As of Monday, the Kremlin announced that Ukrainian troops had advanced almost 19 miles into the western Russian region. In a public meeting that afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed his military to purge Ukrainian troops from Kursk. Matthew Savill, director of military sciences at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, assessed on Monday that some Russian troops had been moved from within Ukraine, but the scale is unclear. He said this would likely only be incidental to Ukraine's main strategic goal in the Kursk attack.

In a Telegram post on Friday, Russian military expert Vladislav Shurygin said that Ukraine had exposed serious problems with Russia's command. The Russian military has made slow but incremental progress in its campaign in the Donetsk region of east Ukraine recently, tempering criticism. Ukraine's Kursk incursion, though, has renewed questions about the effectiveness of Russia's military command, which, according to a March Congressional report, is often excessively rigid and slow to react to developments. The unprecedented assault began on Tuesday, when up to 1,000 troops entered the Kursk region, according to Russian reports. In Ukraine, the country continues to battle Russia on domestic fronts, including a deadly air attack early Sunday on Kyiv. Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, has also sent more troops to its border with Ukraine and said Saturday that Ukrainian drones had violated its airspace. Top Russian general Valery Gerasimov boasted last week that Ukrainian troops had been stopped, but Russia is yet to report pushing Kyiv’s forces back across the border. CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed Kyiv’s troops are fighting inside Russia, days into the surprise Ukrainian cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region that has become a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. Now into its sixth day, the attack on Kursk is a significant development in the more than two-year old conflict. The surprise factor appear to have worked: as of Sunday, Russian troops seemed to struggle to stop the Ukrainian advances and push Kyiv troops back. The governor of Kursk region has urged authorities there to speed up evacuations on Sunday. Early on Sunday, Moscow launched drone and missile attacks against Kyiv region, according to local officials.

Russia moved extra tanks, artillery and rocket systems to its southern Kursk region and imposed anti-terrorism measures in border areas as it battled a shock incursion by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, posted a video purporting to show them in control of a town near the border, the first pictorial evidence of their cross-border advances. The video, released Wednesday by the Kremlin, showed the Russian president was not happy with news from the southern region of Kursk. Russian troops appear to have halted the northward advance of Ukrainian soldiers who launched a surprise cross-border attack five days ago, but have not stopped their eastward push, military analysts say, as Moscow tries to contain Kyiv’s largest assault into Russian territory since the start of the war. Yet despite any Russian boasting that might garner, the incursion into the southwestern region of Kursk has also prompted questions over how it was allowed to happen in the first place. Andrei Gurulyov, a retired military officer who is now a member of Parliament, on Friday condemned Russia’s response and level of preparedness. “There is no military system in place for guarding the state border, no reserves and no second lines of defense,” he said on Telegram, adding, “If the Ukrainian Armed Forces spent two months preparing for this, how did we miss it?”The assault has also left analysts wondering why Ukraine would take such a risk, with some suggesting a desire to draw Russian troops away from the front lines. On Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine alluded to another possible benefit: newly captured Russian troops who could be traded for Ukrainian prisoners of war.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. But as the scale of the attack became clearer, with thousands of Ukrainian troops advancing up to 6 miles into Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin hurried to contain the fallout. Ukraine's attack catches Russia off guardA Russian military video showing a Ukrainian tank during an attack on the Kursk region in Russia in August. It's led to fierce criticism of the Kremlin from ultranationalist bloggers, who've questioned why the Russian military was so unprepared and criticized chaotic attempts to evacuate civilians. Putin has so far been able to avoid major domestic unrest from the two-year war — despite the vast casualties it's inflicted on the Russian military. But the 2023 rebellion by the Russian mercenary group Wagner exposed Putin's vulnerability to blowback from events in Ukraine.

Kursk was still reporting missile danger alerts as of Friday, according to Google-translated Telegram updates from regional Governor Alexei Smirnov, who said the local situation remained "difficult." Moscow has continued its own advances, with a Russian missile hitting a supermarket in the town of Kostiantynivka in the front-line Ukrainian region of Donetsk on Friday. Ukrainian forces pressed deeper into Russia on Friday, trying to capitalize on their surprise cross-border offensive, as Moscow moved quickly to shore up its defenses against the largest assault on Russian soil since the war began. After capturing several small settlements the last few days, Ukraine was battling to take full control of a town near the border and sending small units to conduct raids farther into the southwestern Russian region of Kursk. At the same time, the Russian military announced it was sending more troops and armored vehicles to try to repel the attack. Russian television released videos of columns of military trucks carrying artillery pieces, heavy machine guns and tanks. Perhaps preparing for retaliation, Ukrainian authorities on Friday said they were evacuating 20,000 people from the Sumy region, which sits across the border from Kursk.

CNN —Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers. Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. Neither the Ukrainian military nor the government in Kyiv has publicly commented on the operation. A Russian military blogger Rybar reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border.

On Tuesday, Kyiv took badly needed resources and fresh troops and launched them well inside Russia. Ukrainian military says it attacked Russian airfield, oil depots

Ukraine's military said on Saturday it had attacked Russia's Morozovsk airfield and a number of oil depots and fuel storage facilities in three Russian regions overnight. The attack on the airfield hit an ammunition depot where Russian forces stored guided aerial bombs among other equipment, the military said. The attack on oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Belgorod, Kursk and Rostov regions set fire to at least two oil tanks, according to the Ukrainian military report. The regional governor of Belgorod also said Ukraine-launched drones caused a fire at an oil storage depot there, adding that the fire was extinguished and no one was injured. Ukraine has dramatically stepped up its use of long-range drones this year to attack Russian oil facilities, attempting to damage sites fueling Russian forces and the country's economy in Moscow's 29-month-old invasion.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia has launched one of the largest drone attacks on Ukraine since the war began, mainly targeting overnight the region in and around the capital Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian military, which said all 89 drones fired were shot down. Dramatic video released by the Ukrainian Air Force shows one drone on fire, falling from the sky and landing in a field — causing a large cloud of smoke but no visible damage. “Just like then, today the Ukrainian air defense has withstood and repelled a massive attack by enemy drones,” he said. Since then, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded for allies to provide more air defense systems. We need sufficiently courageous decisions from our partners — enough air defense systems, enough range,” Zelensky added.
