A historic lake effect snow event will blanket swathes of the country in white into the weekend, with up to five feet of snow possible in Buffalo, New York. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for 11 counties Thursday, saying the state and Buffalo area are "prepared" for the brunt of the major "life-threatening" storm. Lake effect snow occurs when arctic air races across the relatively milder water of the Great Lakes every fall. Rather by the late 21st century it is forecast that there will be a shortened lake effect snow season, and rather than peaking in fall and early winter, it'll be pushed back later to January through March. The lake effect snow will continue for areas downwind of the lakes into Sunday.
A 25-year-old man who jumped on top of an 18-wheeler and started dancing died after the truck passed under a bridge and he was knocked off, police said. The incident unfolded on Nov. 10 at about 11:35 a.m. at 200 Eastex Freeway, the Houston Police Department said in a Monday news release. The driver of the red Kenworth tractor-trailer truck was traveling southbound and didn’t realize when the man “jumped or climbed onto the top of the trailer portion of the vehicle,” police said. The man then “began dancing” and was possibly recording himself. When the truck passed underneath the Tuam Street bridge, the man “was struck and knocked off the trailer onto the freeway main lanes.”Paramedics responded to the scene and the man was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Prosecutor James Hingeley from the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney’s Office described facts in the case, noting all five individuals were shot. He said Jones shot victim Devin Chandler while he was sleeping, according to a witness, and he slid onto the floor. The witness reported that Jones was aiming at “certain people” and “not randomly shooting,” Hingeley said. At the time of his arrest in Chesterfield County, Jones had outstanding warrants for hit-and-run and reckless driving out of Petersburg, Virginia, Hingeley said. The University of Virginia canceled its final home football game of the season Wednesday in the wake of the shooting.
The school had been "reviewing a potential hazing issue" when the Office of Student Affairs "heard from a student that Mr. Jones made a comment to him about possessing a gun," the university said in a statement Tuesday. "The reporting party did not see Mr. Jones in possession of a gun," the statement said. As the probe moved forward, it was learned that "Mr. Jones previously had been convicted of a misdemeanor for a concealed weapons violation in 2021," the school said. But officials said they realized only after Sunday’s shooting that the report of his conviction was never relayed to the University Judiciary Committee. Jones had a difficult upbringing at home and was bullied at school, Logan said.
His father, Christopher Darnell Jones Sr, told NBC affiliate WBBT of Richmond, Virginia, “I can’t believe it was him. I don’t know what happened between then and now to cause this to happen,” he continued. He said some people were picking on him or whatever, he didn’t know how to handle it. She said that she didn't have contact with him after the shooting and didn't know what might have contributed to it. Now the father wants to speak face-to-face with his son and figure out what let up to the shooting.

A California mother has been charged with child endangerment after her 3-year-old son died of a fentanyl overdose earlier this year, police say. Jennifer Mae Niemann, 30, was the primary caregiver of the boy and was present when her child died on May 4, the San Luis Obispo Police Department said Thursday. Police received a call at 10:15 p.m. local time about an unresponsive 3-year-old boy who was turning blue and not breathing at a home in the 1600 block of Mill Street in San Luis Obispo. The boy was transported to a nearby hospital but never regained consciousness and was pronounced deceased that evening. On Monday, San Luis Obispo Police detectives went to San Diego to attempt to locate Niemann, who they described as transient, and she was located Tuesday and taken into custody.
A man was killed by New York City police officers in the famed Coney Island area after he allegedly threatened to shoot two women, police said. Three units responded to the corner of West 36th Street and Neptune Avenue, including one police marked vehicle with two uniformed officers and two unmarked vehicles manned by public safety officers, Maddrey said. As soon as the units arrived to the corner, officers saw a male with a gun. When officers exited their vehicles to approach him, he “immediately starts shooting at the officers,” Maddrey said. The suspect eventually got down on the ground, but continued to shoot at the officers.
Hurricane Nicole may have unearthed a Native American burial site dating back hundreds of years on a Florida beach, authorities said. Six skulls and other smaller bones turned up on Chastain Beach on South Hutchinson Island, said Martin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Budensiek. The bones of Native Americans were discovered in the area after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019. If the site is a Native American burial site, it is federally protected, and criminal charges will be pursued against anyone who tries to disturb the area, Budensiek said. A Tennessee man broke down the door of his ex-girlfriend’s home, kidnapped and attacked her in a rage, upset that he did not receive a lottery ticket and claiming she owed him money, authorities said. She told officers he was upset “due to him not receiving his lottery ticket and money he felt he was owed." It's not clear if she had a lottery ticket on his behalf. The woman told officers she couldn’t breathe for about five seconds, according to the affidavit. Hanes allegedly continued to ask for money, specifically $10,000 and she said she didn’t have that type of money to give him.
The boyfriend of a 22-year-old woman found dismembered, with her body parts stuffed into two suitcases, in her New York City apartment has been arrested in her grisly death. Justin Williams, 24, was arrested Monday and arraigned on indictment charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. Johnson went home after work on Aug. 21 and “and never exited the apartment again,” Gonzalez said. He then allegedly dismembered her body and concealed the remains in the two suitcases. Williams allegedly fled the apartment following a wellness check by building personnel who became concerned after they didn’t see Johnson for some time.
The chief financial officer of Tyson Foods and son of the company's chairman was arrested in Arkansas over the weekend after he entered a random woman’s home while intoxicated and fell asleep in her bed, according to police. John R. Tyson, 32, was found asleep at the home in the 400 block of North Mock Ave. in Fayetteville on Sunday at 2:05 a.m., according to the preliminary arrest report. The officer woke Tyson up and he sat up in bed but did not verbally respond. After briefly sitting up, he laid back down and attempted to go to sleep, the preliminary arrest report said. He joined Tyson Foods in 2019 and serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, according to the company's website.
The principal of a prominent Chicago high school has been removed from his duties over the handling of a student's German military officer costume on Halloween. A student donned the outfit for a costume contest on Halloween at Jones College Prep high school — an act “widely recognized by many students, staff” as “antisemitic,” Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez said in a statement Friday. “This incident caused harm to many students and staff, and it is completely inconsistent with our values as a school district. NBC News has reached out to Powers and the high school for comment. This isn’t Powers' first controversy at the elite selective enrollment high school near the city’s downtown.
Parents should not use infant head shaping pillows to change a baby’s head shape or symmetry, the Food and Drug Administration advised on Thursday. Head shaping pillows typically look like a small mat that slopes downward in the middle to an indent or hole designed to cradle the back of an infant’s head. Not all such pillows are labeled as "head shaping" — some are called baby head support pillows, head cushions, flat head pillows, or anti-flat head pillows. According to the FDA, marketing claims for head shaping pillows commonly suggest that they can improve an infant’s head shape and symmetry or prevent or treat flat head syndrome. The FDA also urged health care providers to discourage the use of infant head shaping pillows and to educate parents on the risks associated with them.

A Minnesota woman was fatally shot outside of her workplace last week by a coworker after she denied his repeated romantic advances, police said. Nicole Hammond, 28, was found shot the morning of Oct. 24 in the parking lot of a business in the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue Northeast in St. According to the autopsy, Hammond was shot in the right side of her neck and the bullet was found in the left shoulder area. The night prior to the shooting, Hammond indicated she “did not want to be touched by the defendant, nor did she want to be manipulated by him,” the probable cause statement said. Carpenter told police that he had walked towards Hammond’s car that morning, heard a gunshot and saw a person attending to her, according to the probable cause statement.
The man convicted of gunning down beloved Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle three years ago will be sentenced Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom. Holder was convicted of first-degree murder in July for the March 31, 2019, killing of Hussle in a parking lot outside the rapper’s South Los Angeles apparel shop. An Ohio man who's an extremist "Boogaloo Boi" has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill federal agents and boasting online about his weapons stash, including a grenade launcher, the FBI announced. The complaint says that since at least early 2021, McKillips had been posting messages insinuating or explicitly threatening to harm the government or federal agents. McKillips was arrested on criminal complaint charges of unlawful possession of a machine gun and interstate communication of threats, the FBI said. That profile posted a photo of an AR-15 style rifle fitted with a grenade launcher on Jan. 14, 2021, the complaint said. On July 6, 2021, a confidential source reported that McKillips had posted recordings in a Signal chat room talking about burning down federal buildings and shooting federal agents.
A manhunt is underway for a suspect who shot two police officers at close range and left them hospitalized in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday, officials said. Police are searching for Kendall Howard, 30, describing him as “armed and dangerous” in connection with the Tuesday shooting. The sentencing of Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz began Tuesday with victims and family members sharing their heartbreak before him in court. With so many who wish to be heard, the actual sentencing is expected to take place Wednesday, according to the Broward State Attorney’s Office. Stacey Lippel, a teacher at Parkland who was shot and survived, told Cruz: “You don’t know me but you tried to kill me." “Whatever pain you experience in prison will unfortunately be a fraction of what Ben endured,” his father, Eric Wikander, said. A 6-year-old boy missing from Florida since August has been found safe nearly 2,000 miles away in Canada, and his father and paternal grandmother have been taken into custody, police said. Indiana police will announce an update Monday morning in the the 2017 murders of two teenage girls in Delphi, Indiana, a case that has puzzled the community and online crime sleuths for years. Abigail “Abby” Williams, 13, and Liberty “Libby” German, 14, vanished while hiking in their hometown of Delphi, about 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis, in February 2017. Their bodies were found Feb. 14, 2017 in a wooded area near the Delphi Historic Trail, a half mile upstream from the bridge. For years police worked to find the girls’ killer and previously said the assailant may have had close connections to Delphi, a city of about 3,000 people. Police previously released two sketches of a suspect.
A murder-suicide investigation is underway into an Oklahoma house fire that left eight people dead, including six young children, police announced Friday. Two adults and six children — ranging in age from 1 to 13 years old — were found inside. Broken Arrow Police Chief Brandon Berryhill said Friday two adult suspects found deceased in the home are being investigated as suspects in the murder-suicide. He said the adults are being investigated as suspects in the murder-suicide due to the nature of where the adult and juvenile bodies were found. The official cause of death will be determined by the local medical examiner's office, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
A 7-year-old student brought a loaded gun to a Boston elementary school Thursday, police said, as city officials warn that charges may come for whoever allowed the child to access the weapon.
