CNN —Second gentleman Doug Emhoff tested positive for Covid-19 Saturday after experiencing mild symptoms, according to a Sunday statement from his office. Vice President Kamala Harris has tested negative for the virus and remains asymptomatic, Emhoff communications director Liza Acevedo said in the statement. The couple were on a balcony at the White House with President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden on Thursday for an Independence Day celebration. CNN has reached out to the White House to ask whether the president is being tested. Emhoff previously tested positive for Covid-19 in March 2022, and Harris tested positive a month later but had no symptoms.

Even so, four sources close to the Biden family said there is no active effort to shake up staffing right now. Hunter Biden's appearance in White House meetings this week was just one instance of what is expected to be the deeper Biden family involvement. From the view of some Biden aides, the family is seizing on an opportunity to try to settle old scores. President Joe Biden's family is attempting to become more involved over his campaign and White House affairs as their anger with his staff spills into public view. Hunter Biden's stepped-up involvement has confounded some White House staff members and revived a longtime sore spot.

CNN —There will be no last hurrah for Andy Murray at Wimbledon after his playing partner and fellow Briton, Emma Raducanu, withdrew from the mixed doubles event. “I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care,” the 21-year-old Raducanu said in a statement. It means that 37-year-old Murray has played his last match at Wimbledon after announcing earlier this year he will retire from tennis this season. Murray has become a legend at Wimbledon ever since making his debut at the tournament as a teenager in 2005. Murray made his first Wimbledon singles final in 2012 where he lost to Roger Federer – a defeat which moved the British star to tears and somewhat changed the public’s perception of him.

Since his disastrous debate performance last week, Biden has tried to reassure Democratic governors, House Democrats, staffers, voters, and donors that he is fit for reelection. But Biden is losing support among some Democratic donors, some of whom have publicly called on him to step aside. Despite mounting pressure to exit the race, Biden told staffers he was "not leaving" during a Wednesday call with his campaign and Democratic National Convention staff, Politico reported, citing anonymous staffers on the call.

CNN —Amid the ongoing fallout from Joe Biden’s debate performance, talk in many top Democratic circles has already moved to who Kamala Harris’ running mate would be. A more open race, these top Democrats hope, would be for Harris’ running mate, with a focus on leading Democratic governors. “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November,” he said. The anti-Trump coalition cannot afford to discount the strengths of the nominated Democratic running mate and current vice president. Harris’ answer: She’d turn around and say to him, “Why are you being so weird?”As vice president, Harris has tended to be known more for her word salads than sharp elbows like that.

AdvertisementKitty Donaldson, a political journalist in the UK, told Business Insider that this interview marked a turning point in Starmer's public display of emotion. Obama could advise Starmer on how to deal with TrumpObama's and Starmer's relationship is likely to continue if Starmer wins the election on Thursday. Speaking to Politico's Power Play Podcast in September, Starmer said Obama was the US president that he spoke to "most frequently." Packer said Obama and Starmer's relationship made sense, given the decadeslong ties between the UK's Labour Party and the US Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Donaldson suggested Starmer may seek advice from Obama on dealing with Donald Trump, if the former president is reelected in November.

Keir Starmer is all but certain to become the next prime minister of Britain, after an exit poll projected that his Labour Party would win the general election in a landslide on Thursday. That would mean Mr. Starmer would replace Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who took office less than two years ago. Mr. Starmer, a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer, has led a remarkable turnaround for the Labour Party, which just a few years ago suffered its worst election defeat since the 1930s. He has pulled the party to the political center while capitalizing on the failings of three Conservative prime ministers. “He’s not going to set hearts racing, but he does look relatively prime-ministerial.”

Fast-moving flames engulfed several homes and vehicles in Northern California as 26,000 people evacuated their homes this week, according to a local official, fleeing a wildfire that burned through a region scarred by previous blazes. The official, Mayor David Pittman of Oroville, said emergency shelters in the region had filled up by Wednesday afternoon as the fire continued to spread. Oroville, where many of the residents were told to evacuate, is the seat of Butte County, about 20 miles south of Paradise, where 85 people were killed and nearly the entire town was destroyed six years ago in one of the worst wildfires in American history. California’s firefighting agency, Cal Fire, said that the wildfire began on Tuesday morning, and that its cause was under investigation. It was not clear how many structures had been damaged by the blaze, called the Thompson fire.

Which has me thinking back to one of the viral moments from her husband’s 2020 campaign. On the night of Super Tuesday, as Joe Biden was delivering his celebratory speech at a rally in Los Angeles, two anti-dairy demonstrators rushed the stage, only to run smack up against the protective wall of Dr. Biden. There is an amazing photo of her grimacing and holding a protester at bay by the wrists as Mr. Biden looks on with concern. That is who Dr. Biden is, fiercely and reflexively, when it comes to protecting and supporting her husband. And those looking to recruit her to encourage Mr. Biden to reconsider his presidential bid may sorely misunderstand her — and their marriage.

President Biden should do the same,” Doggett said in his statement Tuesday. “There’s a large and increasing group of House Democrats concerned about the president’s candidacy, representing a broad swath of the caucus,” another House Democratic lawmaker told CNN on condition of anonymity to speak candidly. They have held off going to Biden directly, hoping he would make the decision himself, but patience is wearing thin, multiple Democrats told CNN, amid signs that Biden has taken no steps to seriously consider the mounting concerns. Jill Biden — the president's wife of 47 years — responded to criticism of her husband's age at a Manhatten fundraiser on Friday, saying the 81-year-old is "not a young man." "When he gets knocked down, Joe gets back up, and that's what we're doing today," Jill said, according to The Washington Post. Jill Biden has always publicly supported the president. However, she added that Jill and the wider Biden camp's unwavering support could be more harmful than helpful. She said this mindset extends to the Democratic party, adding that many will automatically support Biden because of a "genuine fear" that the party doesn't stand a chance with a replacement nominee.

In the aftermath of Thursday’s presidential debate, as Jill Biden led President Biden off the stage, former Senator Claire McCaskill, the Missouri Democrat, raised what she called a “hard and heartbreaking” question. “You have to ask,’’ she said on MSNBC, “how did we get here?”Barely seven weeks before Democrats gather in Chicago to formally nominate Mr. Biden for a second term, the Democratic Party is in crisis. Many party leaders, donors, activists and ordinary voters, stunned by the president’s faltering debate appearance, now fear he will lose to former President Donald J. Trump and drag Democrats to devastating defeats in congressional and state elections. Mr. Biden is surrounded by a tight circle of longtime aides and family members who have encouraged his desire to seek a second term. But interviews with top party strategists, office holders and people close to Democrats seen as possible presidential hopefuls suggest that, just as crucially, party leaders were lulled into complacency or pressed to step in line at crucial moments when they might have persuaded Mr. Biden to step aside.

CNN —First lady Dr. Jill Biden is Vogue’s August cover star just as election season is kicking off in earnest in the United States — and only days after President Joe Biden’s shaky first debate performance rattled the Democratic party. On the cover — her second for the fashion magazine — Dr. Biden appears in a cream-colored Ralph Lauren silk tuxedo dress, lensed by the veteran fashion photographer Norman Jean Roy. Vogue, too, reached out to the first lady following the debate amid calls for the president to step down as the Democratic nominee. And, as she told Vogue, she’s seen the career-related frustrations of military spouses due to the often transient nature of their lives, so she has supported flexibility for remote work for some government jobs. “And this is where the magic happens.”“We don't need more chaos,” First Lady Biden told Vogue.

During much of President Biden’s term, the first lady was a figure of minimal controversy. That began to shift when campaign season heated up. Laura Ingraham of Fox News claimed that Dr. Biden was covering up the president’s unfitness out of her own desire for political power and prestige. Afterward, The New York Times reported that Dr. Biden was the first person he had turned to: “The first lady’s message to him was clear: They’d been counted out before, she was all in, and he — they — would stay in the race.”On the Vogue cover, Dr. Biden wears a white Ralph Lauren tuxedo dress. The accompanying profile of the first lady, by Maya Singer, describes her as a “vision of calm amid utter cacophony.”

CNN —Joe Biden’s family on Sunday encouraged the president to stay in the 2024 race and privately discussed whether top aides should be fired on the heels of Biden’s stunningly poor debate performance, which has thrown his campaign into turmoil. Biden’s family, including first lady Jill Biden, son Hunter Biden and their grandchildren, convened at Camp David for a previously scheduled get-together and implored the president to keep fighting in his bid for reelection, Biden advisers told CNN. Biden, however, is known for being loyal to and protective of his close advisers, and does not like to fire aides. The admiration and support that Biden’s family showed the president Sunday mirrored the first lady’s effusive public praise for her husband in recent days. The opinion of Biden’s family would be crucial in determining his political future – even more so than the president’s famously insular inner circle of top advisers.

President Biden knew immediately after stepping off the stage in Atlanta on Thursday night that the debate had gone wrong. In those first stricken moments after a raspy, rambling and at times incoherent performance, he turned to his wife, Jill Biden. “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence,” Mr. Trump said when Mr. Biden blundered an answer on immigration. They acknowledge her unique influence and power in his life, but they say Mr. Biden is in control of his own campaign. But as long as Mr. Biden wants to run, advisers say, she will support him.

There were discussions with political advisers about arcane rules under which Mr. Biden might be removed from the ticket against his will and replaced at or before the Democratic National Convention, according to a person familiar with the effort. In Silicon Valley, a group of megadonors, including Ron Conway and Laurene Powell Jobs, were calling, texting and emailing one another about a situation they described as a possible catastrophe. The donors wondered about whom in the Biden fold they could contact to reach Jill Biden, the first lady, who in turn could persuade her husband not to run, according to a person familiar with the conversations. A Silicon Valley donor who had planned to host an intimate fund-raiser featuring Mr. Biden this summer decided not to go through with the gathering because of the debate, according to a person told directly by the prospective host. Another major California donor left a debate watch party early and emailed a friend with the subject line: “Utter disaster,” according to a copy of the email.

Biden must step aside, the argument will go, because he’s going to lose the election and only a different Democrat can save the country from Trumpian misrule. This is a necessary argument for its intended audiences: Americans who fear Trump above all else and a Democratic Party motivated by partisan self-interest. It is definitely true that if you believe America needs to be saved from Trumpism 2.0, continuing with Biden is a grave dereliction. But it’s also important, especially for those of us who are not Democratic partisans, to emphasize that declining to nominate Biden is essential not just if you hope to avert a second Trump term. It’s essential if you want to protect the country from a second Biden term — from the ways that his obvious deterioration endangers the country that he nominally leads.
