In 2022, Maury McIntyre, president and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which puts on the Emmy Awards, was looking for a chief of staff. Initially, he thought someone who'd worked in a similar role before would be the right fit. Curry had been teaching choreography at private schools and though her background wasn't quite what McIntyre had been looking for, she had "the most kick-ass cover letter I've ever read." The Television Academy hired her soon thereafter and she's been working there ever since. Here's what convinced McIntyre to bring Curry in for an interview and his advice to other job seekers out there.

In the days before the Palestine Writes festival, Magill was not just facing pressure from Lauder, Wolf and others who wanted the event scrapped. CNN —Actress Julia Ormond is suing disgraced former film producer Harvey Weinstein for battery and sexual assault she says occurred in 1995, according to a copy of the complaint obtained by CNN. Ormond is also suing the once Weinstein-owned Miramax as well the Walt Disney Company, which purchased Miramax in 1993, for negligence and Hollywood talent agency CAA (Creative Artists Agency), who represented the actress, for negligence and breach of fiduciary trust. CNN —Republicans are enraged that their safe space was punctured at the second GOP debate by a Univision anchor. After welcoming viewers in Spanish (the debate was simulcast on Univision), Calderón queried the Republicans through the night on weighty issues related to immigration, hate crimes, health care, and more. But unlike what is typical on Fox News, Calderón declined to frame her questions in a manner favorable for the Republican candidates. “The Univision anchor’s questions seem to come from the comments section of Salon and Vox,” talk radio host Buck Sexton said. “I think the Univision lady thinks she’s at a Democratic Debate,” Fox News commenter Tomi Lahren added.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Union leaders and Hollywood studios reached a tentative agreement Sunday to end a historic screenwriters strike after nearly five months, though no deal is yet in the works for striking actors. The Writers Guild of America announced the deal in a joint statement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the group that represents studios, streaming services and production companies in negotiations. “WGA has reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP,” the guild said in an email to members. The tentative deal to end the last writers strike, in 2008, was approved by more than 90% of members. In that walkout, the writers strike started first and ended second.

School is back in session for the sweet, sometimes absurd British comedy “Sex Education,” which leans heavily into its streaming-series freedom to portray adolescent sex for what it generally is: awkward, mediocre, part of life. Expect close-ups of patchy pubic hair, belly rolls and many (many) penises — among other physical realities of sex that don’t typically appear in teen stories. Unlike other raunchy teen dramas, like the provocative “Skins” and “Euphoria,” “Sex Education” takes a normalizing, endearingly un-edgy and even occasionally musical approach to the birds and the bees (though the writers would probably choose a more clinical term). In the fourth and final season, now streaming on Netflix, Otis must navigate a new school alongside his effervescent best friend, Eric (Ncuti Gatwa). After the closure of Moordale Secondary School at the end of Season 3, they now face a social hurdle more daunting than trying to become popular: survival as the new kids.

Here's a look at what's happening, and what may happen, with the awards that have been thrown off course. Because they are still tied to the traditional fall-through-spring broadcast television season, the Emmys have been among the few awards shows held in September. The January date will put the Emmys within the rest of Hollywood's awards season, when red carpets rule and performers are on the promotional prowl. It would also throw the Oscars, and the entire awards season, into doubt. ___For more on the actors and writers strikes, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/hollywood-strikes/

The event will join the Golden Globes, the AFI Awards, the Grammys and the Oscars, among others, in a two-month stretch. The Emmys ceremony, now scheduled for Martin Luther King’s Birthday, is a day after the Critics Choice Awards and a week before Oscar nominations are scheduled to be announced. Series eligible for the coming Emmy Awards had to premiere between June 2022 and May 2023. Nominations were announced last month, and the perennial Emmy heavyweight HBO again dominated the other networks and streamers. Emmy voting will begin as normal next week, with the results being held under lock and key for many months.
