FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The Dutch parent of pioneering Russian tech company Yandex is selling its operations in the country at a steeply discounted price of just over $5 billion to its Russia-based managers and oil company Lukoil, one of the biggest deals for Western-held companies to exit Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. He subsequently condemned Russia's invasion as “barbaric.” The Nasdaq exchange suspended trading in Yandex shares days after the invasion. After the sale, Yandex NV would be left with its international businesses — employing 1,300 people — including self-driving technology and generative artificial intelligence as well as a data center in Finland. Yandex NV Chairman John Boynton said the company had faced “exceptional challenges” since the start of the war. None of the purchasers have been sanctioned, Yandex NV said, and the cash part of the transaction would be conducted in Chinese yuan outside of Russia.

Read previewJust seven stocks accounted for the lion's share of returns for the S&P 500 in 2023. Piper SandlerIn a January 23 note to clients, he said that only three of the seven stocks are well-positioned to keep rising, while two are in a more neutral position and another two are loaded with "red flags." When analyzing the seven stocks, he looked at fundamental traits that make them a strong buy, as well as downside risks to the companies. On fundamentals, Alphabet and Meta each scored a one and Apple came in right behind with a two. But the remaining two stocks in the group — Tesla (TSLA) and Nvidia (NVDA) had a ton of downside risks, he said.

Fixed indexed annuity sales brought in a record $95.6 billion, up from 20% from the record hit the year prior. Indexed annuities earn interest that is calculated based on the changes within a market index, such as the S & P 500 or the Nasdaq 100. However, they also receive downside protection: They are credited zero interest if the index their annuity is tracking declines. The term of index annuities typically range from three to 15 years, according to Annuity.org . Fixed indexed annuities can also be complicated, warned David Blanchett, head of retirement research for PGIM DC Solutions.

Small caps are conspicuously absent from Wall Street's bull market party. The S & P 500 confirmed Friday that a new bull market has begun, breaking both its intraday and closing record high from January 2022. Year to date thus far, the S & P 500 is up more than 1%, while the Dow has climbed 0.5%. "We think it's when the Fed cuts rates not if; this boosts small more than large," he wrote in a Monday note. Not everyone on Wall Street is as optimistic that Fed rate cuts will be an outsized catalyst for small caps.

A forward-looking gauge of economic activity continued to soften in December, though the overall rate of decline improved in the last six months of 2023. The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index fell by 0.1% in December, below expectations, yet contracted by 2.9% over the past six months, down from 4.3% for the prior six-month period. “Despite the overall decline, six out of 10 leading indicators made positive contributions to the LEI in December. Moreover, other recent economic data – consumer sentiment, retail sales and jobless claims – has been positive and consistent with an expanding economy. The Fed indicated then that members of its monetary policy committee favored at least three cuts in rates this year.

Homebuilder sentiment improved in January, jumping 7 points to 44 on the National Association of Home Builders monthly index. Anything below 50 is still considered negative, but the index has now moved 10 points higher in the last two months. The increase coincides with a big drop in mortgage interest rates from around 8% in mid-October to the 6% range in December. Regionally, on a three-month moving average, builder confidence increased the most in the Northeast, the only area now in positive territory at 55. Sentiment was flat in the Midwest and rose slightly in the South and West.

The S & P 500 is in for yet another strong year, according to UBS. The firm lifted its year-end target on the S & P 500 from 4,850 to 5,150, representing 7.7% upside for the benchmark stock index from Friday's close. The S & P 500 ended last week at 4,783.83. This year's more dovish Federal Reserve policy supports higher valuations, Golub said, upping his 2024 earnings-per-share estimate on the S & P 500 by $10 to $235. "While the S & P 500 advanced throughout 2023, leadership has become more pro-cyclical over the past 3 months, an indication of investor optimism toward the economy," Golub said.

December's inflation data provided just enough evidence to show that the pace of price increases is continuing to cool while also serving up a reminder that the war isn't won yet. One is that regardless of the headline numbers, the parts of inflation that don't fluctuate as much have been fairly stubborn. So-called sticky inflation, which includes things such as housing costs, auto insurance, medical care services and household furnishings, are indeed holding higher. On a one-month annualized basis, the measure also was at 4.6%, but that's up a full percentage point from the previous month. Fed policymakers also are attuned to the relationship between wages and inflation.

Small-cap stocks could finally break out above their large-cap peers in 2024, according to Goldman Sachs portfolio strategists. Small caps lagged large caps by a wide margin in 2023, with the Russell 2000 climbing about 15% compared to a 24% gain for the S & P 500. Snider ties the optimistic outlook for small-cap stocks to Goldman's macroeconomic outlook for the coming year, which anticipates 2% growth in U.S. gross domestic product. The forecast 15% return for the Russell 2000 this year also matches the index's historical median return of 16% during presidential election years going back to 1984, Goldman argued. Club name Caterpillar was last year's ninth-best performer of the 30 stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrials Average , which gained 13.7% in 2023. Gautam Adani is the richest person in Asia again, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index's updated figures Friday. The founder and chairman of the Adani Group regained pole position in Asia after dethroning Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, who took the top spot after Hindenburg Research accused the Adani Group of "brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud" over decades. The report eroded investor confidence and wiped out billions in market value for Adani Group companies. The Adani Group has 10 publicly listed companies, including Adani Port which was 2.8% higher on Asia's Friday afternoon trading session. As of Friday, Adani's net worth stood at $97.6 billion and he was the world's 12th richest person, while Ambani's wealth stood at $97 billion and he was in 13th place, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

With interest rates expected to come down in 2024, real estate — a sector beloved for its steady income payments — could see upside in the new year. "When rates are low, a lot of income-oriented investors see that REIT dividend as very attractive, and they are willing to take the risks associated with equity investment to have this dividend payment." Jefferies is neutral on the office REIT sector but has raised its rating on Boston Properties to buy from hold. The senior housing occupancy rate was 84.4% in the third quarter of 2023, according to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care . That's up more than 6 percentage points from the pandemic low of 77.8%, but it's still off from the pre-pandemic occupancy rate of 87.1%.

– Thank you, Cathryn, San Francisco We certainly understand and agree it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a diversified portfolio that's not dominated by technology stocks. There are also what many investors would think of as tech companies in S & P 500 Communication Services , at an 8.6% weighting. After all, we would say Meta, Alphabet and Amazon are as much tech companies as Apple or Microsoft, with all three considered leaders in artificial intelligence. These are industrial technology companies, not the industrial companies of old. So, using some of the examples provided in the question: Yes, Microsoft and Apple are both considered Information Technology companies.
