Many shoppers are trading down to less expensive clothing and accessories—swapping Lululemon leggings for Uniqlo and expensive lingerie for Target bras and panties—as inflation eats into their disposable income and a rocky stock market erodes their wealth. Grace Morris is a 20-year-old bikini barista in Lacey, Washington. That was something that really surprised me about the job: Customers have paid for my groceries, furniture, and even my rent. There's a false perception that being a bikini barista is a "gateway job" into dancing or sex work. Being a bikini barista has given me a kind of confidence that I've never had before. Remember slips? Your mother or grandmother likely wore those fusty, lace-trimmed polyester or silk skirts and dresses underneath their clothing, so that no trace of the human body could be detected. These days, slips are more likely to be worn as cheeky clothing on their own, and lingerie pieces designed to be worn out, such as bra tops, are widespread. But until now, pants or skirts with some level of coverage have remained de rigueur for a stroll around town or a trip to the market.

BRA-STRUCK Going back to the office—and back to bras—doesn’t mean you have to relinquish the comfort of sporting a soft bra (or none at all). At one retailer, Bare Necessities, sales of wireless bras doubled between 2020 and 2022.
