Apple plans to release new versions of several AirPods models next year, according to a report from Bloomberg. Apple's wireless headphones business has become a moneymaker for the company and requires regular updates to keep the product fresh and demand high. Since they were first announced in 2016, Apple's wireless white buds have become ubiquitous on big-city mass transit and inside offices and schools around the country. Apple's AirPods Pro, which cost $249, got minor updates last year, and this fall added a model with a USB-C port. Apple said on Tuesday that it supports nationwide right-to-repair regulation that would make iPhone parts and tools available to customers, the latest sign of the company's shift toward supporting independent repair. Apple said it sees "real value" in a national law at a White House event on Tuesday. In a short talk, Apple service VP Brian Naumann said that Apple makes parts, tools, and manuals available to independent repair stores in the U.S., highlighting the company's current policy under its self-service repair program. The recent endorsement of the California law and the pending national bill is a shift from Apple, which previously opposed right-to-repair laws. But Apple has relaxed its position in recent years, introducing a program to rent tools and buy parts in 2021.

The new silicon includes Qualcomm's X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android phones. The speed at which a smartphone chip processes AI models could represent a new feature battleground between high-end Android phones from companies such as Asus, Sony and OnePlus versus Apple's iPhones, which are also getting new AI features on an annual basis. Now, Qualcomm said, its smartphone chip can handle the bigger AI models used in generative AI — as many as 10 billion parameters. That's still less than some of the biggest AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT3, which has about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm executives said these kinds of AI models can run on devices if the chips are fast enough and equipped with enough memory.

Intel stock dropped 3% Monday after Reuters reported that Nvidia and AMD were working on Arm-based PC chips. Intel currently has the majority of the market for PC chips, with AMD coming in second. Intel's PC chips are based on the x86 instruction set. Chips that use the Arm-based instruction set, like those for smartphones, often use significantly less power, which is critical for battery-powered devices. Qualcomm has been working on its own Arm-based PC chips for years, although it has yet to gain significant sales traction.

A month after Apple's latest iPhones came out, analysts and investors are starting to see signs of slow demand in China versus last year's models. Sales of Apple's iPhone 15 models in their first 17 days are down 4.5% in China versus last year, according to an estimate from Counterpoint Research. Jeffries analysts say "weak demand" in China has knocked Apple off the top spot for smartphone market share in the country. It's a tough smartphone market for everyone. "Apple, we suspect, could be down five-ish percent — and the China market is down at least 5%," Counterpoint research director Jeff Fieldhack told CNBC.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Tuesday that it plans to prevent the sale of more advanced artificial intelligence chips to China in the coming weeks. Those earlier restrictions banned the sale of the Nvidia H100, which is the processor of choice for AI firms in the U.S. such as OpenAI. The new rules will ban those chips as well, senior administration officials said in a briefing with reporters. Other rules will likely hamper the sale and export to China of semiconductor manufacturing equipment from companies such as Applied Materials , Lam and KLA. Companies that want to export AI chips to China or other embargoed regions will have to notify the U.S. government.

But according to Deepwater Asset Management, there's one under-the-radar AI stock that will be essential for the long-term infrastructure rollout of artificial intelligence. "An under-the-radar AI stock is Vertiv," Doug Clinton, managing partner at Deepwater, told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" last week. The company's specialty is graphics processing units, or GPUs, which have become the preferred chips for the large AI models that underpin generative AI software. "We think [Vertiv has] a great tailwind for the next three to five years as this AI hardware buildout continues," Clinton added. Alphabet Alphabet , which Clinton described as Deepwater's largest AI holding, has a "great catalyst" for the latter half of this year: the launch of its latest AI model Gemini.

The deal with Microsoft wasn't completed and Giannandrea said he believed Apple CEO Tim Cook told Microsoft it wasn't going forward. Google pays Apple as much as $19 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple products, according to an estimate . Microsoft was interested in Apple paying for improvements to the search engine, Giannandrea said, including expanding it to additional international markets. Intel said it will treat its programmable chip unit as as a standalone business, with an aim to spin it out through an IPO in the next two to three years. Intel's Programmable Solutions Group will have its own balance sheet as it heads toward independence. The move also highlights the strong demand in the semiconductor industry for field programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs. Intel's FPGAs are sold under the Agilex brand. Intel doesn't break out PSG sales yet, but said in July that the unit had three record quarters in a row, offsetting a slump in server chip sales.

Google is making big changes to prevent Gmail spam

Google will make it harder for spammers to send messages to Gmail users, the company said Tuesday. The company said it will require emailers who send more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail users to offer a one-click unsubscribe button in their messages. Google says it has signed up Yahoo to make the same changes, and they'll come into effect in February 2024. The moves highlight the ongoing fight between big tech companies and spammers who use open systems such as email to send fraudulent messages and annoy users. About half of all emails sent in 2022 were spam, according to an estimate from Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

Under scrutiny is a deal in which Google pays Apple billions of dollars to be the default search engine on the iPhone's browser and other settings. Google could pay Apple as much as $19 billion this year, according to an estimate from Bernstein. Cue, who negotiated the deal with Google from Apple's side, is expected to testify that Apple picked the Google search engine as an iPhone default because it was the best product. He's also expected to say that Apple doesn't see a reason to create a new Apple search engine because Google already exists, according to a person familiar with Cue's anticipated testimony. "I think their search engine is the best," Apple CEO Tim Cook said when asked about using Google as the iPhone's default search engine in 2018.

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have a new frame design, which could make repairing the devices' screens or swaps of their batteries easier, according to a teardown analysis by iFixit, a parts vendor and gadget-repair advocate. That's in part because Apple uses software to lock parts to specific devices, making independent fixes more difficult or near impossible. Last year's mainstream model of the iPhone 14 — not the pricier Pro — also had a design featuring removable back glass. It requires manufacturers such as Apple to make rental tools, repair guides and authorized parts available to users to repair devices at home. In 2022, Apple introduced Self Service Repair, which allows repair shops and end users to rent professional-level repair tools and buy replacement parts from Apple.
