Here's a rapid-fire update on every stock in the CNBC Investing Club portfolio. But importantly, the chipmaker has joined Apple in rarified air, becoming an "own it, don't trade it" stock for the Club. The company's business can withstand an economic slowdown and benefits from a weaker U.S. dollar because of its large international presence. Work from home has in part jacked up food prices, and the increase is about 14% above just last year. The only bank that looks like Silicon Valley Bank is First Republic Bank (FRC) because it, too, has suffered huge deposit withdrawals. Nike (NKE)said China orders were good, so did Club stock Starbucks (SBUX). As counterintuitive as it is, the banking row will give the 4.8% fed funds rate a chance to cool consumer spending. This gives stocks a window to advance until we begin earnings season with what will no doubt be a cautious banking sector.
The Club has taken a restrained approach to the oversold stock market in recent days, making only one purchase after an assertive buying spree the week prior. This was the case even though our trusted S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator has continued to signal an oversold market, which often suggests stocks may be poised for a bounce. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite traded up as much as 1.8% and 2.5%, respectively, before retreating in the afternoon. The market being in oversold territory isn't the only requirement for the Club to put money to work in a stock we like. A week ago, we bought 130 shares, at $30.15 each , following Halliburton's roughly 13% decline over just a few days.
I think the industrial uses, the medical uses, the auto uses, the educational uses and the call center uses are front and center here. Multiple price target boosts for this Club stock. Fed Action Could Have Prevented SVB’s Collapse
  + stars: | 2023-03-18 | by ( Hal Scott | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The Silicon Valley Bank crisis appears to demonstrate the danger of the Federal Reserve not properly performing one of its central functions: acting as a lender of last resort during a run. Thanks to the fall-off from venture-capital firms—its principal clientele—the bank was attracting less deposit funding. And it was maintaining a portfolio of long-dated Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities matched against short-term deposits. From a credit-risk perspective, SVB was much less risky than a standard bank making loans. Its issue was interest-rate risk: After a year’s worth of rate hikes, the losses on SVB’s portfolios couldn’t be offset by decreasing the value of deposits.
We're buying 50 shares of Emerson Electric (EMR) at roughly $80.54 and 130 shares of Halliburton (HAL) at roughly $30.20. In essence, the Oscillator measures the buying or selling pressure in the market at the current point in time. EMR YTD mountain Emerson Electric (EMR) YTD performance Emerson's stock decline has made its valuation favorable too. HAL YTD mountain Halliburton (HAL) YTD performance We understand the narrative, but the industry is still catching up from years of underinvestment and if producers want to be capital efficient, then they need to use Halliburton's technology. With HAL shares down about 28% since we sold 375 shares in mid-January, we are upgrading our rating back to a 1.
The Club followed through on what Jim Cramer laid out last Sunday, using this week's volatility to opportunistically buy on market pullbacks. In fits and starts, bank stocks were under pressure all week. With so many trades, eight stocks in all, here's a recap for Club members that further explains how our broader view of the market influences our buying decisions. We see EMR's market decline after the takeover news as overblown and view the stock's valuation as more attractive following a steeper decline Friday. The extent of the decline in West Texas Intermediate crude — down 5.5% to under $67 per barrel — seems overdone in an energy market that remains structurally undersupplied. Bad for energy stocks For now, we're holding onto our three oil exploration and production (E & P) stocks — Coterra Energy (CTRA), Devon Energy (DVN) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) — because their breakeven levels are around $40 per barrel. The big question is whether the federal government will make good on its signals to replenish the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) at WTI prices below $70 per barrel. In turn, higher energy costs eat into discretionary spending budgets. Now, with energy costs coming down, we would expect these input costs to subside a bit.
How GSK plans to replenish its depleted medicine cabinet

GSK has since suffered a series of clinical trial setbacks in its cancer drugs portfolio, most recently last year involving ovarian cancer drug Zejula and blood cancer drug Blenrep. BLOCKBUSTER POTENTIALAnalysts say that despite a string of strong quarterly earnings, lingering concerns over the company's drug pipeline reflect in GSK's share price. The investor said he does not see enough GSK drugs, either on the market or in development, with potential to be a so-called "blockbusters" with annual sales exceeding $1 billion. But Wood said the overhauled R&D department has put GSK in a strong position to meet growth targets. U.S. regulatory approval on GSK's vaccine, and a rival vaccine developed by Pfizer, is expected in May.
The S & P 500 climbed roughly 1% in afternoon Tuesday trading, clawing back only some of its 3.4% decline between Thursday and Monday's close. We spent Monday morning looking for things to buy in what our trusted S & P Oscillator signaled was an oversold market. In the three sessions Thursday through Monday, both stocks underperformed the S & P 500 as they fell 5.4% and 4.4%, respectively. Palo Alto didn't get either nod, but we think it's only a matter of time before its added to the index. While S & P 500 constituency wasn't in the cards this time, we will continue to add to our position into weakness.
Fourth-quarter earnings season is in the rearview mirror and most Club stocks reported results ahead of, or in line with, analysts' forecasts. Moreover, excluding foreign exchange fluctuations, this marked the ninth quarter in a row of 20% or better annual earnings growth. Nvidia (NVDA) reported a very strong quarter and better-than-expected guidance for the current quarter . Eli Lilly 's (LLY) fourth-quarter results came up a bit short on revenue but delivered a strong bottom line. Despite missing on top-line expectations, Wells Fargo 's (WFC) earnings came in better-than-expected, as the bank realized the benefits of higher interest rates .
Wells Fargo (WFC) and Halliburton (HAL) headline a group of five dividend-paying Club stocks that are expected to post robust earnings growth this year. We wanted to see which holdings are projected to boost per-share earnings this year well above the roughly 2% earnings growth estimated for the overall S & P 500 . Investors should also pay attention to valuation, so we excluded stocks trading above the S & P 500's multiple of 18 times forward earnings. Wells Fargo Estimated 2023 EPS growth: 50.7% Dividend yield: 2.7% Forward P/E: 9.4 WFC 1Y mountain Wells Fargo's stock price over the past 12 months. The average price target from analysts who cover Morgan Stanley is about 6% above the stock's closing price of $96.06 on Tuesday.
Barclays raises price target on Zillow (Z) to $30 per share from $24 but keeps underweight (sell) rating. Industrial gas and engineering giant Linde (LIN) gets another price target boost: UBS goes to $410 per share from $375. Here's an update on our energy, industrials and materials names in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use at the CNBC Investing Club. In 2022, by contrast, the priority was its variable dividend, which changed quarter by quarter depending on its financial results. The industrial company is one of our more recently added holdings. He also mentioned that Halliburton's top boss, Jeff Miller, has expressed notable conviction that the company's stock price is too cheap. The alternative would be consolidating our holdings to two oil-and-gas producers, along with Halliburton as our third energy stock.

When Warren Buffett speaks, Wall Street listens — and the "Oracle of Omaha" issued a full-throated defense of stock buybacks in his latest annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. After spending more than $1.2 billion on stock buybacks in 2022, Coterra's board approved a $2 billion buyback authorization last week. Costco: In January, the wholesale retailer's board reauthorized a $4 billion stock repurchase program , which is set to expire in four years. It's part of a $10 billion buyback authorization issued by Salesforce's board last August. As the chart makes clear, the vast majority of Club holdings engage in some level of stock repurchases, which is good news for shareholders.

He said in Malaysia there had been a "slight setback" amid stiff competition with a Korean rival. BENGALURU, Feb 13 (Reuters) - India wants to more than triple annual defence exports to $5 billion by 2024/25 from $1.5 billion currently as it looks to ramp up domestic manufacturing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday while inaugurating the Aero India show. "Today, India is not just a market for defence companies, it is also a potential defence partner," Modi said in his speech at the show. "I call on India's private sector to invest more and more in the country's defence sector." India, for decades one of the world's biggest importers of defence equipment, now exports to 75 countries, he added. India's airlines are also expanding, with Tata Group's Air India expected to announce a potentially record deal to buy nearly 500 jets from Airbus and Boeing, worth more than $100 billion at list prices.
Triumph Financial is a "new fintech leader in payments" that the market is underappreciating, according to Loop Capital. The firm initiated coverage of Triumph with a buy rating and a price target of $76 per share. This, along with its emerging open loop payment platform, TriumphPay, makes the company unique, according to Goetsch. TriumphPay connects brokers, factoring companies, and carriers in the trucking industry to facilitate payments. To be sure, Goetsch believes the company will not become profitable until 2024, as freight demand slows in 2023.
Burt Bacharach, legendary composer of pop songs, dies at 94
  + stars: | 2023-02-09 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +10 min
Bacharach was both an innovator and throwback, and his career seemed to run parallel to the rock era. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, a prize-winning Broadway composer for "Promises, Promises" and a three-time Oscar winner. Fellow songwriter Sammy Cahn liked to joke that the smiling, wavy-haired Bacharach was the first composer he ever knew who didn't look like a dentist. Bacharach was essentially a pop composer, but his songs became hits for country artists (Marty Robbins), rhythm and blues performers (Chuck Jackson), soul (Franklin, Luther Vandross) and synth-pop (Naked Eyes). He's everybody's composer ... Burt Bacharach!"

Bacharach and David had 30 Top-40 hits in the '60s alone. I'd hear his melodies and I'd hear lyrics. I'd hear rhymes, I'd hear thoughts and I'd hear it almost immediately." Bacharach and David scored the Neil Simon Broadway musical "Promises, Promises," which won them two Tonys and a Grammy. While star performers made his songs hits, Bacharach said he also enjoyed performing himself and making a personal connection with smaller audiences.
