“They are using food as a weapon,” a senior aid official told CNN. “No official travel authorization has been granted to humanitarian partners to implement activities outside of Sittwe township since November 2023,” a senior aid official told CNN. The UN aid officials made clear in their meetings, which have not been previously reported, that the status quo is unacceptable, the sources said. A World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Maungdaw was looted and burned in June, depriving that community of urgently needed food aid. A senior UN aid official in Myanmar blamed the funding shortfall in part on international apathy.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on August 08, 2024, in Palm Beach, Florida. "The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see: It's fewer insults, more insights and that policy contrast," Kellyanne Conway, a former Trump White House advisor, said Monday in a Fox News interview. "When Trump attacks Harris personally rather than on policy, Harris' support among swing voters rises, particularly among women. It's just a fact of life, right now," Peter Navarro, a former Trump White House aide, said on the conservative WarRoom podcast Monday. "You've got to make this race not on personalities," former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said earlier Monday in an interview on Fox News.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump on Monday posted on X – formerly known as Twitter – for the first time in nearly a year ahead of his conversation on the platform later in the day with X owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Trump regularly asserts on the campaign trail that he is a victim of what he calls “political persecution,” and the video appears to amplify that claim. The more that a broken system tells you that you’re wrong, the more certain you should be that you must keep pushing ahead,” Trump says in the voiceover. The video also includes lines that are staples of Trump’s campaign speeches, including: “They want to take away my freedom, because I will never let them take away your freedom. And we will liberate America from these villains once and for all.”And in another post, Trump asked, “Are you better off now than you were when I was president?”“Our economy is shattered.

The Federal Reserve sets interest rates, and it operates independently of the White House. Last month, Trump said that if elected he would "bring interest rates way down." President Joe Biden had banked on June’s presidential debate turning around a race that was slipping away from him. Now, Donald Trump may be laying a similar bet after reversing himself by agreeing to debate on ABC next month as his new Democratic opponent enjoys surging momentum. Tim Walz, Trump suddenly looks like old news — a crushing new experience for an ex-president who prides himself on driving the narrative. The clash also looms as an extreme test for Harris. CNN —Former Los Angeles city councilman and California state Sen. Nate Holden said Friday that he was with former President Donald Trump in the helicopter ride that made an emergency landing, despite Trump saying it was former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. “Willie is the short Black guy living in San Francisco,” Holden said in an interview with Politico late Friday. Holden recalled meeting with Trump at Trump Tower before departing for Atlantic City, New Jersey, where they were planning to tour Trump’s since-closed Taj Mahal casino. Also aboard was Barbara Res, Trump’s former executive vice president of construction, who told Politico that the man on the helicopter was definitely Holden. She recalled Trump joking about Holden being scared on the flight, with Holden noting to Politico that it was Trump who was “scared sh*tless.”

There, he told a story of a helicopter ride with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown that Mr. Brown denies. “It was Willie Brown,” Mr. Trump, who spent much of the last year hoping to make gains with Black voters, posted. U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks with members of the media before boarding Air Force Two at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Romulus, Michigan, U.S., August 7, 2024. "I couldn't ... disagree more strongly," Harris told reporters in Arizona, referring to the Republican presidential nominee's comments. "The Fed is an independent entity, and as president, I would never interfere in the decisions that the Fed makes." With just 87 days until the election, the vice president also told reporters that she is preparing to unveil an official economic policy platform in the coming days. Harris' comments drew a stark contrast between her and Trump, who said this week that the president should "have at least [a] say" in Fed policy.

The Trump campaign on Saturday said that a foreign hacker had breached its systems and gained access to internal communications. Politico began receiving leaked campaign documents from an anonymous source on July 22, according to the news outlet's report on Saturday. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the Trump campaign had been a target of the Iranian hacking plot. Politico reported that it began receiving Trump campaign documents from an anonymous email account identifying only as "Robert." Politico did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it was working with the Trump campaign and law enforcement to investigate the hack.

When reached by Business Insider about reports that Trump is frustrated over the Harris campaign's momentum, Steven Chueng, the Trump campaign spokesperson, called it "fake news." Brian Kemp has shown Republicans how they win in the increasingly purple swing state. I just want them to do their job for Georgia," Trump said of the Kemps during an August 3rd rally in Atlanta. But Trump's renewed feud with Kemp illustrates how, at any moment, the former president can harm his own standing. Unlike Harris, Trump is relying far more on outside groups to push the type of canvassing and get the out efforts expected of a presidential campaign. On Friday, Kemp offered another olive branch while jokingly comparing Trump to Tropical Storm Debby, which slammed the state.

Leavitt later clarified, "As President Trump said numerous times during the press conference, the questions being asked were difficult to hear. His position on mifepristone remains the same — the Supreme Court unanimously decided on the issue and the matter is settled." Also at Thursday's press conference, Trump was also asked how he planned to vote in Florida’s ballot initiative this fall to expand abortion access. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that the plaintiffs did not have standing to win the case, preserving access nationwide to abortion pills. At the time, RNC spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez said in a statement: "The Supreme Court has unanimously decided 9-0.
