What to Know About the Iowa GOP Presidential Caucuses

Audience members listen as Nikki Haley speaks at an Ankeny, Iowa town hall last November, one of many visits by Republican presidential hopefuls to the state last year. Photo: Charlie Neibergall/Associated PressIowa’s presidential caucuses have for the past five decades awarded the small, mostly white state an oversize sway in the nation’s politics, providing everyday Iowans and the state’s elected leaders with access to powerful politicians, boosting profits for local television stations and helping secure deferential treatment for corn-based ethanol and other segments of its economy. News organizations from around the globe have descended on the state to cover the first-in-the nation event, which former President Donald Trump is heavily favored to win.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Nikki Haley has been waxing sentimental in recent days on the campaign trail about the fun she has had and the people she has met in the past year in this state that hosts the first 2024 Republican presidential caucuses Monday. Left unsaid is how eager she must be to get out of the state and pivot to New Hampshire, where the nation’s first primary, on Jan. 23, offers her the best prospect of throwing a roadblock in front of former President Donald Trump.

DES MOINES, Iowa—Sharon McNutt is planning on as many as 50 guests piling into her home on Monday evening and doesn’t care if they snack in her kitchen or settle into one of her favorite recliners. And she certainly doesn’t care if they bicker about politics. 245) in southwest Iowa appears to be the last practitioner of a disappearing tradition: hosting precinct meetings in a private home for the Iowa presidential caucuses, which this year will kick off the 2024 Republican nominating process. But a review of the locations where the 1,657 GOP precinct meetings are to be held revealed McNutt’s residence as a one-of-a-kind venue, something a state GOP spokesman confirmed. The rest of the Republican caucuses will be held in schools, libraries, churches and other public places.

But that expectation rests on hopes for a dramatic change in the race: Donald Trump’s departure.

GARNER, Iowa—Republican voters in Hancock County largely rejected Donald Trump eight years ago, giving him less than a fifth of the vote in the GOP caucuses. As recently as a year ago, some party faithful here and elsewhere in Iowa seemed eager to move on, saying they were tired of the former president’s chaos and liabilities. Now Trump appears poised to win this county Monday and claim victory in Iowa’s caucuses, powered largely by his overwhelming support among rural voters who see him as the best candidate to advance a populist conservative agenda. That pattern has played out in similar places across the country, helping explain why Trump has a hold over the Republican Party and is the nomination front-runner.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Political operatives have long said having a robust organizational effort that can turn out supporters on a cold winter night is critical for success in Iowa’s presidential caucuses. This year’s weather is taking the cold part to the extreme: Forecasts call for the lowest temperatures ever for an event that dates back to the 1970s. That could put a dent in turnout, especially among older voters, for the first 2024 Republican nomination balloting.

In the GOP debates so far, Nikki Haley has won plaudits for an ability to convey her message in a mostly positive tone. Photo: cj gunther/ShutterstockTUSCALOOSA, Ala.—The Republican presidential primary debate stage will shrink to four participants Wednesday evening, with the event expected to focus on two remaining competitors vying to be the main 2024 alternative to former President Donald Trump. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose campaigns have become increasingly combative in recent days, are trying to sell themselves as the most able to challenge to Trump as the Jan. 15 Iowa caucuses and the start of GOP nomination balloting approach.

Ron DeSantis, who campaigned at the Iowa State Fair this year, faces turmoil at a super PAC that supports his presidential run. “We’re going to win Iowa,” the Florida governor said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program. DeSantis drew a burst of much-needed media attention last week for his feisty televised debate with California Democratic Gov. GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, in red tie, drew a surge in attention last week for his debate with California Democratic Gov. On Saturday, DeSantis completed his tour of all 99 Iowa counties.

London CNN —The US dollar is barreling toward a 3.7% loss this month against a basket of six major currencies in what would be it worst monthly performance in a year. For countries that depend on commodity imports, a weaker dollar means they have to pay less for essentials like wheat and crude oil. A number of up-and-coming economies have debts denominated in dollars, and a weaker dollar can make servicing those debts less expensive. A fall in the greenback’s value also signals better investment opportunities outside the United States, McCormick told CNN. “A weaker dollar is a rising tide that lifts all boats,” he said.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa—The fate of Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign rests on a central question: Can she be all things to all Republicans? As the Republican presidential primary field begins to narrow, Haley’s rise in polls represents the re-emergence of a more traditional Republican at a time when former President Donald Trump dominates the party. Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, has made progress in consolidating the anti-Trump vote. In an interview, Haley declined to say whether she identifies more with the Trump wing of the party or traditional Republicans. But she must first get past Ron DeSantis, who is more closely aligned with Trump on policy and in temperament.

The hot word for CEOs on earnings calls is 'choiceful'
  + stars: | 2023-11-20 | by ( Amelia Lucas | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
So far in 2023, choiceful has appeared in 15 quarterly earnings calls for S&P 500 companies, according to a CNBC analysis of FactSet transcripts. In 2021, only the CEOs of Molson Coors and McCormick said "choiceful" when speaking to investors on their quarterly conference calls. But the Oxford English Dictionary notes the earliest known use of the word in the late 1500s. These days, CEOs have used it to describe a consumer whose behavior has changed over the last two years. That's where "choiceful" comes in handy again.

The stock of Club holding Morgan Stanley (MS) dropped to $70 from $100 before bouncing back to $80 when interest rates recently peaked. Morgan Stanley and Schwab did nothing bad or shameful, but their multiples are shadows of their former selves. At least Morgan Stanley has a nice dividend yield of 4.25%. The new book, "The Fund: Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend" — which Dalio and his lawyers have pushed back against — describes everything from Bridgewater's investment process to internal grudges and backstabbing to allegations of sexual harassment. Here are the places where the dozens of Bridgewater employees and consultants named in the book ended up. Dalio, the book said, wrote into the firm's bylaws that he could never hold that title again. Before that, she was the head of investment research and a co-chief investment officer for sustainability. He's worked at different funds since leaving in 2006, including Larch Lane Advisors and Bonaccord Capital as an investor and business-development professional.

The pay bumps could help win over some employees who balked at smaller bonuses last year that they blamed on losses from the retail operations. The firm's allocation for bonuses fell by as much as 40% in 2022, according to another source, after earnings slid 48%. Wall Street pay varies widely based on performance and market conditions, and bonuses account for a large share of compensation - in some cases more than double an employee’s annual salary. Goldman was involved in several major transactions in recent months that spurred optimism about a nascent market recovery. (AP) — New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas is facing simple battery and criminal mischief charges following a confrontation with a construction worker, police said Saturday. Thomas, 30, was arrested without incident Friday night, was cooperative with investigators and was released later that night, Kenner police Lt. Mark McCormick said. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the team has not publicly discussed Thomas' status for the game. Police say the incident occured in front of a home under construction near Thomas' home. In 2019, Thomas set an NFL record for catches in a season with 149.

Republican former President Donald Trump beat Democratic President Joe Biden here by 39 points in 2020. OHIOLiberal Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is seeking a fourth six-year term in a state, like West Virginia, that increasingly is Republican. There are at least four Republicans seeking their party's nomination, including State Senator Matt Dolan. Trump won the state by 16 points in 2020 and Tester is the only Democrat in the state's congressional delegation. Biden captured Michigan by just three points over Trump and the open Senate seat has attracted several aspirants from Democratic and Republican benches.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa—This community, long known for unpleasant smells wafting from its now-closed stockyards and still lacking some of the niceties enjoyed by other midsize cities, has always felt a bit looked down upon. Its airport code hasn’t helped. Sioux Gateway Airport, or SUX as it appears on tickets and bag tags, has been the butt of jokes in Iowa and beyond for decades. After complaints and failed efforts to change the code, Sioux City decided to lean into its unfortunate designation and, more recently, has expanded it well beyond the airport. Area businesses are increasingly embracing the branding and SUX is popping up all over the place.

Nikki Haley, who has shown momentum in recent weeks, came under sustained attack in Wednesday’s Republican presidential primary debate as she competes with Florida Gov.
