CNN —The European Parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of legally binding targets to protect and restore nature in the European Union, despite strong opposition from some policymakers. The flagship EU nature law will also require countries to introduce measures to restore nature on a fifth of their land and sea by 2030. It is the first major piece of legislation to protect biodiversity in the EU in the last 30 years, according to Greenpeace. Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg reacts as she attends a voting session on EU nature restoration law during a plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Yet “Welfare,” which shared the opening honors in Avignon with a dance production, Bintou Dembélé’s “G.R.O.O.V.E.,” looks as absurd onstage as it is affecting on-screen. It’s as if the sitcom “That 70s Show” had opted to tackle welfare benefits, complete with well-cut, visibly new costumes. The stories told in Wiseman’s film are loosely reorganized here into a day in the life of a welfare center, as case workers deal with one exasperated claimant after the next. There are comedic moments in the film, but in Deliquet’s stage version, they start to feel involuntarily farcical. The energetic delivery of the cast may be because they need to project in the cavernous space, which holds around 2,000 spectators.

Private payrolls increased more than expected in June, the ADP National Employment report showed, indicating the labor market remained strong despite growing risks of a recession from higher interest rates. Another survey showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased moderately last week. "The Fed has been hopeful to see a modest deterioration in the labor market," said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives for Charles Schwab. "But since the ADP number was almost twice of what was expected, it generally implies there's potential for more rate hikes going forward." The adtech company held panel sessions and meetings at the "MediaMath Penthouse." But behind the scenes, MediaMath CEO Neil Nguyen had barely been sleeping, according to three people familiar with the matter. "We collectively believed as a company, board, and advisors that we had a deal in hand," the statement continued. When advertisers or agencies buy ads through a platform like MediaMath, the adtech company must pay publishers immediately for their ad space. But the adtech company must wait — often 90 days or more — to be paid by the advertiser or agency.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

Douglass wondered what the enslaved might say if they were called from the plantations to reflect on themes of liberty, justice and equality. How might their words differ from the prose of the free orators normally asked to comment on American ideals? On Independence Day, what would those who lost loved ones in the Buffalo mass shooting have to say about justice in America? What musings about liberty could we expect from those who endure unjust sentencing or are pulled over for driving while Black? The rise of political nepo babies

Second, if you are a nepo baby in your first term, you will continue to be counted as a nepo baby in each subsequent term. Thus, Pelosi has been counted as a nepo baby each year since she was first elected in 1987. It's possible that this trend is the result of the Democratic party electing more nepo baby incumbents like Pelosi. Thus, it's not surprising that the Democratic Party does not just have more incumbent nepo babies but also more first-time nepo babies. On top of that, we continue to see that independent of party the Senate elects more nepo babies than the House.

Each of us was asked to introduce a film that meant something highly personal to us and to dedicate it to someone special in our lives. She sensed in that serendipitous moment that her father was still with her, and it sustained her. I chose the 1958 Oscar-winning musical “Gigi” and dedicated it to my wife. Here, it is worth taking a brief tour of the history of birthright citizenship in the United States. Although the idea of birthright citizenship was present in English common law at the time of the adoption of the Constitution, the Constitution as ratified said nothing about acquiring citizenship by either birth or naturalization. To the extent that citizenship came with rights, the scope of those rights was a question of state laws and state constitutions. But there were always proponents of a broader, more expansive and rights-bearing birthright citizenship. “Our common country is the United States,” Delany wrote.

The anise-flavored liquor is one of the oldest spirits in the world. He noted that it’s still common for Middle Eastern restaurants to stock European wines rather than traditional spirits like arak. He was experimenting to refine the production of al-kohl, a traditional form of eyeliner, according to Arak Muaddi, a Palestinian craft distillery. Nader Muaddi, the founder of Arak Muaddi, explained that producing arak starts with creating wine. The Middle East has “a very rich history of making wine and spirits, and it’s about time that we share it with the world,” Muaddi went on.

US and Canadian coast guard crews scoured the ocean’s surface and used sonar to listen for sounds far below the water. Wednesday, June 21: A ‘search-and-rescue mission, 100%’Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area, according to the US Coast Guard. It was unclear whether the noises heard Tuesday night and Wednesday morning were from the missing submersible, according to Frederick.

The search area for the missing submersible stretches about two times the size of Connecticut on the surface and goes down as deep as two-and-a-half miles, according to Frederick. We need a miracle – but miracles do happen,” oceanographer and water search expert David Gallo told CNN. However, it remains unclear whether the noises are from the missing submersible, Frederick said. David Marquet, a former submarine captain, described Wednesday what he imagines the five passengers are experiencing in the Titan submersible. OceanGate Expeditions strayed from industry norms by declining a voluntary, rigorous safety review of the vessel, according to an industry leader.

The minivan-sized submersible Titan, operated by U.S.-based OceanGate Expeditions, began its descent at 8 a.m. (1200 GMT) on Sunday. The Titan set off with 96 hours of air, according to the company, meaning its oxygen tanks would likely be depleted some time on Thursday morning. "When you're in the middle of a search-and-rescue case, you always have hope," Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick said at a press conference on Wednesday. Titanic expert Tim Maltin said it would be "almost impossible to effect a sub-to-sub rescue" on the seabed. The robot could also help hook the sub to a surface ship capable of lifting it, the operator said.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of the Civil War’s end and their newfound freedom. The Eight Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo organizers thought a lot about those questions. Jones-Dixon wants Black Portlanders to see a version of themselves in a rodeo that is fun but that also makes them proud. Frederick says there remains a notion among Black Portlanders that the flooding was a convenient excuse for displacing the city’s thriving Black enclave. Having the rodeo near Vanport is a way of saying that this is an event for you, for us.

Everyone Likes Reading. Why Are We So Afraid of It?

Among Douglass’s most powerful and painful revelations is that, on the subject of reading, his master was right. Substitute “reading” for “freedom” in that last sentence and the meaning stays the same. Reading liberates and torments us, enlightens and bewilders us, makes and unmakes our social and solitary selves. The methods of reading instruction associated with Columbia University’s Teachers College were in full bloom there. The rooms were furnished with well-stocked, low-slung bookshelves and carpeted risers where young readers could curl up with “just-right books,” selections matched to their interests and levels of proficiency.

The banging on Tuesday first came every 30 minutes and was heard again four hours later, according to an internal government memo update on the search. The search for the missing submersible Titan has broadened to an area about two times the size of Connecticut. It was unclear when exactly the banging was heard Tuesday or how long it lasted, based on the memo. We have to keep working until we find the submersible,” Joyce Murray, minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, told reporters Wednesday. If the submersible is intact, the passengers would be dealing with dwindling oxygen levels and fighting cold, he told CNN.

The OceanGate Expeditions submersible that went missing with five people aboard while trying to visit the site of the Titanic wreckage has only 41 hours or less of oxygen left, U.S. Coast Guard officials said Tuesday. Rescuers are searching an area of ocean that is "larger than the state of Connecticut" for the Titan submersible, Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick said at a news briefing Tuesday. The submersible went missing Sunday, less than two hours into its dive about 900 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, is on board the vessel. OceanGate began offering trips on the submersible, whose passengers pay $250,000 apiece, in 2021.

It marks the moment in June of 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free by executive decree. Though it commemorates a moment when enslaved African Americans were freed, the US is still held captive by several myths about slavery and people like Cummins. 1: African Americans were ‘freed’ after the Civil War endedThere is a popular conception that the formerly enslaved were freed after the Civil War ended. It is what historians call a “Slave Bible.” It is a copy of a Bible that was used by British missionaries to convert enslaved African Americans. That’s the only way to explain a possible 600 million pound ($748 million) price tag for the Britain’s Telegraph Media Group (TMG).
