Walmart focuses India’s retail valuation debate
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MUMBAI, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Walmart (WMT.N) is bumping up its stake in Flipkart, India’s e-commerce giant, at a handsome valuation. The U.S. retailer is buying shares from Tiger Global for $1.4 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s a good deal for the seller as investors assess India’s hottest retail businesses. Reliance Industries’ (RELI.NS) retail unit might come sooner; analysts peg its valuation anywhere between $57 billion and $131 billion. How the market finally values India’s consumer will be closely watched.

Experts say the richest are actually even richer and spending more than they were before the pandemic. Most Americans now have "spent up" demand for goods, but still have pent up demand for services, Zandi says. In her experience, luxury spending is highly correlated with the stock market, and investors have enjoyed handsome returns so far this year as the S&P 500 rebounds from its 2022 lows. The luxury services sector was a particular hot spot. "If this is a richcession, the rich are probably saying, bring it on," Zandi said.

An ex-Gitmo detainee said Ron DeSantis smiled at him as he was being force-fed, per The Daily Beast. The remarks come from an unaired documentary transcript detailing DeSantis' time as a Navy lawyer. Ron DeSantis smiled at him from behind a fence while watching him get force-fed, per the Daily Beast. This stands in stark contrast to a 2018 CBS interview, during which DeSantis told a reporter that JAG legal advisers told Guantanamo Bay commanders that people "can force-feed" and laid out the "kind of the rules for that." Spectre of far-right hangs over close-run polls
  + stars: | 2023-07-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
MADRID, July 23 (Reuters) - Spain heads to the polls on Sunday in a potentially close-run general election marked by ideological differences, the spectre of the far-right and irritation at being forced to vote during the summer holidays. Voting opens at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) and closes at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), when exit polls will be released. The final result is expected to be decided by fewer than a million votes and less than 10 seats in the 350-seat parliament, experts say. It has warned such rights could be stripped back if the anti-feminist, family values-focused Vox is part of the next government. The formation of a new government depends on complex negotiations that could take weeks or months and may even end in fresh elections.

Tony Bennett, Always a Class Act
  + stars: | 2023-07-21 | by ( Jim Windolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like his singing voice, Tony Bennett’s personal style was supple, straightforward and sure of itself. He resisted the temptation to change his approach to music when rock overtook the pop charts, and he largely stayed away from many sartorial trends that came and went during his seven decades in show business, wisely sticking with tuxedos and smartly tailored suits, many of them from the Italian fashion brand Brioni. For more casual moments, he went with slacks and a blazer, sometimes with a handsome dark turtleneck in place of a button-down shirt and tie. Paradoxically enough, by sticking with the style that allowed him to feel most himself when it came to both music and fashion, Mr. Bennett managed to avoid the trap of becoming associated too strongly with any one era. In recent decades, when men’s fashion magazines celebrated the ring-a-ding-ding style of the 1950s and early 1960s in backward-looking fashion spreads, they tended to focus on Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other dyed-in-the-wool members of the Rat Pack.

SINGAPORE, July 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Singapore could turn a governance crisis into an opportunity. Its transport minister S. Iswaran and Ong Beng Seng, the property billionaire credited with bringing Formula One to the city, were arrested and released on bail last week. It's been six days since Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong revealed the investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau and the exact details remain unclear. S. In 1973, a young man named Uri Geller appeared on one of the BBC’s most popular television shows, “The Dimbleby Talk-In,” and announced that the laws of Newtonian physics did not apply to him. A handsome 26-year-old Israeli, dressed casually and flanked by a pair of academics, Mr. Geller performed a series of bewildering feats using nothing more, he said, than his mind. Then he appeared to bend a fork simply by staring at it. Because at the core of his performance was a claim of boggling audacity: that these were not tricks. ◆ ◆ ◆Written and narrated by Andy Kifer

For those who remember the 2019 Shakespeare in the Park production of “Much Ado About Nothing” — as I do, fondly — the sight that awaits them at this summer’s “Hamlet” in the same location is disturbing. The flagpole bearing the Stars and Stripes sticks out of the ground at a precipitous angle, like a javelin that made a bad landing. For the director Kenny Leon and the scenic designer Beowulf Boritt, both returning for this “Hamlet” — the Public Theater’s fifth in the park since 1964 and 13th overall — it’s a coup de théâtre, if an odd one. An approach that had been designed to welcome audiences to a new way of looking at Shakespeare in 2019 now seems destined to exclude them. But this “Hamlet” has been placed in a frame that doesn’t match what the production actually delivers, leaving me glad to have seen it but wishing for something more congruent.

Unless, that is, you recognize this opening as a summary of “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel about the innocence of the mountebank and his martyrdom at the hands of the wealthy married couple he tries to come between. This reversal is part of what makes “Gatsby” such an essential American text. In “Gatsby,” money is clearly corrupting once you have it, because the having imbues you with the “vast carelessness” of Tom and Daisy Buchanan or the cold-eyed manipulative spirit of the men who use Gatsby as their front. “If he’d of lived he’d of been a great man,” Gatsby’s father says before the funeral. But in dying young, Gatsby achieved the secret goal of all Americans: to get rich while remaining citizens of Eden, innocents till the last.

Then Donald Trump won the presidential election, and I felt that maybe in that moment there was work to do elsewhere. With its clever, large-format headlines and populist sensibility, HuffPost had the feel of a left-of-center tabloid, like The New York Daily News in its heyday. In a way, this plan represented a very old model of paying for quality journalism, one that began in 1833, when a young businessman named Benjamin Day had an idea. The handsome profits they reaped enabled investments in high-quality journalism, including high-risk and expensive endeavors such as investigative reporting and international coverage. Local news cratered, and even titans like The New York Times faced existential threats.
