From September this year, the regular retirement age will increase by three months a year until 2030. The higher retirement age should tackle a pension funding deficit, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne told reporters on Tuesday as she laid out the reforms. Revamping the pensions system has been a key element of French President Emmanuel Macron’s election campaigns. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the retirement age is between 66 and 67, depending on the year in which you were born. An earlier attempt by Macron to revamp the pensions system was met with nationwide strikes in 2019 before being abandoned during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pension reform in France, where the right to retire on a full pension at 62 is deeply cherished, is always a highly sensitive issue and even more so now with social discontent mounting over the surging cost of living. Hundreds of yellow vests took to the streets of Toulouse, France, on Saturday to protest against Macron's reforms, such as the planned pension reform and the unemployment reforms. Alain Pitton/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesStrike threatMacron had to put the pension reform on ice in 2020 as the government rushed to contain the Covid outbreak and save the economy. Although recent strike action has been limited to specific sectors, such as refineries and airlines, outrage over pension reform could easily spark far broader protests. Polls show pension reform is unpopular.
PARIS—French police have raided the headquarters of Emmanuel Macron ‘s political party, prosecutors said Wednesday, as part of two probes into possible ties between consulting firms and France’s presidential campaigns in 2017 and 2022. France’s national prosecutors said police also searched the Paris offices of consulting giant McKinsey & Co. as well the headquarters of an association dedicated to funding Renaissance, Mr. Macron’s party.
"Oh FFS (for fuck's sake)," former Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves said on Twitter, encapsulating the general feeling among many of France's eastern allies. The annoyance among eastern allies has undermined Macron's own policy agenda to beef up European "strategic autonomy" separate from the U.S.-led NATO umbrella, with eastern allies now trusting the United States more for their defence. An eastern European diplomat said Macron had "misread" Russia once and the fear was he would do so again. The backbone of Macron's foreign policy since 2017 has been to launch initiatives and go against the grain. However, an increasing number of critics and allies see his thrust on Russia as his major foreign policy mistake.
PARIS — The White House is rolling out the red carpet for French President Emmanuel Macron — again. Though Macron was also honored with the first state dinner of Donald Trump’s presidency, the relationship between the two leaders devolved into tension that both Macron and Biden now are hoping to reverse. “We do not imagine that Congress, moreover, with a House of Representatives with a Republican majority, could fundamentally revise the IRA,” the Élysée official observed. Macron, and Europe more broadly, hope China can develop into more of a partner than a competitor, particularly with respect to trade. But above all, Macron is simply looking for some respect — or as the senior Élysée official put it, “Sovereignty.
White House executive chef Cris Comerford gave a media preview Wednesday of the state dinner for French President Emmanuel Macron. “You need France.”Then-President Trump hosted French President Macron at a state dinner in 2018. The state dinner may be the Biden administration’s way of apologizing for an unforced error of such magnitude, Fried said. “We owed the French one after that.”A dish is previewed for the Macron state dinner. The last state dinner at the White House was in 2019.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s meeting with President Biden at the White House on Thursday is intended in part at reaffirming the U.S.-France alliance. WASHINGTON—President Biden said he was open to making concessions to American allies who have objected to new U.S. subsidies for North American manufacturers, but he didn’t commit to specifics after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron , as the two leaders sought to project unity following months of tensions. Mr. Biden said he makes no apology for the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides subsidies to U.S. manufacturers and tax incentives for electric vehicles and other products that are assembled in North America. But he said changes may be needed to ensure the law doesn’t have unintended consequences.
They’re offering more policy briefings to longtime supporters, Zoom calls with top administration officials and White House tours, too. "The $500,000 people like me, we’re not going to be players in 2024," said Dick Harpootlian, a longtime Democratic donor and South Carolina state senator. For the White House, the shift is an acceleration of a courtship campaign that began more modestly before the midterm elections. Amid concerns about the omicron variant last year, the White House was forced to abandon plans for a more full set of holiday parties. Some of those same people were invited to the White House next month for an in-person policy briefing.
President Emmanuel Macron’s government spent nearly 900 million euros last year on consultants, according to a French Senate report. PARIS—French prosecutors have opened probes into the role played by consulting firms in France’s 2017 and 2022 presidential elections, widening an existing investigation into consulting firm McKinsey & Co. Earlier this year, French financial prosecutors opened a tax-fraud and money-laundering investigation into McKinsey.
The president of the lower house of the French Parliament, Yaël Braun-Pivet, subsequently suspended the legislative session. Charities helping the migrants have appealed to the French government to take them in or help find a solution. Party spokesman Victor Chabert said de Fournas was referring to migrants at sea in his Africa remark and not, as some in French media wondered, to his fellow lawmaker. Reacting to the event, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said that “racism has no place in our democracy.”She said the chamber “will have to take sanctions” over de Fournas’ remark without elaborating what those might be. National Rally’s leader, Marine Le Pen, lost her second bid for the French presidency to Macron in April.
French President Emmanuel Macron ’s government invoked rarely used powers Wednesday to override the National Assembly on a crucial budget vote, placing its pro-business agenda on a collision course with parliament. The Macron government’s decision to invoke Article 49 of France’s constitution allowed it to bypass parliament and pass a budget bill for 2023. The move, howevever, collided with Mr. Macron’s pledge to govern as a consensus builder after losing his majority in June in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron's government said Wednesday it would use a special constitutional power to force the bill for next year's budget through the National Assembly without a vote. Opposition lawmakers could call a no-confidence vote to protest the move, which some have denounced as undemocratic. A no-confidence vote is unlikely to pass despite opposition to the government's move because it would need the approval of at least 289 lawmakers, or half the seats in the lower house of France's Parliament. If some groups of lawmakers abstain while Macron's allies vote no, the threshold cannot be reached. In July, lawmakers failed to pass a no-confidence motion requested by the Nupes to symbolically mark its opposition to Macron's policies.
Macron’s government is also on the defensive in parliament, where it lost its majority in legislative elections in June. People gather Sunday in Paris for a march against the high cost of living and climate inaction. Paris police said they didn’t have an immediate estimate for the size of the dense flag-waving crowd that filled squares and streets. There were a few outbreaks of vandalism on the margins, with garbage bins set on fire and bank machines smashed. Demonstrating at Mélenchon’s side was French author Annie Ernaux, who won the Nobel Prize for literature this year.
