In a direct challenge to federal power over immigration, the Texas House on Thursday approved the creation of a state-level crime for entering the country from Mexico between ports of entry, allowing local police agencies to arrest and jail unauthorized migrants or order them back to Mexico. The Texas House also approved an additional $1.5 billion for the state to use to construct its own barriers near the international boundary. In some states, higher-income families can now use taxpayer money to cover private school tuition -- and more people than projected are taking the offer, which might force scrambles to shore up state budgets. McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Biden administration announced they waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to allow border wall construction on Wednesday, marking the administration’s first use of a sweeping executive power employed often during the Trump presidency. The Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Endangered Species Act were some of the federal laws waived by DHS to make way for construction that will use funds from a congressional appropriation in 2019 for border wall construction. Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said it will start south of the Falcon Dam and go past Salineño, Texas. “A border wall is a 14th century solution to a 21st century problem. Supporters of the laws have argued that social media platforms have engaged in impermissible censorship and have silenced conservative voices in particular. In signing the bill in 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said, "There is a dangerous movement by some social media companies to silence conservative ideas and values. The Texas law forbids social media companies with at least 50 million monthly active users from acting to "censor" users based on "viewpoint," and allows either users or the Texas attorney general to sue to enforce it. The industry groups are appealing a decision by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholding the Texas law, which the Supreme Court had blocked at an earlier stage of the case.

Biden continues to struggle with voters over his handling of immigration at the US-Mexico border. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that 62% disapproved of his efforts on the issue. Biden's relationship with NYC Mayor Eric Adams has noticeably cooled as the city struggles to house migrants. In a newly released Washington Post-ABC News poll, only 23% of registered voters approved of Biden's handling of immigration at the southern border, compared to 62% of respondents who disapproved.
