MEXICO CITY, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Mexican distiller Becle (CUERVO.MX), the world's largest tequila producer, lost $1.54 billion in market capitalization from a share selloff on Thursday after a stronger peso battered profits. Mexican firms' foreign income was devalued by gains in the peso, which strengthened 14% to the dollar over the year ending Sept. 30. Becle said it would continue shifting into the premium-priced liquor market and planned capital spending in the lower range of $200 million to $225 million this year. When stripping out the effects of foreign exchange, annual sales should still grow by a high-single digit percentage, Becle said. Brianna Mckiddy and her husband moved in August from Southern California to Houston. I was born and raised in Southern California, but in early August, I moved to Houston with my husband. I was pretty nervous about what living in Houston would be likeI was worried people in Texas would judge me for being from California. Thankfully, Houston is a massive city , so it's not like we had to transition from Southern California to a tiny town. It makes sense to me that so many people are leaving California for TexasI think many Californians are moving to Texas to lower their cost of living.

CNN —Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips announced Thursday that he is running for president, kicking off a long-shot Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. “I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country, but it’s not about the past. Phillips is expected to formally announce his campaign Friday in Concord, where he’ll file to run in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary. Biden will not file to appear on the New Hampshire Democratic primary ballot because the state isn’t complying with the national party’s revised nominating calendar, which demoted its first-in-the-nation primary status to second. And it all points to the same thing,” Phillips told CNN after he stepped down from leadership.

When John Paul DeJoria first started selling tequila, he knew plenty about business — but "nothing whatsoever" about the liquor industry, he says. He was convinced he had a product superior to anything else on the market, and he knew he could sell it. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The state of Florida is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block lower court rulings that prohibit the enforcement of a new law targeting drag shows. Florida officials filed an application with the nation's highest court on Friday asking that the prohibition against enforcing the anti-drag show law only be limited to the Orlando, Florida, restaurant which challenged its constitutionality. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s granting of a preliminary injunction stopping the law from being enforced. The appeals court panel ruled against a request from Florida officials to limit the injunction to the Hamburger Mary's restaurant, saying that Florida officials hadn’t shown that the lower court erred by prohibiting the universal enforcement of the law. I’m almost embarrassed to share that Zoo Pals are paper plates that feature the bright, adorable faces of animals like pigs, turtles, ducks and whales. And I had an incentive to finish my plate so I could see my Zoo Pal’s face again. In August Hefty relaunched Zoo Pals after discontinuing the plates featuring animals nearly a decade ago. Hefty said one of the reasons it brought back Zoo Pals was "so our fans can relive their fondest childhood memories." From Palm Beach to Miami Beach, luxury home prices in Florida's richest enclaves are reaching new records as billionaires and millionaires continue to buy up property. The average price per square foot of homes sold in Palm Beach reached $4,554, more than 2.5 times more expensive than Manhattan. How Jesmyn Ward Is Reimagining Southern Literature
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Imani Perry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +5 min
Ward is classically beautiful — delicate and golden-skinned with her hair hanging in long curls. The town is important to Ward for another reason, though: Her great-grandfather Harry was the son of a white mother, Edna. Ward borrowed her family’s complex racial history in writing “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” That family history tells us something about how Ward thinks about history and its relationship to her fiction. The contours of Ward’s life were formed by two hurricanes. In 1969, Hurricane Camille struck, marking a terrible watershed in Black life on the Gulf Coast.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A ruling prohibiting the enforcement of a new Florida law targeting drag shows will stay in place for the time being, according to a federal appeals court decision. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a lower court's granting of a preliminary injunction stopping the law from being enforced until a trial is held in Orlando, Florida to determine its constitutionality. The law was challenged by the owner of a Hamburger Mary’s restaurant and bar in Orlando, which regularly hosts drag shows, including family-friendly performances on Sundays that children were invited to attend. The restaurant owner said the law was overbroad, was written vaguely and violated First Amendment rights by chilling speech. Venues that violated the law faced fines and the possibility for their liquor licenses to be suspended or revoked.

Uber announced on Wednesday that its Uber Eats app now allows customers to order from two stores at the same time. Uber said it's part of an effort by Uber to be more green and to help save customers money. It may help the company keep customers from using competitors like DoorDash, which has had a similar feature since 2021. Unlike DoorDash's option, Uber Eats allows you to add from a secondary location before checkout. Once you finish choosing food from your first location, you'll see a notification bar that says "Bundle another store" which lets you add goods from somewhere else.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Constellation Brands CEO Bill Newlands highlighted the past quarter's success in its beer brands and said the company has been shifting its focus from mainstream to higher-end brands. Constellation reported earnings Thursday, with its beer portfolio seeing double-digit sales growth. Newlands chalked up some of this underperformance to the mainstream brands in its spirits and wine business. Additionally, Constellation's earnings report showed that and its higher-end wine and liquor brands — like Meiomi and Kim Crawford wine brands — outperformed the rest of the group. "Today it's one-third, and even though that area continues to drag on the overall business, the top end of our wine business is doing quite well and taking share."

The company, called Gatsby Chocolate, appeared on Friday's season premiere of ABC's "Shark Tank." The appeal for Gatsby Chocolate was evident — lots of people have a sweet tooth, and a candy bar with less calories but "no compromise on taste" sounds like a no-brainer. Industry experts say even a small increase in crime can have massive, cascading effects that cause retailers to close stores. And stolen items can have an outsized impact on store profitability, considering the razor thin profit margins many large retailers typically operate at. “Increasing store crime is another variable in play right now for retailers,” said Zak Stambor, senior retail & ecommerce analyst with Insider Intelligence. Organized retail crimeAt issue is a particular type of store theft that loss prevention experts classify as “organized retail crime” or ORC. Last month, Dick’s Sporting Goods warned that retail theft was damaging its business and would lead to lower annual profits.
