NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge said Thursday he would take a fuller look at Donald Trump’s out-of-court comments and reconsider a $10,000 fine he imposed on the former president a day earlier at his civil fraud trial. The development came after Trump’s lawyers urged Judge Arthur Engoron to rethink the penalty. She sits next to Engoron, and Trump’s lawyers had groused a bit earlier about the clerk’s facial expressions and role in the case. Trump’s lawyers insisted anew Thursday that Trump was talking about Cohen. They pointed out that right after his reference to the person “sitting alongside” the judge, Trump said: “We are doing very well, the facts are speaking very loud.

Andrade and MacNeil take Pan Am Games spotlight

With marquee names in short supply, Olympic champions MacNeil and Andrade commanded the Pan Am stage, the Canadian tying American Gabi Albiero for first in women's 50 metre freestyle while Andrade soared to the top of the podium in the vault. Simone Biles aside, Andrade might just be the most intriguing athlete competing in her sport in Santiago. Biles may be recognised as the greatest gymnast of all-time but Andrade is the queen of the vault, holding the Olympic, world championship and now Pan Am Games crowns on the apparatus. MacNeil's fourth win in Santiago tied the record for most gold by a Canadian swimmer at a Pan Am Games while her six total medals (four gold, a silver and bronze) also equalled a single Games national mark. Chile enjoyed their best day of the Panamerican Games scooping up three gold to push their total to five while Argentina's struggles continued.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen once proclaimed he'd “take a bullet” for Donald Trump. Trump is expected to be in court for the highly anticipated testimony, detouring from his usual campaign haunts to the Manhattan courtroom for a sixth day this month. Trump attended the trial for two days last week — having planned the trip when it was expected that Cohen would be testifying. Trump is expected to testify later in the trial. James, a Democrat, has credited Cohen as the impetus for her civil investigation, which led to the fraud lawsuit being decided at the trial.

HOUSTON (AP) — The challenges facing Houston’s next mayor are familiar to many big cities: crime, crumbling infrastructure, budget shortfalls and a lack of affordable housing. “This (new) mayor comes along at a time when the city is doing well, though the city faces issues,” said Bob Harvey, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, a local business group. They highlight what they see as Houston’s failings while touting it as an international city teeming with diversity. NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump returns to a New York City courthouse Tuesday to be a spectator at the civil fraud trial threatening to disrupt his real estate empire. His appearance was initially supposed to coincide with testimony by Michael Cohen, his former attorney turned foe. But Cohen's planned appearance on the witness stand was delayed until at least next week, due to a health problem. Instead of Cohen, Trump's courtroom visit is likely to overlap with the resumption of testimony from his company's assistant controller, Donna Kidder. The trial concerns six remaining claims in the lawsuit, including allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

In a pretrial court filing, James’ office estimated that Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion. They've also called accountants Donald Bender and Camron Harris, whose firms Trump hired to prepare his financial statements. A retired Deutsche Bank official testified the financial statements were key to Trump securing hundreds of millions of dollars in loans. Weisselberg acknowledged that information in Trump’s financial statements wasn’t always accurate, such as valuing his penthouse based on the wrong size. In a decision last month, Engoron resolved the lawsuit's top claim, ruling that Trump committed years of fraud by inflating the value of assets in his financial statements.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump will back in court next week for his New York civil fraud trial, a person familiar with the former president’s plans told The Associated Press on Thursday, setting up a potential face-to-face showdown with fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen, who is expected to testify. Trump is expected to attend the non-jury trial Tuesday through Thursday next week, according to the person who confirmed the plans, which were first reported by news website The Messenger. Outside, Trump decried the civil trial a “sham,” a “scam,” and “a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time.” His campaign, meanwhile, attempted to capitalize with fundraising appeals tied to the proceedings. Trump isn’t required to be in court for the civil trial until he is called to testify in the few weeks. The civil trial, which doesn't have a jury because one is not required under the law, concerns allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

Trump's longtime finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, acknowledged in testimony Tuesday that information in the financial statements wasn't always accurate. The disclaimers say, among other things, that the financial statements aren't audited and that others “might reach different conclusions” about Trump's financial position if they had more information. It’s the first time a bank official has testified in court about the impact Trump’s financial statements had on his ability to obtain loans. Haigh said he reviewed Trump’s financial statements before approving the loans and, at the time, had no reason to doubt their validity. “I assumed that the representations of the assets and liabilities were broadly accurate," Haigh said of Trump’s financial statements.

The Aito brand, which Huawei makes in partnership with Seres Group (601127.SS), launched the M7 in July last year. As of June, Aito had shipped just 27,405 of the original M7, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. This comes as deep-pocketed investors — from top U.S. private equity and venture capital firms to global rivals like sovereign wealth funds — have intensified competition. Meanwhile, more than one-third of the clubs in the so-called "Big Five" leagues in Europe are backed by U.S. investors, including private equity and venture capital firms. "These recent transactions have set a precedent in terms of club valuation but also prompted many owners to consider selling to [private equity]," according to an analyst report from PitchBook. Some firms, like Sixth Street Partners, have found different outlets into taking a stake in European soccer, particularly in Spain's LaLiga. The shift is happening as soccer clubs have been looking for fresh capital following the distress stemming from the earlier days of the Covid pandemic.
