Days after Columbia University’s president testified before Congress, the atmosphere on campus remained fraught on Sunday, shaken by pro-Palestinian protests that have drawn the attention of the police and the concern of some Jewish students. Over the weekend, the student-led demonstrations on campus also attracted separate, more agitated protests by demonstrators who seemed to be unaffiliated with the university just outside Columbia’s gated campus in Upper Manhattan, which was closed to the public because of the protests. Some of those protests took a dark turn on Saturday evening, leading to the harassment of some Jewish students who were targeted with antisemitic vitriol. An Israeli airstrike on Iran on Friday damaged an air defense system, according to Western and Iranian officials, in an attack calculated to deliver a message that Israel could bypass Iran’s defensive systems undetected and paralyze them. The strike damaged a defensive battery near Natanz, a city in central Iran that is critical to the country’s nuclear weapons program, according to two Western officials and two Iranian officials. The attack — and the revelation on Saturday of its target — was in retaliation for Iran’s strike in Israel last week after Israel bombed its embassy compound in Damascus. But it used a fraction of the firepower Tehran deployed in launching hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel. CNN —Police in Brazil have detained a woman suspected of wheeling a dead man, who she said was her uncle, to a bank to withdraw a four-figure loan. Footage of the woman’s encounter with the bank has sparked a nationwide discussion in Brazil after going viral on social media. But the elderly man in the video – filmed by a bank attendant – remains unresponsive. When paramedics arrived, they concluded that the man had been dead for a couple of hours and must have been dead when he arrived at the bank. CNN —Disgraced former Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales was detained and released after questioning upon arriving in Madrid from an international flight, according to Spain’s Civil Guard. A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Rubiales was detained this morning after landing at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic. He was detained by the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit (UCO) on the runway before being driven away in a van. The UCO is a body of the Spanish Civil Guard which investigates and fights serious and organized crime in Spain. The son of a politician from the Dominican Republic was fatally shot outside a gas station in Houston on Monday night in what the police said they believed was a “targeted” drive-by shooting. The Houston Police Department on Wednesday identified the man who was killed as Luis Alfredo Pacheco Rojas, 34, son of Alfredo Pacheco, the president of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic. Another 29-year-old man who was injured by gunfire in the attack had not yet been publicly identified. The incident began around 7 p.m. on Monday, when Mr. Pacheco and three men in a black Cadillac Escalade stopped at a gas station in southeast Houston, according to the Police Department. The four men went inside the gas station, and immediately afterward they returned to the Escalade.

John Barth, who, believing that the old literary conventions were exhausted, extended the limits of storytelling with imaginative and intricately woven novels like “The Sot-Weed Factor” and “Giles Goat-Boy,” died on Tuesday. His death was confirmed by Rachel Wallach, who works in communications at Johns Hopkins University, where Mr. Barth was an emeritus professor of English and creative writing. She said she did not have further details. Mr. Barth was 30 when he published his sprawling third novel, the boisterous “The Sot-Weed Factor” (1960). It projected him into the ranks of the country’s most innovative writers, drawing comparisons to contemporaries like Thomas Pynchon, Jorge Luis Borges and Vladimir Nabokov.

CNN —Spanish prosecutors are seeking a prison term of two years and six months for former soccer chief Luis Rubiales for giving an unwanted kiss to star forward Jennifer Hermoso after Spain’s World Cup victory. The kiss was televised globally and the scandal overshadowed a historic moment for Spain’s women’s team which was celebrating its first-ever World Cup win. Rubiales described the kiss as “mutual” – a claim Hermoso has strongly denied – and said he faces “excessive persecution” from authorities.
