationwide, according to the National Head Start Association. Another pot of COVID-19 relief funds that helped Head Start ran out in the spring. Laketia Washington, a mother of eight whose 3- and 5-year-olds attend Head Start programs in Tallahassee, Florida, lamented the turmoil as she rang up customers at a discount store.

That is especially concerning for parents of younger kids and those whose disabilities can make finding child care an extra challenge. One failed legislative proposal would have let students in four-day districts transfer or attend private schools, with their home districts picking up the tab. “If everybody becomes a four-day school week,” she said, “that is no longer a recruitment strategy.”In some communities, a four-day week is better for families. “They’re making the shift to the four-day week because all the districts around them have adopted a four-day week,” he said. However, the Rand Corporation found achievement differences in four-day districts, while initially hard to spot, became apparent over multiple years.

The video posted on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, caught the attention of Jonathan Riley, a liberal activist in Durham, North Carolina, who posted Sunday that it showed “Missouri Republicans at a literal book burning," though he'd later walk that statement back to a “metaphorical” book burning. “It fit a narrative that they wanted to put out there,” Freedom Fest organizer Debbie McFarland said about claims that Eigel burned books. Experts who study political extremism said images involving fire or bonfires have long been associated with extremist groups. Eigel’s critics quickly posted online images involving the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi book burnings before World War II. Talking about book burning enough can plant the idea in people's minds so that ”people think it’s actually a righteous thing to do."

(AP) — The Chiefs and reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes agreed to a restructure of his 10-year, $450 million contract that gives him a substantial boost in pay over the next four seasons, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the contract. That would represent a substantial increase over the salary on his latest deal, which ties him to the Chiefs through the 2031 season. Cabott also said that the two sides were planning to revisit the contract once the next four seasons are played out. (AP) — A Missouri judge has upheld the constitutionality of the state's Senate districts in a case that provided the first legal test of revised redistricting criteria approved by voters. Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem rejected claims that the Senate map unlawfully divided certain local governments into multiple Senate districts, but an attorney said Wednesday that his clients are considering an appeal. In Missouri, two separate bipartisan citizen commissions are supposed to redraw state House and Senate districts after each census to account for population changes. Hatfield said he doesn't believe the constitutional criteria make it OK to split a county into multiple districts when it could be kept whole. Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday announced that he has instructed three GOP-led committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. McCarthy apparently abandoned his previous vow that an impeachment inquiry would occur through a vote in the House. Senate Republicans are skeptical that the House has uncovered enough evidence to justify an impeachment inquiry. The Republican-led House Oversight committee launched an investigation in January into allegations that Biden profited from his son Hunter's business dealings while he was vice president. Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the oversight committee, called the GOP investigation "a complete and total bust" in a statement Monday.
