But in recent years, DNA analysis has helped scientists uncover the tale behind the "vampire's" remains. An annotated image shows the placement of the "Connecticut vampire" skull and bones in the grave. The "Connecticut vampire" likely died of tuberculosisFor decades, the "Connecticut vampire" was known only as "JB55," after the initial "JB" that had been carved into the brass tacks used to close the coffin. A 3D-scan of Barber's skull was combined with DNA analysis to estimate John Barber's features, shown here in an artist's illustration. Not everybody agrees, however, that this burial site qualifies as a bona fide "vampire" burial site.

On Friday, Russia returns to lunar exploration with its first expected moon landing since 1976. But one village in Russia's Far East, which could be hit by falling rocket debris, is being evacuated. The village falls within the potential impact zone of the launch, making the evacuation necessary, he added. After a hiatus of nearly 50 years, Russia will launch its first lunar landing spacecraft on Friday. Scientists believe the south pole of the moon contains a lot of water ice, which astronauts could potentially mine for rocket fuel.

If you’re the type of person, as I am, who likes to try new restaurants as much as possible, keeping up can be tough. “How do you keep up with all these restaurants?” is a question I get a lot from my fellow dining enthusiasts. My list has all the restaurants that I want to visit, organized by borough with descriptions of what they serve. I tick off restaurants as I try them, to great satisfaction. Location, location, locationI know a lot of professional and amateur diners who love to use the Saved feature on Google Maps.

Overture is aiming to establish a baseline for maps data so that companies can use it to build and operate their own maps. For many companies, Google 's and Apple 's maps aren't ideal, because they don't provide access to the underlying data. For example, app makers pay per thousand Google Maps lookups through an application programming interface (API). Apple allows access to Apple Maps for free for native app developers, but web app developers need to pay. Overture is only offering the underlying map data, leaving it up to companies to build their own software on top of it.

People have just discovered that Apple Maps has a loyal fanbase, and is actually quite good. But die-hard Google Maps users won't stop reminding them of how bad the app was at its 2012 launch. Earlier this week The Wall Street Journal published one of the most divisive articles you can imagine: a deep-dive into Apple Maps – and the people who love them. It's hard to compete with a product as beloved as Google Maps, which literally helped open up our world. The app was so bad that Tim Cook had to apologize and encourage people to use Google Maps instead.

A clip of rising water flowing into a small bay is circulating with the false claim that it shows tsunami water in Alaska after the state was hit with an earthquake in mid-July. Another clip circulating online shows a similar horizon, with wooden cabins being swept away and is also falsely linked to the 2023 Alaska earthquake (here). The same scene was uploaded by the Kalaallit Nunaata Radio (KNR), the national broadcasting organization of Greenland, in June 2017 (bit.ly/40ILeBs). Reuters previously addressed another clip shared online showing the same June 2017 tsunami in Greenland that was falsely attributed to the February Turkey-Syria earthquake (here). The clips pre-date the July 2023 Alaska earthquake and were attributed to a tsunami caused by a 2017 landslide in western Greenland.

Some users told the Journal they prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps for its design and usability. Rabinowitz mow finds that Apple Maps offers public transit directions that are faster and more creative than those from Google Maps, the Journal reported. Apple Maps, he said, also takes into consideration commuting disruptions like subway outages better than its competitor does. She has since begun choosing it over from Google Maps, as she says Apple Maps has a more clear and legible display. Google Maps, he said, might be better for those who want to use their personal data to inform what information gets displayed.

New York CNN —Google is working to fix false contact information for some major airlines on Google Maps after a Twitter user found a phone number actually connected callers to scammers. Phone numbers appeared to be altered on Google Maps listings for multiple airlines’ locations at John F Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York. Impacted airlines included Delta, American, Southwest and Qantas, the user claimed in a widely viewed post. The Twitter user detailed his experience trying to contact Delta after a canceled flight left him googling for a help line to rebook. Impacted businesses like airlines are able to flag concerns to both Google and law enforcement over suspected scammers.

When the Museum of Modern Art began collecting video games a decade ago, curators boldly asserted that games were an artistic medium. The MoMA exhibition “Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design,” which runs through Sunday, represents the museum’s cautious advance into the gaming world at a time when digital culture has overtaken its galleries. However, the museum could do more to break the firewall between art lovers and game designers. Curators need to unleash that same passion for games, which struggle in the current exhibition to convey the profundity, and complexity, of their designers’ thinking. On the first floor, old computer monitors cantilevered above visitors are drawn from the museum’s collection of video games.
