For months now, inflation has been steadily trending down to a 3% level after hitting 9% last summer. That will likely bring the annual rate to 3.6%. The Fed actually pays attention to a less well-known inflation metric and tends to focus on core inflation minus housing and those numbers are improving. We look for the monthly pace of core inflation to rebound to 0.2%-0.3% in Q4 and keep the annual rate closer to 4% than 3% through year end. The annual rate of headline CPI is also likely to remain stuck just above 3% through the end of 2023.

S&P 500 E-Mini futures rose 0.5% and Nasdaq E-Mini futures climbed 0.9%, suggesting Wall Street is likely to open with gains on Thursday. Investors this week had anticipated Nvidia's results report as a potential spark to reignite gains in a sluggish U.S. stock market. Nvidia's forecast added to investor optimism. Big Tech and AI-related stocks saw their stock market values increase by over $70 billion, on top of Nvidia's increased value, as their shares climbed following the report. Nvidia forecast third-quarter revenue of about $16 billion, plus or minus 2%.

Support measures appear piecemeal, the latest include a move to extend trading hours to jolt a battered stock market. But if there’s one thing that authorities cannot let slide, it is the weakening currency. Slowing economic growth also has forced the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to cut interest rates against Western counterparts’ aggressive rate hikes. Policymakers also could increase offshore issuance of yuan bills in Hong Kong, and there’s always the option of introducing more stringent capital controls. The central bank will "resolutely" prevent excessive movement in the yuan, the report said.

The People's Bank of China lowered its one-year lending rate by only 10 basis points to 3.45% - less than the 15bp cut forecast - and it left five-year rates unchanged. UBS became the latest global bank to slash China's annual economic growth forecast for this year - down to 4.8% from 5.2%. Ten-year Treasury yields hovered below last week's highs on Monday, however, and Wall St stock futures were firmer ahead of the open.
