"We're not going to focus on Donald Trump's legal problems," Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond told ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" program. At the same time, investigators acknowledged that it's possible not all of the remains of victims from the August 8th fire on Maui will ever be found. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden named former federal prosecutor and Chicago lawyer Ed Siskel as his top White House lawyer on Tuesday, saying the former White House deputy counsel would start his new post next month. Siskel served in the White House Counsel's office for nearly four years when Biden was vice president under former President Barack Obama, including as deputy counsel, the White House said in a statement. "For nearly four years in the White House when I was vice president, he helped the Counsel’s Office navigate complex challenges and advance the president’s agenda on behalf of the American people," Biden wrote. He previously was a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois and was a clerk for then-Justice John Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court, the White House said. Siskel replaces Stuart Delery, who is stepping down after serving as White House counsel since July 2022.

"It’s going to be an emotional day for everyone," White House spokesperson Olivia Dalton told reporters on Air Force One. Biden, who is seeking reelection in 2024, has been criticized by some Republicans and others for his initial response to the Maui fires. Biden said on Aug. 10 he would expand federal aid to Hawaii and promised help to anyone who needed it. Biden himself said he did not want to travel to Maui until he was assured he would not interfere with emergency response efforts.

They plan to placard Milwaukee with advertisements listing Biden's "record of accomplishments," while a billboard truck will circle the debate venue. Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond and Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Jaime Harrison will hold a press conference before the debate. Biden's low-key re-election campaign has so far largely avoided public rallies and events, with Biden focusing largely on fundraising and the presidency. A slow start to an incumbent's presidential re-election campaign is not unusual: Barack Obama held his first official rally for the 2012 election in May of that year. Biden won the state by less than a percentage point in 2020; Trump won Wisconsin by a similar margin in 2016.

The three-day online poll, which asked Americans if they approve or disapprove of the way Biden is handling his job, matched the July reading of 40%. The economy, unemployment and jobs remained Americans' top concern with a fifth of respondents citing that as the most important problem facing the U.S. today. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll last week found that worries about the economy could cost Biden support in the 2024 election, when he faces a likely rematch with Republican former President Donald Trump. The latest poll's approval rating for Biden of 40% was just four points higher than the 36% lows he hit in mid-2022. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, Aug. 4-6 and collected responses from 1,032 adults, using a nationally representative sample.

Before the pandemic hit in 2020, corporate travel was the travel industry's cash cow. Investors in travel companies are concerned that the spending from vacationers cannot make up the shortfall. For months, Alaska Air's (ALK.N) business bookings have been 25% below pre-pandemic levels. JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) said on Tuesday it will redeploy capacity away from New York to high-margin leisure destinations with business travel demand 20% below pre-pandemic levels. Recent passenger screening and fare data shows U.S. travel demand has peaked, hurting the carriers' pricing power.

Fitch downgrades Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac after US rating cut

A man walks through a plaza at the new Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington, U.S., October 4, 2022. REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueAug 2 (Reuters) - Ratings agency Fitch on Wednesday downgraded U.S. mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) and senior unsecured debt ratings to 'AA+' from 'AAA' after the U.S. rating downgrade on Tuesday. The agency said the cut was a result of Tuesday's downgrade and was "not being driven by fundamental credit, capital or liquidity deterioration at firms". "The downgrade to the ratings of Fannie and Freddie was a certainty after Fitch's downgrade of the US rating since the two ratings are linked," said Gennadiy Goldberg, Head of US Rates Strategy at TD Securities. The move to cut U.S ratings on Tuesday drew an angry response from the White House and surprised investors, coming despite the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis two months ago.

That offsets the doldrums in investment banking, where revenues have been depressed by rising interest rates and economic uncertainty.
