BRUSSELS, July 12 (Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Broadcom (AVGO.O) secured EU antitrust approval on Wednesday for its $61 billion proposed acquisition of cloud computing firm VMware (VMW.N) after offering remedies to help rival Marvell Technology (MRVL.O). The deal, Broadcom's largest ever, will help the chipmaker diversify into enterprise software. Broadcom offered Marvell and other rivals interoperability commitments related to its Fibre Channel Host-Bus Adapters (FC HBAs), a kind of storage adapters, the European Commission said, confirming a Reuters story last month. Marvell and other rivals will also have guaranteed access to the source code for all of Broadcom's current and future FC HBA drivers through an irrevocable open source license. "The commitments offered by Broadcom will enable its only rival Marvell, to continue competing on equal footing and ensure a similar protection for any future entrants," EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

Morgan Stanley offered up some of its top ways to play artificial intelligence as the technology enters a "golden age." But even after those significant surges, Morgan Stanley thinks the tailwinds are far from over. Given this setup, Morgan Stanley analysts highlighted 37 stocks as global AI winners with a combined market capitalization of $2.8 trillion. To compile the list, Morgan Stanley searched for areas of the tech supply chain situated for the strongest AI revenue exposure. Morgan Stanley expects the company's dominance to continue in the foreseeable future, calling it the "cleanest story" within AI hardware.

Shares of Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices both fell more than 2% in early trading after The Wall Street Journal reported the federal government is weighing new restrictions on exports of sophisticated chips used in artificial intelligence computing to China. The export restrictions under consideration would be imposed by the Commerce Department and would come after the U.S. government already limited the computing power of chips made for Chinese use. Nvidia responded to the earlier restrictions by building a lower-spec chip for the Chinese market. But under the new controls being considered, even that chip, the A800, would be export restricted without licensing, the Journal reported. The restrictions would also apply to companies that offer cloud-based computing solutions, the Journal reported, which have been used by some companies to skirt export controls.

A screengrab from the website of U.S. company Extreme Networks shows Russian manager Sergey Gusakov. The IT equipment sold in Russia by Gusakov's company Vektor-T is assembled in China and contains U.S. microprocessors, according to the people familiar with the matter and photographs seen by Reuters. "These violations will lead to a heavy strike to the reputation of the Extreme company against the background of the war in Ukraine," the complaint said. The photographs obtained by Reuters of the insides of switches sold by DCN and Vektor-T clearly show one of each. "The U.S. technology proportion of DCN products is very small," he said.

Bank of America says silicon-based chips are expected to grow to $10 billion by 2027InfiniBand (IB) and ethernet can both be used for AI computer networks. But Bank of America expects the global AI software market to reach $900 billion by 2026, up from just under $600 billion this year. But generative AI isn't like your average search engine. As big-tech cloud providers begin to integrate generative AI into their centers, the demand for things such as networking silicon is set to skyrocket. The investment bank expects ethernet to attract most of the $10 billion market share, growing from $500 million to $6 billion by 2027.

Nvidia reigns as the dominant artificial intelligence play, but investors may also want to keep an eye on networking chip stocks Marvell Technology and Broadcom , according to Bank of America. Networking semiconductors play a critical role in the graphics processing units underpinning many generative AI models, and these names should benefit from long-term demand for their Ethernet networking offerings, according to senior analyst Vivek Arya. Still, Arya labeled Nvidia as the best-positioned name. But all three stocks have gained this year as AI gains steam as an investment theme, with Nvidia soaring more than 195%. Broadcom and Marvell have added about 50% and 59%, respectively.

June 20 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems (CSCO.O) on Tuesday launched networking chips for AI supercomputers that would compete with offerings from Broadcom (AVGO.O) and Marvell Technology (MRVL.O). The chips are being tested by five of the six major cloud providers, Cisco said, without naming the firms. Cisco is a major supplier of networking equipment including ethernet switches, which connect devices such as computers, laptops, routers, servers and printers to a local area network. "G200 & G202 are going to be the most powerful networking chips in the market fueling AI/ML workloads enabling the most power-efficient network," Cisco fellow and formerly principal engineer Rakesh Chopra said. Cisco said the chips could help in carrying out AI and machine learning tasks with 40% fewer switches and a lesser lag, while being more power efficient.

There are too many articles and postings about how we are overdoing artificial intelligence, and how there's not enough substance to justify recent market moves. Still, I am worried about this week because for the first time in a bit I think we need to do some serious digesting. Given the market is officially overbought, I think I will wait until we have a couple of days down before it's worth pulling the trigger. The S & P 500 is going from strength to strength this year, closing at a one-year high last Friday and up over 10% year-to-date. While many analysts have cautioned that the rally could be a narrow-based one, with gains driven by just a few major tech stocks, some Wall Street pros are expecting the S & P 500 to rally further. Evercore ISI's Julian Emanuel told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Tuesday that he has raised his S & P 500 price target from 4,150 to 4,450 . Emanuel said that the AI buzz driving stocks has turned into a so-called "momentum market" like the Internet-related rally of the late 1990s to 2000. "The Momentum broadened last week into the larger S & P 500 and importantly the Small Cap Russell 2000; this broadening is very positive and looks set to continue," he wrote in notes sent to CNBC.

NEW YORK, June 1 (Reuters) - Short sellers in U.S. shares related to the semiconductor industry are down $18.31 billion in mark-to-market losses for the year to date, including $7.2 billion in losses since last week's rally in Nvidia's stock (NVDA.O), according to financial data firm S3 Partners. The PHLX semiconductor sector index (.SOX) gained roughly 15% in May and hit an over one-year high. "The Semiconductor sectors have been an investing desert for short sellers," S3 Partners analysts wrote in the report this week. In addition, S3 cited Marvell Technology Inc (MRVL.O), Broadcom Inc (AVGO.O) and Ambarella Inc (AMBA.O) among stocks prone to a short squeeze. "We expect short covering in these stocks as short sellers look to trim their exposure and limit future mark-to-market losses if these stocks continue to rally," S3 analysts said.
