He missed it when it became a World Golf Championship for only Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players. So what to make of this new PGA Tour model of signature events and $20 million purses with small fields and most of them not having cuts? "If all the players play in those and we get great fields playing for a lot of money, then it's great. And the PGA Tour has been about doing the best for everybody, for all the pros and members. “So I'm a little mixed on that.”That's what the PGA Tour is facing this year.

What little suspense is left in the year revolves around whether the S & P 500 can close at a historic high. Closing the year at a historic high is a fairly rare event — it's only happened eight times since 1926, and only four times since 1963, according to S & P Global: 2020, 2013, 1999, 1991, 1963, 1958, 1954, 1928. So far, the S & P is up 0.9% in these first four of the seven days. The S & P internals are almost the opposite of where they were a year ago. Andrew Kelly | ReutersAfter years of unbridled consumer spending on everything from home improvement to dream vacations, some companies are now finding the limits of their pricing power. Nike last week lowered its annual sales growth forecast and unveiled plans to cut costs by $2 billion over the next three years. "Goods companies don't have the pricing power they did in the pandemic, and some in the hotel and travel [industries] — they don't have the pricing power they did in the immediate post-Covid," he added. Sales growth for companies in the S&P 500 is on track to average 2.7% this year, according to mid-December analyst estimates posted by FactSet. Consumer spending on apparel and groceries rose 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively, from the year-earlier period, according to the survey.

A few days ago, S & P noted that the S & P 500 total return of 25.85% would only be up 9.49% ex the Magnificent 7. If you own the S & P 500 long-term, you are participating in those gains. The S & P is up 1,200 points (25%) since then and is knocking on the door of an historic high. The S & P 500 is overbought and expensive on most metrics. Then we'll review what I think will happen into year end and a possible market hedge idea. FedEx gave us a sense of how things are looking when they reported earnings Tuesday evening, and it wasn't good. We got all of them out of FedEx earnings, they hit a dinger, in a bad way, which disappointed the Street to say the least. Southwest Airlines and its pilots' union have reached a new preliminary labor agreement that would give pilots 50% cumulative pay increases over the life of the contract, a deal that could end years of tense negotiations. The five-year deal is worth about $12 billion, Casey Murray, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, told CNBC on Tuesday. In comparison, larger rival United Airlines ' new four-year pilot contract is worth about $10 billion, according to the aviators' union. Once the contract becomes amendable, Southwest pilots would get 2.5% annual bonuses until the airline and union reach a new agreement. FedEx pilots rejected an preliminary deal earlier this year, while UPS pilots' union is set to start negotiations in mid-2024.

FedEx shares fell 12% Wednesday morning after the package delivery giant cut its revenue forecast as weaker demand hit sales. The company said it expects a low-single-digit decline in revenue for the fiscal year, down from a previous forecast for flat sales year over year. Analysts had expected a revenue drop of less than 1% in the current fiscal year, according to LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv. The company's Express unit, its largest, was especially challenged in the quarter with lower demand, surcharges and customers shifting to cheaper services, FedEx said. Correction: Revenue was $22.17 billion versus $22.41 billion expected.

Concurrently, the FedEx crew aborted their landing. “Rollin now,” the Southwest crew replied, according to a transcript of the radio exchanges published by the NTSB. Campbell also told investigators that he was working an overtime shift.

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (0293.HK) is leaning towards placing an order for around six Airbus (AIR.PA) A350 freighters as the Hong Kong carrier renews the oldest section of its fleet of dedicated 747 cargo jets, industry sources said. Airbus and Boeing had no immediate comment. Industry sources have said the competition pointed to an initial purchase of around half a dozen aircraft, worth some $2 billion at list prices before traditional airline discounts. Cathay Pacific told analysts in August it was looking at freighters and "continuing to study various opportunities". On Friday, it told analysts cargo demand had softened but was "still much higher than pre-pandemic times".

A worker sorts products during Cyber Monday operations at the Amazon's fulfillment center in Robbinsville, New Jersey, U.S., November 27, 2023. In 2016, before its in-house logistics initiative took off, global shipping costs tallied about $16 billion, with customers covering about half. Last year, the total expense was about five times higher. Moreover, higher turnover means higher profit, especially from ancillary services such as advertising. And that’s before the generally lucrative holiday season, which should bring Amazon shareholders some more upbeat shipping news.

It gives us another reason to be confident in the firm's retail business as the holiday online shopping season gets off to a strong start this year. Postal Service remains the largest parcel service by volume, handling packages for its customers as well as all three delivery companies. "People shop every day on Amazon," Jim added. The company's speedy, same-day delivery service is a huge value proposition of the Prime membership — made possible, in part, by Amazon's push to become the U.S. package delivery company in the U.S. The Amazon Prime logo is displayed on the side of an Amazon delivery truck in Richmond, California, June 21, 2023.

The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. Mandating a financial penalty if a contract is broken, as in Vidal’s case, has a long history in contract law, but it is relatively new in employment contracts. A typical stay-or-pay clause is called a training-repayment-agreement provision (TRAP), which stipulates that the cost of on-the-job training will be borne by the employee. Nevertheless, Harris says, it’s hard to know how many workers are subject to these contracts, because employment contracts are often private. While index funds are ultimately what catapulted him to financial independence in the first place, he wouldn't necessarily go that route if he had to start from scratch today. "I'm still very pro low-cost index funds for almost everyone," he said. Lower returns mean index funds won't grow as much, and investors potentially have to save and contribute more to hit their goals.
