Chinese leader Xi Jinping said on New Year's Eve that the nation's economy had grown "more resilient and dynamic this year." Meanwhile, famed hedge fund manager and founder of Dallas-based Hayman Capital Kyle Bass said the country's heavily indebted property market has triggered a wave of defaults among public developers. That's a problem, given China's real estate market can account for as much as a fifth of the nation's GDP. "This is just like the U.S. financial crisis on steroids," Bass said, referring to China's default-ridden property market. The Institute of International Finance said Beijing has the policy capacity to push China's economy toward its growth potential and stuck to its above consensus forecast for 2024 growth at 5%, in a recent blog post.

The new “Lisa Frankenstein,” by Zelda Williams in her directorial debut, hits some of the same notes. I cried the day my son was accepted into a public school pre-k program. After four years of dreading his monthly Montessori school tuition, it felt like we had finally summited Mt. There I was, an alternative weekly editor, and my husband, a young high school teacher. Thus, the waterworks the day we learned our 4-year-old had been accepted to a public school via the Montessori lottery. During last spring’s banking crisis, when a competing lender went under, New York Community Bank pounced, acquiring a big chunk of its business. The pain stems largely from a weakening commercial real estate market that impelled NYCB — which operates more than 400 branches under brands including Flagstar Bank — to admit to mounting losses. After the bank rushed to project stability, including by releasing a new set of financial disclosures on Tuesday evening that one analyst termed a “late night news dump,” shares rose 7 percent on Wednesday. Whether its efforts will stick is an open question. NYCB executives, who just a week ago had been tight-lipped about the bank’s finances, opened up the books on Wednesday and laid out turnaround plans on a public conference call.

Tracy Warren cofounded Astarte Medical in 2016 to improve care for premature babies. Astarte, which sells software to standardize nutrition for babies in intensive care units, had raised $14 million in venture funding to date and landed contracts with four hospitals. Last year, the startup wasn't able to land as many new contracts as it hoped, with hospitals struggling to manage their slim margins. But Astarte ultimately decided not to make the promise to build AI into its tech for clinical decision-making. The startup is hoping to find a buyer by the end of the first quarter of the year.

Hong Kong CNN —Samsung posted its fourth straight quarter of slumping profits on Wednesday, capping off a dismal year that also saw it lose its crown as the world’s top smartphone maker. Despite that, Samsung is optimistic about a resurgence in demand for mobile devices this year. The South Korean firm has acknowledged “lower smartphone sales” during the fourth quarter, though it noted a pickup in demand for high-end smartphones compared to the previous three months. This year, however, the market is expected to recover gradually, “despite various potential obstacles, including interest rate policies and geopolitical issues,” Samsung said in a statement Wednesday. The company managed to command higher prices for memory chips in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, showing a slight “improved performance,” it added.

“We had a difficult start, conceding an early goal, but I told the players at half-time to keep playing the same way, not get confused,” Ivory Coast interim coach Emerse Fae told reporters after the match. “There was a lot of pressure before the match, and match day was too long for me,” he said. Former Ivory Coast coach Jean-Louis Gasset was remarkably sacked during the tournament after that 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea, as the team stood on the brink of an early elimination on home soil. “We must not stop here; we must continue working, maintain this morale, and keep playing match by match,” the coach asserted. For months, battered by President Biden’s dismal 2024 re-election polls, Democrats have been undergoing a kind of collective nervous breakdown over Mr. Biden’s re-election prospects against Donald Trump. Following Mr. Trump’s victory in New Hampshire and with the unofficial start of the general election campaign, there is no reason for the Biden team to panic. Polls at this stage of the race are almost always a referendum on the incumbent instead of a clear choice. Still, the president’s bad polls and a stubbornly low approval rating are, or should be, more than just grist for Mr. Biden’s critics. Joe Biden has yet to explain clearly why he’s running for a second term.

The guidance adds to Wall Street's concerns about health insurance company profits falling as medical costs jump. UnitedHealth on Friday also reported its own jump in medical costs, though it was less extreme than Humana's. Its forecast dragged down other health insurance stocks. Defeated DeSantis Bows to Trump in GOP Primary
  + stars: | 2024-01-22 | by ( Lauren Camera | Jan. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +5 min
Ron DeSantis was the conservative policy wunderkind considered the GOP's solution for reuniting the Republican Party in a post-Trump world. The announcement came just two days before the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire , with DeSantis polling in the single digits in the Granite State. Yet, like all of Trump’s other presidential primary challengers, DeSantis had difficulty escaping Trump’s penumbra and failed to dent the support of his MAGA movement. He consistently polled some 40% to 50% behind Trump among likely Republican primary voters, despite his campaign and supporting political action committees raising more than $100 million to break through. Indeed, DeSantis placed a distant second in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15, nabbing just 21% of the votes compared with 51% for Trump.

Before entering the 2024 presidential race, Ron DeSantis proudly touted his conservative record. The governor's fights with Disney didn't endear him to GOP primary voters in the way he had hoped. For decades, tourists have come to the state from all over the world to visit Walt Disney World. But while many GOP voters had a positive opinion of DeSantis, it didn't translate into many votes, no matter what he had done while tussling with Disney. A Haley victory would usher in a more competitive phase of a primary that Trump has so far dominated. President Joe Biden is not on the ballot, having made South Carolina the first formal stop on the Democratic primary calendar. But New Hampshire is sticking to tradition and hosting its own Democratic primary anyway. We're about to find out whether Republican primary voters agree. Furious about Biden's decision, the “Live Free or Die” state ignored the president's wishes and will host its own unsanctioned Democratic primary anyway.
