Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. But at the joint hearing of the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, Rowe also highlighted the missteps of local law enforcement on July 13, when the former president was shot. Moving forward, Rowe told the committees, his agency will avoid assuming local law enforcement agencies are fully capable of fulfilling their role in protecting an event. Rowe told the lawmakers that local law enforcement was positioned in a nearby building and should have had a clear line of sight of Crooks on the roof. Tobra claimed that the account in question was “pro-Biden.”The Gab account has also not been conclusively connected to Crooks.

CNN —Donald Trump has agreed to sit for a victim interview with the FBI, which is investigating this month’s attempted assassination, an agency official said Monday. “The interview of the former president will be consistent with any other victim interview that we do,” Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh Field Office, told reporters on a conference call Monday. The FBI wants to “get his perspective on what he observed, just like any other witness to the crime.”“It is a standard victim interview, like we would do for any other victim of crime under any other circumstances,” Rojek said. Crooks was “highly intelligent” and had a growing interest in shooting, Rojek said. CNN —After Vice President Kamala Harris accused former President Donald Trump of “backpedaling” on a debate, the Trump campaign said Thursday it would not commit to any future debates until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee. “I have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,” Harris told reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews Thursday. Trump told reporters earlier this week he wants to debate Harris but has not yet agreed to anything. Before Biden withdrew from the race, Harris had positioned herself to go up against Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, on the debate stage. “I was told I was going to get to debate Kamala Harris, and now President Trump’s going to get to debate her?” Vance joked.

Charlotte, North Carolina CNN —Donald Trump will step out onto the campaign trail Wednesday to an entirely new race and a political landscape once again irrevocably altered by an unprecedented election year. Meanwhile, Trump and his campaign are working to reimagine a playbook and operation launched to take on an unpopular 81-year-old incumbent. He predicted that Harris would start “gaining on or even leading President Trump” in the polls, though he also insisted that the “honeymoon” period would end. Trump’s appearance in Charlotte will provide his first opportunity to contrast himself with Harris before voters in a battleground state. But it was left off the list of states that the Biden campaign viewed as most winnable in a sobering post-debate assessment of the race.

According to the FBI’s analysis of Thomas Matthew Crooks’ laptop, Crooks searched how far Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot and killed President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The search was on July 6, the same day the Trump rally was announced. “That’s a search that’s obviously significant in terms of his state of mind,” the FBI director added. The drone was in the air for approximately 11 minutes, and investigators believe Crooks watched a live feed from the drone on his phone. The FBI is investigating the shooting as both an attempted assassination and as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

CNN —The Trump campaign on Tuesday filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission arguing money raised for President Joe Biden’s reelection bid cannot be transferred to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. But, he added, “that doesn’t mean it can’t get tied up in FEC proceedings for years.”An FEC spokesperson declined to comment, citing the agency’s policy on not discussing enforcement matters. “If President Biden is committed to passing the torch to his vice president, and wants to be able to seed her campaign with the current Biden for President campaign war chest, he’ll first have to become his party’s legal nominee,” Spies wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal before Biden’s exit from the race. And Federal Election Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum, a Democrat viewed as a swing vote on the evenly divided commission, has said Harris could access what Biden raised through the campaign committee because it is registered for both the president and vice president. Lindenbaum wrote on X, “If Kamala Harris becomes the Democratic Party nominee, she gets access to the Joe Biden campaign funds.”This story has been updated with additional reporting.

CNN —A local law enforcement commissioner revealed during a House Homeland Security hearing on Tuesday stunning new details about the security failures that led to the near assassination of Donald Trump, raising more questions for the embattled US Secret Service. Paris told lawmakers about the communications between the Secret Service and local law enforcement who initially spotted Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin. “That is my understanding,” Paris said, adding that the officers went searching with other local officers in the area. State Police then received a call and a text from the ESU about Crooks’ activity that they immediately relayed to Secret Service. Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.

After a lot of back-and-forth, he finally agreed, but during the meeting told me how important it was to him to take his employees out to lunch. If he asks you why, simply tell him you want to keep things strictly professional and avoid more casual interactions. And ask him to give you professional feedback in writing, at which point you can suggest a one-on-one meeting. I’m resentful that it’s an issue yet again and don’t particularly want to have another conversation.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s security detail had complained they were not being given enough resources and personnel by the Secret Service over the past two years, and the agency acknowledged Saturday it denied some requests. A spokesperson for the Secret Service said in a statement Saturday that the agency has not provided certain resources in the past but has instead provided other security measures including from local partners. The Washington Post and The New York Times reported earlier Saturday that the Secret Service denied previous request from Trump’s security team over the past two years. In response to questions from CNN over whether the Secret Service had denied additional security requests, a spokesperson told CNN the agency makes “modifications” when certain resources are not provided to protectees. “In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, wrote in a statement.
