Oct 14 (Reuters) - Russian-backed forces have made tactical advances in the last three days towards the centre of Bakhmut, a strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region, and likely advanced into villages south of the town, Britain said on Friday. Bakhmut sits on a main road leading to the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Private military company Wagner Group "likely remains" heavily involved in the Bakhmut fighting, Britain's Ministry of Defence said in an intelligence bulletin. In Ukraine's Donbas region, the ministry said that Russia continued with offensive operations in central part of the state and was "very slowly" making progress. Sept 19 (Reuters) - The Wagner Group, a Russian private military company, is trying to recruit over 1,500 convicted felons to take part in Russia's war in Ukraine, but many are refusing to join, a senior U.S. defense official said on Monday. The European Union has imposed sanctions on the Wagner Group, accusing it of clandestine operations on the Kremlin’s behalf. The video appeared to show Prigozhin attempting to recruit Russian prisoners as well as Tajiks, Belarusians and Armenians. Wagner Group fighters have been accused by rights groups and the Ukrainian government of committing war crimes in Syria and eastern Ukraine from 2014 onward. In July, British military intelligence said that Russia has used Wagner to reinforce its frontline forces in the Ukraine conflict.

But many convicted felons are refusing, a senior US defense official told reporters on Monday. Wagner's efforts have been recently "reinvigorated" by Prigozhin's pitch asking the Russian prisoners to serve as "fighters for assault units," the ministry said. Wagner is a Russian private military company with close ties to the Kremlin that is now in Ukraine. In a video shared on Telegram, the group's founder can be seen recruiting at a Russian prison. Wagner's Yevgeny Prigozhin claims the men will receive pardons if they agree to fight in Ukraine. Prigozhin's offer to Russian prisoners — to fight in a conflict he bills as being far more difficult than the war Russia fought in Chechnya and Afghanistan — comes with other conditions beyond the threat of execution for deserters. In the video, Prigozhin says he's prepared to accept men between the ages of 22 and 50 but can accept younger recruits with the consent of their families.
