President Biden is locked in a tight race with former President Donald J. Trump in Pennsylvania, a state that Mr. Biden barely won in 2020 and that is critical to his re-election hopes, and in Virginia, a state where Mr. Biden defeated Mr. Trump by 10 percentage points in 2020, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College polls. The polls, which were completed before the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump while he was campaigning in Pennsylvania on Saturday, found that Mr. Trump was leading the president by 48 percent to 45 percent among likely voters in Pennsylvania. The results are almost unchanged from a New York Times/Siena College poll taken in May and within the margin of error. By almost any Electoral College map calculation, it would be nearly impossible for Mr. Biden to win re-election without Pennsylvania. In that state, Mr. Biden has a lead of 3 percentage points over Mr. Trump among likely voters, which is within the margin of error.

If you average the national polls since the debate 15 days ago, Trump’s ahead by 3 points. An NPR/PBS News/Marist College poll out Friday morning even put the race at 50% for Biden to 48% for Trump (a result within the margin of error). Biden was ahead by 9 points in the early July national polls in 2020. I think it’s totally fair to say that Trump is the favorite and that Biden has his work cut out for him. There is also data to suggest that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a stronger Democratic nominee against Trump than Biden.

CNN —A truism of American politics is that older voters prefer the Republican and younger voters prefer the Democrat. In 2012, Republican Mitt Romney lost the election, but he did better than Democrat Barack Obama among voters 45 and older. Older voters are gravitating to Biden, and younger voters are taking a look at Trump. But older voters have gone in the opposite direction, and instead of favoring Trump, are nearly split in the Marist poll. Despite the shift of older voters in the direction of Biden (and younger voters away from him), I was surprised to see older voters still have reservations about Biden’s age.

CNN —With less than two weeks until the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, CNN has released additional details on the parameters agreed upon by the Trump and Biden campaigns. Both candidates agreed to appear at a uniform podium, and their podium positions will be determined by a coin flip. In order to meet CNN’s qualifications for the debate, candidates must satisfy the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution to serve as president. Both Biden and Trump meet those requirements, as do Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West and Jill Stein, who are running on non-major-party tickets. Though not impossible in Kennedy’s case, it is less likely that candidates other than Biden and Trump will meet those requirements.

That’s better than any third-party or independent candidate has polled in an individual survey at this stage in the cycle since Ross Perot in 1996.
