A documentary, a coffee-table book, an international tour and an opera partnership will be some of the many homages to the Martha Graham Dance Company as it celebrates its 100th anniversary, starting this fall. In 1926, the pioneering choreographer Martha Graham, just 31, founded her dance company and school, while living and working out of a studio apartment in Midtown Manhattan. The company, America’s oldest dance troupe, has survived for nearly a century — a milestone it will commemorate with a three-season celebration, the company announced on Wednesday. “The company has been part of the American conversation for 100 years — we needed at least three seasons to dive in,” said Janet Eilber, the artistic director. “We want audiences to have new points of access to the classics of modern dance, so they can recognize it as something relevant to themselves and to our current times.”The lineup, which begins in September, will be broken into three parts, each with themes to “accentuate the eras that the company has been through,” Eilber said.

Three years ago, the theater artist and writer was diagnosed with autism. “Before getting diagnosed and getting the correct help, I was unaware of the ways my environment was affecting me,” Mx. Kaufman, who, along with Shane Dittmar, the musical director for “Into the Woods,” started a nonbinary writing team called They & Them, as well as a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired fantasy musical podcast, “The Reality Shaper.”

When Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, decamped Britain for the United States in 2020, he portrayed it as an act of survival against a relentlessly intrusive British press. On Tuesday, after a chaotic encounter with photographers in New York City, Harry found the media glare can be just as intense in his adopted home. With details continuing to filter out about what exactly happened to Harry, Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, as photographers pursued them in Midtown Manhattan, the episode underscored a basic paradox in the lives of this celebrity couple: they plead for privacy, but also seek publicity, with a Netflix documentary, a tell-all memoir by Harry and public appearances that will inevitably draw cameras. The frenzy in New York is a reminder of the grievances that Harry has held for decades against the British press, which remains the primary market for paparazzi shots of him and Meghan. In 1997, his mother, Princess Diana, died in a car crash in Paris while fleeing photographers; Harry has blamed them for her death and expressed fears that history could repeat itself with his wife and family.
CNN has selected Kaitlan Collins to host a new weeknight show at 9 p.m., elevating her to one of the most coveted time slots in cable news a week after she moderated a contentious town hall with former President Donald J. Trump. The new role for Ms. Collins was announced by CNN’s chairman, Chris Licht, on Wednesday, just ahead of a presentation to advertisers in Midtown Manhattan hosted by Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company. Her show, which does not yet have a title, is set to begin in June. “She is a smart and gifted journalist who we’ve all seen hold lawmakers and newsmakers accountable,” Mr. Licht wrote in a newsroom memo.
WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) - New Jersey's two Democratic senators and the state's governor said on Monday they are seeking to halt a plan by New York City to adopt a congestion pricing plan in Manhattan, which would be the country's first. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker urged U.S. Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg not to grant final approval to environmental reviews needed to implement the congestion pricing plan after his department gave a key approval on May 5. Governor Phil Murphy said he would work "to halt implementation of this misguided tolling plan" and said the state is assessing legal options. Earlier this month, USDOT approved release of the final environmental assessment for New York's congestion pricing plan for public review. New York said drivers could face a traffic congestion charge of up to $23 a day.
Other companies, too, could see reverberations if they enact similar policies, especially if the mandates feel arbitrary, human resources professionals say. That's why companies that want to bring workers back to the office need to focus on reconfiguring workspaces to foster additional collaboration. If your company hasn't yet, maybe don't 'mandate'Many companies are still ironing out their return-to-office policies. JustAnswer, an online source for professional information, has seen a 49% increase in questions related to return-to-office mandates and/or policies in its Employment Law category compared with May 2022. Companies should also evaluate whether across-the-board policies make sense, or whether in-office mandates should be implemented for certain functions only, Kogut said.
A six-year-old male from Palm Springs, California, Buddy Holly became the first of his breed to win. "Buddy Holly is the epitome of the dog show." Each breed produces a winner, representing the best of what artificial selection can create from the descendants of wolves. Digital publishers and streamers including Roku presented new content, formats and technology at NewFronts. Photo: RokuArtificial intelligence, entertainment-industry turmoil and new ways of gauging the success of advertising loomed large at this week’s NewFronts media showcases for digital ad buyers. Presenters including Amazon, Roku and NBCUniversal’s Peacock hosted NewFronts events in New York City to show off new shows, ad formats and measurement capabilities. But this year’s NewFronts also offered a taste of what traditional TV programmers might face in two weeks at their annual upfront sales events, where major networks usually host star-laden stage shows for advertisers if the Writers Guild of America strike continues. WGA members on Tuesday picketed Peacock’s presentation in Midtown Manhattan, and actress Edie Falco chose to not introduce a new Peacock show during the event because of the strike, according to a person familiar with the situation.

May 5 (Reuters) - The Biden administration on Friday approved the release of the final environmental assessment for New York City's congestion pricing plan for public comment, a key step before the project can be green-lighted. In August, New York said drivers could face a traffic congestion charge of up to $23 a day in late 2023. New York, which has the most congested U.S. traffic, would become the first major U.S. city to follow London, which began a similar charge in 2003. New York lawmakers approved the plan in 2019, and it was originally projected to start in 2021. The environmental assessment found the charge would cut traffic, improve air quality, make buses more reliable and increase transit use by 1%-2%.

The union representing movie and television writers said Monday they are going on strike, after talks with major networks, streamers and studios ended without a deal. WSJ’s Joe Flint explains what’s at stake. Photo: J. David Ake/Associated PressDevin Delliquanti had jokes at the ready about the King of England’s fingers. But instead of working on those punchlines for a Tuesday-night edition of “The Daily Show,” the staff writer spent the afternoon on a picket line in Midtown Manhattan with colleagues, chanting slogans and hoisting signs with messages such as “Do the write thing!” and “Miss your show, let them know!”“We’re on strike, so I’m not allowed to tell you what [‘The Daily Show’] would have said about the coronation of a man with sausage fingers,” Mr. Delliquanti said. “I wish we were doing a normal Tuesday but we need a fair contract to get the show on the air.”
The law would likely take effect in 2026 for most new buildings under seven stories and in 2029 for larger buildings. The statewide ban would follow legislation passed by New York City in 2021 that bans natural gas hookups in new buildings by the end of this year. New York was the sixth-largest natural gas consumer among the states in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. And in 2021, the residential sector — where three out of every five households use natural gas for heating — comprised over one-third of the natural gas delivered to New York residents, the agency found. "New York state is leading the way in ending America's devastating addiction to fossil fuels," said Food & Water Watch Northeast Region Director Alex Beauchamp.
When Julia Lemberskiy moved to New York City in 2018, she wanted to buy property. Today, she owns three Airbnb properties that bring in up to $20,000 a month in revenue. Her overall investing strategy is to buy "undervalued properties" in "undervalued areas," which she finds by looking at approved development projects in the community. For starters, the purchase prices in New York City are astronomical. While buying property in New York City was off the table, buying property in general was not, especially once Lemberskiy decided to settle down in the States.
Devin Walsh spends up to 40 minutes commuting to work at least four days each week. I live in Midtown Manhattan and take the subway to our office, which is in the Financial District. Sometimes I go into the office all five days of the week if work is busier. Another added bonus of making the trip into the office is the face-time you get to have with senior leaders. If I work from home on a Friday, I typically fill it with meetings, one-on-ones, brainstorms, and general catch-ups.
Global Brand Ambassador Gal Gadot along with Anthony Ledru, President and Chief Executive officer of Tiffany & Co attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for reopening of the Tiffany flagship store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., April 26, 2023. Alexandre Arnault spearheaded the label's initial reset with an advertising campaign starring Beyonce -- wearing the famous yellow Tiffany diamond -- and Jay-Z. In the summer of 2013, I participated in a daylong series of talks at the Ford Foundation in Midtown Manhattan. The event, the Road Ahead for Civil Rights: Courting Change, was meant to mark the semicentennial of the civil rights movement. My panel was in the morning, but I stayed for the lunch session because Harry Belafonte was participating in it, along with the activist Dolores Huerta. I didn’t know the Belafonte my parents knew, the young, handsome calypso singer. But there were no notes that I could see; we were witnessing the brilliance of Belafonte in real time.

REUTERS/Mike Segar/File PhotoApril 26 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever. An unholy trinity of U.S. developments on Tuesday - poor corporate earnings, a bank's value going up in smoke and slumping consumer confidence - will likely set an extremely gloomy tone for Asian markets on Wednesday. The wider U.S. regional banking index's 4% slide - its fourth straight decline - took its year-to-date decline to 25%. If there is a tailwind for Asian markets on Wednesday amid the headwinds it will be the after-hours results from Google's parent company Alphabet GOOGL.O and Microsoft .MSFT.O.
In the summer of 2011, Rupert Murdoch stopped by my small office at The Wall Street Journal, where I was a columnist and editor. The scandal ultimately resulted in the closure of News of the World, at one point one of the world’s biggest-selling English-language newspapers. It was to leave no trace that investigators might use for evidence against him, his family or his favorite lieutenants. “Sidney Powell is lying by the way,” Carlson told fellow host Laura Ingraham on Nov. 18, 2020, referring to the infamous election conspiracy theorist. “Terrible stuff damaging everybody, I fear,” Murdoch told the network’s chief executive, Suzanne Scott.
Carroll has accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman changing room in the mid-1990s. Carroll says their encounter started off playful, with Trump asking Carroll to help him pick out a gift for a female friend. Eva Deitch for The Washington Post via Getty ImagesTrump's lawyers are likely to try and paint Carroll's lawsuit as a political witch hunt. Trump's lawyers asked to delay the trial a month so that they could probe Hoffman's involvement more, but that request was denied, though Kaplan allowed Trump's legal team to conduct another deposition with Carroll before the trial starts.
[1/2] U.S. President Donald Trump rape accuser E. Jean Carroll arrives for her hearing at federal court during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., October 21, 2020. There, he called Carroll's rape claim a "Hoax and a lie" for promoting her memoir, and maintained that she was "not my type!" Carroll first sued Trump for defamation in November 2019, five months after he first denied her rape claim. She has long accused Trump of stalling, and U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan has rejected multiple efforts by Trump to delay Carroll's case. Last year, Trump refused to let his Trump Organization concede wrongdoing in a New York criminal tax fraud case, which ended in a conviction that is being appealed.
