The Federal Reserve is fed up with data revisions

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said large revisions in data are tainting his assessments of how the economy is doing. Al Drago/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesThat’s well above the average month-over-month revised change in job totals from 1973 to the latest available revision data, according to the BLS. The official summary of what Fed officials said and discussed during their September meeting — also known as the Fed minutes — stated: “A few participants observed that there were challenges in assessing the state of the economy because some data continued to be volatile and subject to large revisions.”Spokespeople from the Federal Reserve declined to answer which data Fed officials were referring to. Frequent and large revisions to economic data are weighing on Federal Reserve decision-making, Governor Michelle Bowman said. “We want to be data dependent, but not data point dependent,” Williams said.

Washington, DC CNN —The Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold interest rates steady Wednesday for the fourth consecutive meeting, leaving them at a 23-year high as policymakers likely discuss the timing of rate cuts. That’s because, if inflation drifts lower but interest rates remain elevated, it causes “real” interest rates to rise, unnecessarily squeezing the economy and risking job losses. A rapidly weakening economy threatening mass job losses is an obvious reason to cut rates, which most economists aren’t currently forecasting. But another concern that has gained some traction is the rise of inflation-adjusted interest rates, which is an argument for rate cuts. The Fed is set to announce its latest policy decision at 2 pm ET on Wednesday, followed by a press conference from Chair Powell at 2:30 pm ET.

Police said Wednesday that they charged Justin Mohn, 32, with first-degree murder and abusing a corpse after he beheaded his father, Michael, in their Bucks County home and publicized it in a 14-minute YouTube video that anyone, anywhere could see. YouTube, which is owned by Google, did not attend the hearing despite its status as one of the most popular platforms among teens. Major social media companies moderate content with the help of powerful automated systems, which can often catch prohibited content before a human can. New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Citibank for allegedly failing to protect and reimburse victims of electronic fraud, according to a Tuesday release. The suit claims that Citi does not have strong protections in place to prevent unauthorized account takeovers, misleads victims of fraud and illegally denies reimbursements. The attorney general's office said the alleged failure on Citi's part has cost New York account holders millions of dollars, and in some cases, their entire life savings. In a statement, Citi said the bank "works extremely hard" to prevent threats and assist customers who become victims of fraud. James alleged in the lawsuit that Citi must reimburse victims of fraud under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.

After all their economic misfortune, they'll still face a turbulent housing market and potentially tens of thousands of dollars' worth of necessary updates to boomers' aging houses. In his 2022 paper, "Who will buy the baby boomers' homes when they leave them? ", Engelhardt argued that mass aging would send ripples through the housing market but fail to push down prices significantly. After that point, demand for home purchases will once again outpace supply as millennials buy more homes and younger generations, like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, file in behind them. The timing of boomers' exit will mostly benefit younger generations, like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who should find themselves on steadier footing than their predecessors.

The “Peacock Exclusive Wild Card” game garnered 23 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. NBC said in a release that the game sets records for the “most-streamed live event in US history” and was also responsible for the most internet usage ever in the US on a single date, consuming 30% of internet traffic during the Saturday night game. That number also includes viewership figures from the local NBC affiliates in Miami and Kansas City and on the NFL+ mobile app, where the game was also shown outside of Peacock. Notably, the ratings for the exclusively streamed game was up 6% over last year’s primetime AFC Wild Card Game that was shown on NBC’s broadcast network. It recorded an average of 27 million viewers overall, which NBC said at the time made it the most-watched Sunday show since the 2023 Super Bowl.

Another recent survey by consulting firm Mercer found that employers expect to promote just under 10% of their employees this year. Expect, too, to see a wider variety of employers offer more financial wellness benefits in 2024. “After three years of turmoil it finally looks like [work from home] has stabilized and 2024 will look a lot like 2023. Employees who can work a hybrid schedule are generally working from home roughly 30% of the week (or about 1.5 days), Bloom noted. For example, someone with a busy work schedule may opt to take them via text or chat on their phone on a Sunday morning, he said.
