Mario Tama | Getty ImagesSummer air travel is expected to soar in the United States. Last summer, a record-breaking summer for airports, there were air traffic jams and near collisions amid challenges in flight coordination. Based on air traffic patterns and airport density, New York City and Florida are subject to the highest risk of backups. "There is still a shortage of air traffic controllers, but it hasn't led to the worst outcomes that we were expecting when we were talking about the shortage of air traffic control workers even a year ago." With production delays, airlines pay billions to fly less fuel-efficient and more costly and aged jets.

Rival United Airlines — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. Luxury air travel and the United States didn't go together for many years — and might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters. And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

AdvertisementFor example, earlier this year, I paid about $100 to snag aisle seats on Finnair flights between New York and Helsinki. I want the freedom to move about the cabin wheneverThe reason I'll pay extra for the aisle seat is two-fold. I opted for a center-section aisle seat on an Air India flight in January, paying an extra $50 for it. The aisle seat lets me stretch an arm or leg out when needed, giving me just enough wiggle room. I paid for my aisle seat for a reason, so I'm within my right to say no.

AdvertisementPlus, I'm not convinced that Frontier and Spirit's recent addition of "premium" perks will give either a competitive edge. Frontier and Spirit offer 28 inches of pitch, while coach seats on all three mainline carriers start at 30 inches. ULCCs are not always cheaper once you do the mathIn my experience, mainline tickets are sometimes cheaper than Frontier or Spirit. New York CNN —Starbucks is the latest entrant in the value menu wars, joining its rivals in releasing new offers to lure back cash-strapped consumers. The offer, available all day, comes in two options: For $5, a customer can order a tall iced or hot coffee or an iced or hot tea paired with a croissant. For Starbucks, it’s part of broader changes rolling out this summer, which include a new iced coffee blend, updated its app with more accurate ordering times and new promotions. Starbucks is also making tweaks to its two-year-old partnership with Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program, which lets customers earn miles on every transaction. Beginning Wednesday, customers will only earn miles on Starbucks account reloads of $25 or more rather than per dollar spent at its cafes.

Delta Air Lines said Monday that it will bring its premium economy service to transcontinental flights in September, its latest attempt to boost sales of higher-priced tickets to customers willing to splurge for more space and perks. Premium economy is a relatively new class of service that major airlines offer on longer, mostly international flights. Delta customers who purchase standard economy tickets will be able to pay for upgrades to premium economy on the transcontinental flights. The seats were sold as extra legroom tickets, which are a rung below premium economy. Some American Airlines ' shorter domestic flights operate a similar model, featuring lie-flat seats but not the Flagship service offered on international flights.

One expert said eVTOLs fly at low altitudes and could create airspace and security challenges. The US's first electric vertical-takeoff and -landing aircraft are expected to fly commercial passengers as soon as 2025. It still needs further approvals to fly for airlines like United, but the latest certificate puts it one step closer.
