Here is a fact check of seven of the claims Trump has made about the investigation since the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago resort and residence in August 2022. The Presidential Records Act says that, the moment a president leaves office, NARA gets custody and control of all presidential records from his administration. Bush all took millions of documents; he repeated the claim that Obama took documents at the CNN town hall in May. In Trump’s case, the presidential documents found in haphazard amateur storage at Mar-a-Lago, including documents marked classified, were in Trump’s possession despite numerous attempts by both NARA and the Justice Department to get them back. The claim that Biden has been “totally uncooperative” with the investigation into his handling of official documents is transparently false.

This reflects history, which shows that while being vice president often correlates with success in future presidential ambitions, it is far from a guarantee. Think about recent vice presidents who have tried to upgrade their positions. That doesn’t seem like a particularly high success rate, though we should remember that many vice presidents (like Cheney) don’t run. About 55% of vice presidents who ran for their party’s nomination became the head of their party’s ticket. The last time it happened was 1940, when President Franklin Roosevelt crushed his vice president, John Nance Garner.

A vice president makes countless public appearances that will be mostly ignored unless something humiliating happens — something that serves to make him or her look like the hapless lightweight who symbolizes an entire administration’s ineptitude. Bush’s young vice president, Dan Quayle, is remembered for misspelling “potato” on camera. Biden’s time in the office actually helped burnish a goofy charm; he was seen not just as folksy or avuncular but, in some corners, paradoxically cool. This is the woman seen, in some clips, singing “Wheels on the Bus” at a campaign vehicle and then cackling with laughter, or gushing about Venn diagrams. Colorado Republicans are reckoning with an increasingly Democratic tint of the Western state. Republicans lost the Colorado Springs mayoralty this week, a stunning blow for the state party. Independent candidate Yemi Mobolade easily defeated former Colorado Republican Secretary of State Wayne W. Williams in a May 16 runoff election for the mayoralty of Colorado Springs, a longtime conservative stronghold. "I think it's literally demographics are the hugest reason why Colorado is shifting more blue. The people moving into our state are by and large more liberal, and the people leaving our state are by and large, more conservative," former state Republican chair Kristi Burton Brown recently told The Hill.
Will The U.S. Economy Pull Off a ‘Soft Landing’? The soft, the hard and the grayThere isn’t any standard definition of an economic soft landing. But what’s an acceptable inflation rate? On the other side, policymakers used to believe that an unemployment rate below 4 percent was basically unattainable without runaway inflation. Unless we have a really, really hard landing, the overall story of the postpandemic economy will be one of remarkable resilience.
Fact-checking Trump’s CNN town hall in New Hampshire

CNN —CNN hosted a town hall with 2024 Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump on Wednesday night in New Hampshire. 2020 ElectionJust minutes after the town hall began, Trump claimed the 2020 election was “rigged.”Facts First: This is Trump’s regular lie. Trump claimed Wednesday that he got gas prices down to $1.87 – and “even lower” – but they increased to $7, $8 or even $9 under Biden. The Presidential Records Act says that the moment a president leaves office, the National Archives and Records Administration gets legal custody and control of all presidential records from his administration. First, there’s no provision for negotiating over Presidential records at the end of a term.
WASHINGTON — President Biden is expected to announce soon that he has chosen Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., the Air Force chief of staff, to become the country’s most senior military officer, according to two U.S. officials. General Brown would be only the second Black man to become chairman, following Colin L. Powell, who served in that position during the presidencies of George H.W. General Brown’s appointment and confirmation would also mean that along with Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, the top two Pentagon leadership positions would be inhabited by African American men for the first time in American history. It would be a singular step for minorities in a military whose leadership has long been dominated by white men.
May 2 (Reuters) - A lawyer for a Florida prosecutor on Tuesday urged a federal appeals court to reinstate his client after the state's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, indefinitely suspended him over his pledge not to prosecute people seeking or providing abortions. "This governor punishes dissenting voices," David A. O'Neil, a lawyer for suspended prosecutor Andrew Warren, told a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Henry Whitaker, a lawyer in the Florida Attorney General's office representing DeSantis, said Warren was suspended for his conduct of refusing to enforce the law, not for his speech. Whitaker urged the court to uphold a January ruling in favor of DeSantis by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle. Warren, who won re-election in 2020 as the Hillsborough County state attorney, sued DeSantis last August.

I asked Fair if it was fair to say that polarization of voters has weakened the predictive value of economic indicators. He acknowledged that Trump, an especially polarizing figure, had underperformed in both 2016 and 2020 given economic conditions that the Fair model considered favorable to him. But he said he’s not convinced that his economic model has lost its predictive power. A good example of why it’s dangerous to over-rely on economic models is what happened in the spring of 2020, when Covid hit. Fair is sticking to forecasting the popular vote because he thinks it’s of academic interest.
Why Joe Biden Decided to Run Again

Photo Illustration: Ryan TrefesWASHINGTON—By the time Ronald Reagan turned 80, he was a former president, watching the end of the Cold War unfold from his home in California. At the same age, Jimmy Carter was deep into his postpresidential work promoting democracy around the globe, while George H.W. Bush was months away from seeing his son win a second term as president. Now 80, President Biden is embarking on a path with no precedent in American political history, as he is running for a second term. He is driven to stay in one of the world’s most challenging jobs at a moment when many Americans are years into their retirement—and as polls show majorities of voters, including many Democrats, don’t believe he should run again.
That’s why I dismiss predictions — fashionable, even at some of these networks — that cable news is doomed to irrelevancy. Mr. Carlson’s reach made him an unelected leader of the Republican Party, someone the House majority leader, Kevin McCarthy, had to propitiate. An entire ecosystem of far-right sites and social networks eagerly waited to promote Mr. Carlson’s episodes each night. Bush, has called Mr. Murdoch’s machine the “Fox brainwashing operation” rather than Fox News. Lemon called it the “Fox propaganda network” because he didn’t think it was accurate to call it news anymore.
Tucker Carlson would be a real threat to Trump if he were to run in 2024, says ex GOP strategist Rick Wilson. He'd instantly have an online fundraising juggernaut second only to Trump, and perhaps surpassing him," Wilson, who served as a strategist for former President George H.W. Wilson is now a staunch Trump critic and one of the cofounders of The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump super PAC. Even Trump's GOP would never vote for a former TV host pushing white replacement theory.' Trump and Carlson text each other often and are the closest they've ever been, The New York Times reported this week.
"I never saw myself as a speaker, let alone a motivational speaker," Leonard tells me while his assistant irons his jeans. 'When I ramble," Hunter told me, "hit me in the leg!" Every plane had been grounded, including the one stuck on the tarmac with an increasingly inebriated Hunter Thompson trapped inside. But by far the most all-consuming task was booking gigs for Hunter Thompson. Just before a debate with G. Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.
CNN —President Joe Biden was the toast of Ireland last week, as he was treated to a hero’s welcome in a pageant-laden return to his ancestral home. Biden, who is expected to formalize his plans next week, has a significant body of achievements on which to run. So is the absence of a real primary challenge simply the luck of the Irish? Perhaps with that primary battle in mind, Biden has worked assiduously to court the progressive wing of the party, from which such Democratic primary challenges generally arise. Finally, there is former President Donald Trump, whose candidacy is a boost to Biden among Democrats.
Florida Gov. "DeSanctus is being absolutely destroyed by Disney," Trump wrote earlier this week. "DeSanctus is being absolutely destroyed by Disney," Trump crowed on his social media platform Truth earlier this week. The Florida governor wanted to burnish his national image by torching Disney. And by gobbling up intellectual property and broadcasting rights, Disney continues to be virtually inescapable.
When they say opposites attract, they might well be talking about wealthy Texas couple John Thrash and his wife, Becca Cason Thrash. While Mr. Thrash, a green energy entrepreneur and architecture wonk, sometimes hides from the spotlight, his wife admits she courts it shamelessly. In some ways, their elaborate Texas home, slated to come up for auction next month with a guide price of $19.5 million, is the physical manifestation of those differences. When Mr. Thrash, 68, built the home in the late 1990s, he was inspired by his love of the work of both Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. He envisioned doing some entertaining, but he didn’t count on the property becoming Houston’s party central.
F/A-18E/F Super Hornets have mostly replaced F/A-18 Hornets as the US Navy's carrier-based fighters. The Super Hornet — which includes the single-seat F/A-18E and the two-seat F/A-18F — made its maiden flight in 1995. Super Hornet availability is now about 41% compared to about 26% for the Hornet, whose readiness dropped sharply at about the 25-year mark. But the CBO asked a more specific question: How did Hornets compare to Super Hornets at a similar age? Was the discrepancy caused by Super Hornets flying more hours than Hornets?
The news outlet said the frequency of the gifts have "no known precedent in the modern history of the U.S. Supreme Court." Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "This cries out for the kind of independent investigation that the Supreme Court — and only the Supreme Court, across the entire government — refuses to perform," Whitehouse said on Twitter. The ProPublica report is the latest revelation to prompt ethics concerns about Thomas. Thomas's failure to report the trips provided by Crow appears to violate a federal law requiring justices, judges and other federal officials disclose most gifts, ProPublica reported, citing legal ethics experts.
WASHINGTON, March 31 (Reuters) - The United States has decided to extend the deployment of the George H.W. Bush carrier strike group to provide options to policymakers after last week's deadly attacks in Syria by Iran-backed forces, U.S. military officials said on Friday. Buccino also noted a scheduled, expedited deployment of a squadron of A-10 attack aircraft to the region. One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Bush strike group was expected to remain in the European Command area of responsibility. President Joe Biden warned Iran last week that the United States would act forcefully to protect Americans.
President Joe Biden will keep with tradition and feature a blue and white Air Force One fleet. The news comes years after former President Donald Trump proposed that the colors change. Trump's changes would have resulted in additional heat on significant plane parts, the Air Force said. Air Force One, the plane of the president of the United States, is seen during takeoff, June 1968. Every Air Force One plane since has kept with tradition and featured a blue and white design.
“This is a major life decision that should involve the parents,” Circuit Judge Paul Niemeyer said as the panel heard arguments in the case before it makes a decision. Steven Fitschen, the group's president, said in an email that he anticipates filing more lawsuits challenging school policies barring the disclosure of students' gender identity. At least 168 U.S. school districts with more than 3.2 million students have such policies, according to conservative group Parents Defending Education. Parents have filed lawsuits challenging similar policies adopted by school districts in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Virginia and Iowa, among other states. Quattlebaum and Circuit Judge Allison Rushing, who rounded out the panel, are appointees of Republican former President Donald Trump.
