Mr. Dintzer said that the Justice Department case was “built on documents that capture exactly” what Google did. The opening statement offered clues to how the Justice Department will paint the relationship between Google and Apple. Mr. Dintzer said that Google was insistent that it would not share revenue with Apple without “default placement” on its devices. Later, Mr. Dintzer said, Google worked to make sure that Apple couldn’t redirect searches to its Siri assistant product. “They turned history off, your honor, so they could rewrite it here in this courtroom,” Mr. Dintzer said.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday showed real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.4% in the second quarter, slightly beating forecasts of 0.3%. The world's 12th largest economy got a boost from net exports, with the return of students and tourists, and public investment. "For all its challenges, the Aussie economy remains remarkably resilient," said Harry Murphy Cruise, an economist at Moody's Analytics. Government consumption will also moderate from its elevated levels, and business investment will ease on the back of squeezed profits." Household consumption, which used to be the engine of growth, remained subdued with just a 0.1% gain in the quarter due to spending on essential goods and services.

Excerpts from recent editorials in the United States and abroad:Aug. 31The Washington Post on sexism in the U.S. militaryNearly eight years ago, the United States opened up all military combat roles to women, clearing a pathway for female service members to join the most elite military forces. Women at multiple military bases reported that other soldiers would bang on their doors in the middle of the night. Even a program that once represented the highest ideals of the United States — its compassion, its expertise and its resources — is becoming a casualty of the country’s most destructive and divisive forces. You can conduct immediate electronic transfers between your brokerage account and savings account, and manage both savings and investment activities on a single platform. Rate hike odds build as Fed's Powell gets set to speak

Aug 25 (Reuters) - As investors wait anxiously for any hint of guidance on the interest rate outlook from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday, they have been increasingly positioning for the central bank to deliver another interest rate hike by year end. Powell is set to deliver the keynote speech on Friday morning at the annual economic symposium hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Fed has jacked up its policy rate from near zero in March 2022 to the current range of 5.25% to 5.50%, but unemployment remains at a historically low 3.5% and overall economic growth has defied expectations that it would falter. Alongside the rise in bond yields, rate futures have notably repriced as well. Reporting By Dan Burns; Editing by Chizu NomiyamaOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

As Xi Jinping has entrenched his hold on power in China, he has likened himself to a physician, eradicating the toxins of corruption and disloyalty that threaten the rule of the Communist Party. Slowing Australia Q2 inflation lessens rate hike pressure

In the first quarter, inflation was at 1.4%. That was balanced by a sharp fall in goods inflation, which slowed to an annual rate of 5.8% from 7.6% the quarter before. Adelaide Timbrell, senior economist at ANZ, said both headline and trimmed mean inflation are tracking below the RBA's forecast for the second quarter. "(The data) highlight that a 4.1% cash rate may be restrictive enough to bring inflation down. The RBA has warned that some further tightening may be required to bring inflation to heel.

With her short hair and wide eyes, the Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who has died at the age of 56, cast a powerful silhouette onstage during her music career. The height of her power came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including a divisive 1992 appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in which she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II to protest sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. O’Connor told Rolling Stone in 1991 that her record company, Ensign, wanted her to wear high-heel boots and tight jeans and grow her hair out. “I decided that they were so pathetic,” she said, “that I shaved my head.”

Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at the central bank's building in Sydney, Australia on May 2, 2022. Australia's central bank decided to keep interest rates steady this month as policy was clearly restrictive and there was a risk a squeeze on household finances could lead to a sharp downturn and higher unemployment. Minutes of the July 4 policy meeting out on Tuesday showed the Reserve Bank of Australia's, or RBA, board considered raising the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.35%, before deciding on a pause, acknowledging that both set of arguments were strong. The stance of monetary policy was already restrictive and is set to tighten further given the significant resets of low-fixed rate loans ahead. Mortgage interest payments were already at a record share of household disposable income in May.
