They hoped that President Biden, 81, could convince voters that his age was nothing to worry about. Biden’s voice was hoarse and halting. “Rather than dispel concerns about his age,” wrote my colleague Peter Baker, Biden “made it the central issue.”Some Democrats are now pushing for him to drop out of the race. “Biden is about to face a crescendo of calls to step aside,” a Democratic strategist told Peter. It has run dry.”Donald Trump, 78, delivered his false statements with conviction, affirming many voters’ concerns about his character and the threat he poses for democracy.

None of these women are real — everything about them, even the emotion that flickers across their faces, is generated by artificial intelligence (AI), for the world’s first ever AI beauty pageant. Alex Jones does not, for now, have to turn over the Infowars bank accounts to the Sandy Hook families he owes millions, a bankruptcy judge ruled on Thursday. The ruling by Judge Christopher Lopez is the latest turn in an increasingly acrimonious battle between two groups of Sandy Hook families fighting to be paid defamation damages from Mr. Jones. “Let’s just do this with process and transparency,” Judge Lopez said in the hearing, held in Houston. The families of eight victims who sued Mr. Jones in Connecticut had filed an emergency motion asking Judge Lopez to block a court’s ruling last week granting Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, who sued Mr. Jones in Texas, the right to seize Mr. Jones’s business bank accounts, which contain roughly $2 million. Mr. Heslin and Ms. Lewis are the parents of Jesse Lewis, 6, who died at Sandy Hook.

And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Getting Aid Into Gaza

Humanitarian groups have thousands of tons of food, fuel and medicine ready to send to Gaza. Aid groups want to protect their workers from bombs and gunfire. In other words, the people in charge of allowing aid into Gaza have prioritized their own interests over helping hungry Palestinians. In doing so, they’ve repeatedly made decisions that humanitarian groups can’t overcome. Today’s newsletter will explain what’s keeping aid out of Gaza.

His teacher yelled at him, he said. And when Ms. Lopez picked him up from school, he would often immediately start to cry. This year at a new school, Nathanael, 7, was happier. He shared a teacher with only six other students — not in one classroom, but in the entire school. Nathanael attended a microschool, an increasingly popular type of super-small, largely unregulated private school, often serving fewer students than are enrolled in a single classroom at a traditional school.

CEO Tim Cook unveiled Apple Intelligence, a generative AI system partly powered by ChatGPT (for now). Assuming Apple Intelligence works as intended, there will be even more reason to switch to or stay with Apple. Add it all together, and, as Linette Lopez writes, Apple may be the one Big Tech company getting AI right.

Apple's scale and specificity of vision also make it the first Big Tech company to get AI integration right. The fact that people are disappointed in Apple says more about the hype around AI's capabilities than it does about Apple. In that way, Apple's cautious approach may be a service for the rest of the tech industry. By slowly acclimatizing its constellation of users to AI that makes their lives better instead of frustrating them, Apple makes the tech feel like a natural upgrade instead of an unreliable, scary intrusion. The high-profile fitness guru said in the lawsuit that Roup copied her signature workout, the "Tracy Anderson Method" or "TA Method" — a dance-based workout routine. The order added, "And because the TA Method is uncopyrightable, the Court need not reach the issues of whether the TA Method could be considered choreography and if TAMB [Tracy Anderson Mind and Body] actually owns the copyrights." "We are pleased with the Court's ruling unequivocally rejecting Tracy Anderson's copyright claim, finding that the TA Method is not copyrightable, full stop," Bach said. A federal judge on Friday ordered the liquidation of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones′ personal assets and was still deciding on his company's separate bankruptcy case. Judge Christopher Lopez approved converting Jones' proposed personal bankruptcy reorganization to a liquidation. He was still set to rule on whether Jones' company, Austin, Texas-based Free Speech Systems, also should be liquidated. It wasn't immediately clear what will happen to Free Speech Systems, which is Infowars' parent company. If Free Speech Systems' case is dismissed, the company could return to the same position it was in after the $1.5 billion was awarded in the lawsuits.

CNN —A Texas bankruptcy court judge has approved the liquidation of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ personal assets, setting the stage for repayment to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims. Last week, Jones agreed to convert his personal bankruptcy into a Chapter 7 liquidation. The seismic move paves the way for Jones to no longer own Infowars, the influential conspiracy empire he founded in the late 1990s. Texas Judge Christopher Lopez will also on Friday consider liquidating Jones’ company Free Speech Systems, the parent company of Infowars, to pay the judgments to the Sandy Hook families. Jones acknowledged Friday that his most famous media property is likely to go away as part of his ongoing bankruptcy case.

The European Central Bank began easing interest rates on Thursday, cutting its benchmark rate by 0.25%. Investors and economists expect the Federal Reserve to follow suit and cut interest rates in September. This combination means there's a good chance that the September cut Wall Street is praying for may never materialize. The US already has somewhat higher interest rates than other countries — the Fed's benchmark rate is 5.25%- 5.50%. And in Asian economies, where interest rates are already significantly lower than in the US, things could get even messier.

In India, a powerful leader wins another term but sees his party’s majority vanish. In South Africa, the governing party is humbled by voters for the first time since the end of apartheid. In Britain, a populist insurgent barges into an election that is shaping up to be a crushing defeat for the long-ruling Conservatives. If there is a common thread halfway through this global year of elections, it is a desire by voters to send a strong signal to the powers that be — if not quite a wholesale housecleaning, then a defiant shake-up of the status quo. For years, populist and strongmen leaders have chipped away at democratic institutions, sowing doubts about the legitimacy of elections, while social media has swamped voters with disinformation and conspiracy theories.

New York CNN —Hourly retail security workers are now wearing police-like body cameras at major stores. The manufacturer of Taser devices and other security companies are now designing and marketing body cameras specifically for retail workers. “Body cameras are just one of the many ways that we work to support a safe store environment,” the spokesperson said. Bakery chain Greggs gave employees body cameras after a rise in sausage roll thefts and threats from customers. Applebaum also expressed concerns about the information the body cameras are collecting and whether it could be used to stymie union organizing attempts.

CNN —With an election looming, President Biden’s new executive action on the border aims to send a loud and clear message about his approach to immigration. The president’s proclamation, announced Tuesday, still allows for the normal flow of commerce and legal immigration across the border. But it bars migrants who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum once a daily threshold is met. Border authorities encountered around 3,500 migrants crossing the border unlawfully on Monday, according to a Homeland Security official, above the threshold needed for the executive action to take effect. And immigrant rights advocates warn that closing the border to asylum seekers will endanger vulnerable people and ultimately make the border less safe.
