Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a campaign rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, U.S., October 30, 2024. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team said Tuesday that it reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that sets the stage for the department to conduct background checks and start the security clearance process for Trump administration nominees and appointees. The Trump transition team said its memorandum of understanding with the DOJ "allows the transition team to submit names for background checks and security clearances." Democratic senators have been especially insistent that background checks are needed for all of Trump's nominees before they can be considered for confirmation by the Senate. "It's really appropriate, though, to have FBI background checks" to help illuminate the allegations against Hegseth, Fetterman said.

An outside CEO would break from tradition at the chipmaker, which has historically promoted from within. While Gelsinger was hired from VMware in 2021, he had spent decades at the company in roles of increasing seniority. Interim executive chair Frank Yeary and a board-level committee are overseeing the search for a new CEO, Intel disclosed in a regulatory filing, and the process remains in its early stages. Intel's board may opt for an internal promotion, and internal candidates could include CFO David Zinsner or Intel products chief MJ Holthaus, the interim co-CEOs. Gelsinger will receive roughly $10 million in severance, Intel disclosed in a regulatory filing.

Sheriff Chad Chronister, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration, withdrew his name from consideration for the office on Tuesday, only three days after he was nominated. Sheriff Chronister, who is in charge of the sheriff’s department in the Florida county that is home to Tampa, announced his withdrawal in a message on social media, saying that as “the gravity of this very important responsibility set in,” he had changed his mind about accepting the nomination. “There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling,” he wrote. “I sincerely appreciate the nomination, outpouring of support by the American people, and look forward to continuing my service as Sheriff of Hillsborough County.”With 48 days still to go before Mr. Trump takes office, Sheriff Chronister is the second of Mr. Trump’s appointments to back out of a nomination. And a handful of other picks are facing potentially rocky paths in the Senate.

But Wall Street doesn’t believe the looming immigration crackdown will live up to Trump’s campaign trail hype. Nearly half of the investors anticipate annual immigration will average between 500,000 and 1 million under Trump, according to Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street bank found that more than 20% of investors expect immigration under Trump will be above the pre-pandemic pace of 1 million per year. “Our forecast is only moderately below the pre-pandemic trend because there are legal and logistical limits to executive action,” Goldman Sachs economists led by Jan Hatzius wrote in the report. Just about 10% of investors expect the Musk-led commission will be able to reduce government spending by more than $400 billion a year, Goldman Sachs found.

Ian Rapoport, appearing on NFL Network’s NFL Gameday, said the team will consider a multitude of top candidates for the job. Republicans are headed into 2025 in control of the presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. But there's still one outstanding House race yet to be called. Gray has 105,083 votes, compared to 104,856 votes for Duarte, according to the California Secretary of State's office. The race is a rematch of their 2022 contest, which saw Duarte ultimately defeat Gray by 564 votes out of nearly 134,000 ballots cast. Due to the number of competitive US House races in California, a state with over 22 million registered voters, control of the chamber can theoretically rest on the Golden State alone.

She wants to rebuild for her family of six, but the costs are overwhelming, especially since her rental assistance ran out two months ago. For many Lahaina homeowners, rental assistance through their insurance ended in October after they’d spent the first couple of months post-fire filing claims and getting shuffled into hotels. Carolyn Auweloa and Mikey Burke have started Lahaina Community Land Trust so residents have the option to stay in Lahaina or sell within the community. Before they can apply for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s rental assistance, homeowners must first exhaust all of their LOU and ALE policies, which cover rental costs when a disaster makes your home uninhabitable.
