OTTAWA, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats from India amid a dispute over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Thursday, adding that Ottawa would not take retaliatory steps. Joly said India had threatened to unilaterally revoke the diplomats' official status by Friday unless they left. "Given the implications of India's actions on the safety of our diplomats, we have facilitated their safe departure from India," she told a news conference. "If we allow the norm of diplomatic immunity to be broken, no diplomats anywhere on the planet would be safe. India has dismissed as absurd Trudeau's suspicions that its agents were linked to the murder of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen whom New Delhi had labeled a "terrorist."

CNN —The Biden administration will restart deporting Venezuelans directly to Venezuela in an attempt to curb the record influx of crossings at the US-Mexico border, according to senior administration officials, marking a major shift in policy. “Repatriations are a key piece to this balanced approach.”Thursday’s announcement is the latest effort by the Biden administration to try to discourage migration to the US-Mexico border, while highlighting other lawful pathways available to certain migrants who want to migrate to the US. It’s also a recognition of the complicated – and unique – challenge for the Biden administration as it faces a historic wave of Venezuelan migrants. Mexico has agreed to take some, but it remains a difficult issue for administration and for cities receiving migrants. The record number of arrivals has strained resources in cities across the United States, with Democratic officials in New York and Chicago sounding the alarm. Frosty diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Venezuela had made it difficult for the U.S. to deport Venezuelans to their home country. Migration is the direct result of sanctions, the Venezuelan government added, repeating its frequent accusation that U.S. measures are a violation of international law. Washington has insisted Maduro must take steps toward free elections before it considers any further significant sanctions relief, though the U.S. has faced calls from some Latin American governments to take such action without further delay.
