The new nine-month Supreme Court term officially starts Monday, with the justices appearing in the courtroom to hear oral arguments. Major cases at the Supreme Court: U.S. v. Skrmetti — Challenge to state laws that ban gender-affirming care for trans teenagers. When the Supreme Court decided Bush v. Gore, its reputation took a hit but quickly rebounded. Republicans challenged those changes, but the Supreme Court never took up a case about the issue at the time. The Supreme Court has relatively few cases of consequence on the argument calendar so far.

A judge on Tuesday granted a civil protective order to Olivia Nuzzi, the political writer sidelined due to her ties to fringe presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., after she accused her ex-fiancé of harassing and blackmailing her. New York Magazine’s Washington correspondent was put on leave last month after admitting to a “personal relationship” with Kennedy during his short-lived White House run. Magistrate Judge Robert Hildum granted Nuzzi’s request that Lizza not have contact with her and stay at least 100 yards away until an Oct. 15 hearing. Nuzzi asked for the protective order on Monday, accusing Lizza of seeking to ruin her reputation following their broken relationship. Here are key lines from the debate, which was hosted by CBS News in New York City on Tuesday. Vance said many of the things Trump says, but he did it with a control that Trump lacks. The only answer is during the four years that Donald Trump was president. We have a historic immigration crisis because Kamala Harris started and said that she wanted to undo all of Donald Trump’s border policies. We could come together and solve this if we didn’t let Donald Trump continue to make it an issue.

Hurricane Helene has caused significant disruptions for election officials in North Carolina and across the Southeast, scrambling preparations for early and mail voting that have been in the works for months. North Carolina officials mailed 190,000 ballots last week, some of which may be delayed or destroyed by flooding. Early in-person voting is scheduled to begin Oct. 17 across more than 400 locations in North Carolina. North Carolina is among the core battleground states former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are competing in this fall. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s attempt to appear on New York’s general election ballot. Kennedy, who has dropped his own presidential campaign and endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump, is fighting to appear on ballots in certain states over Democratic opposition. Kennedy’s lawyers said a state court was wrong in concluding that he could not appear on the ballot because of a dispute over his place of residence. Kennedy lives in California but had included a New York address as his residence when circulating a petition to appear on the ballot. After losing in state court, Kennedy filed an emergency application in federal court, but lost at both the district court and appeals court levels before turning to the Supreme Court.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appear on New York’s presidential ballot even though he suspended his campaign last month and backed former President Donald Trump. The high court turned away Kennedy’s longshot appeal without comment and there were no noted dissents. I want you to vote for Donald J. Trump,” Kennedy said. It’s the second presidential ballot access appeal to reach the Supreme Court in recent weeks, underscoring the spoiler role third party and independent candidates can play in tight elections. On Friday, the Supreme Court denied an emergency request from the Green Party to ensure presidential candidate Jill Stein could appear on the ballot in the battleground state of Nevada.

Three EPA whistleblowers told ProPublica on Thursday that their complaints were the subject of the reports (which redact employee names). After endorsing Trump, Kennedy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the U.S. could “revisit pesticide and other chemical-use standards” if Trump wins. “The EPA was sort of paralyzed under the Trump administration,” she said. It’s not yet clear what Kennedy’s role might be in a potential Trump administration, or which decisions he’d help to make as part of the transition team. Even with Kennedy’s ties to Trump, Gartner said she would expect the EPA under a second Trump administration to act similarly to the first one.

An Idaho man has been charged with threatening to kill Donald Trump in phone calls made to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to court documents. Warren Jones Crazybull, 64, of Sandpoint, made at least nine threatening phone calls to Trump’s home on July 31, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit that was first reported Monday by Forbes. Mar-a-Lago security told the Secret Service that eight additional phone calls making threats were received from the same number, the court documents said. "There have been two heinous assassination attempts on President Trump, and their violent rhetoric are directly to blame." The Secret Service determined his location using T-Mobile phone data, which located him in Montana, according to the filing.

After you put out your story and New York magazine put out a statement, Nuzzi put out her own statement, which might change the way people perceive the story. CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

Third-party candidates have played a big role in deciding key presidential battleground states in the last few years — meaning which (and how many) candidates will actually be on the ballot state by state could matter a lot in a close election. After spending millions to get on state ballots, Kennedy has attempted to pull back since endorsing former President Donald Trump. And there are still other third-party candidates, including some familiar faces and some new ones, whose presence on key state ballots could affect the November results. In 2016, 6% of all voters cast votes for third-party candidates, a dynamic that helped to lower the share of the vote Trump needed to win in key battleground states. But this is where third-party candidates’ battleground ballot access efforts stand at the moment.

CNN —The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed on Monday it is investigating Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for allegedly decapitating a dead whale carcass and transporting it home two decades ago. A spokesperson for NOAA confirmed to CNN on Monday that Kennedy is under investigation for the incident. “It is long standing NOAA practice not to comment on open investigations,” the spokesperson said. In the interview, Kennedy’s daughter recalls her father using a chainsaw to cut off the head of a dead whale carcass on the beach near their Cape Cod family home and driving the whale’s head back to New York. Following the story gaining attention on social media, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund called for NOAA to investigate Kennedy over the incident, arguing his actions could have jeopardized scientific research.

Iowa shifted from being a swing state to one where Republicans are firmly in the driver's seat. In Iowa, the gender gap is as pronounced as it is in many swing states. The Iowa poll found that six percent of voters still back Kennedy, a decrease from June but still a number that could cause headaches.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday he is being investigated for collecting a whale specimen. Kennedy said that he responded in a letter, baselessly linking the National Marine Fisheries Service with whale deaths and calling for the agency to investigate. Kennedy did not go into details about the whale incident, but his daughter had previously described a situation involving a whale that took place 30 years ago. Kennedy endorsed Trump in August and has since been on the campaign trail urging supporters to back the former president. The campaign said Harris plans to do more interviews with local media in battleground states and speak more with her traveling press corps in the coming days. Her campaign’s media strategy has largely been a continuation of Biden’s, which is to minimize interactions with the media. Some allies said that Harris should use the momentum from the debate to change her cadence of interviews. “I don’t think you can hide for 56 more days from media interviews,” said one Democratic strategist, requesting anonymity to speak candidly. The Harris campaign also held a call that day, but it was off the record.
