"He met with leaders of advanced industrial democracies for the first time since the pandemic began and amid fraught relations between China and the West. Most of Xi's meetings fueled a positive outlook for stabilizing relations."
The incident, at about 3:30 a.m. local time, followed reports of a tornado touching down in the area, county officials said on Wednesday morning. "It's very devastating," Montgomery County Commission member Isaiah Sankey said, noting that residents reported they heard tornado sirens about two minutes before the storm struck. The tornado was one of three dozen twisters that weather spotters in Mississippi and Alabama reported to the National Weather Service overnight. In Montgomery County, one of the hardest-hit areas, crews were clearing debris from roads and assessing the damage on Wednesday morning, Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said. Some 20,000 homes and businesses in Mississippi and Alabama remained without power on Wednesday afternoon, according to Poweroutage.us.
‘The Hours’ Review: A Woolf Pack of Divas at the Met

New York‘The Hours,” by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Greg Pierce , which had its world-premiere staged production at the Metropolitan Opera last Tuesday, is clever in concept. Its sources—the 1998 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Cunningham and the 2002 all-star film by Stephen Daldry —supply juicy roles for three women playing characters experiencing traumas in three separate eras, related through Virginia Woolf’s novel “Mrs. Dalloway.” The structure of opera permits techniques of simultaneity and overlap that exist in no other medium. From a marketing standpoint, the creation of “The Hours” was driven by soprano Renée Fleming , once the Met’s most beloved diva, whose 2017 “Der Rosenkavalier” at the house supposedly marked her retirement from staged opera. On Tuesday, she returned in the role of Clarissa Vaughan, custom tailored for her voice.
Instead, the coveted junior recruit was benched, due to a decision from the state’s governing body for high school sports. Meanwhile, in a growing number of states, including California, even high school athletes can enter contracts. But boosters can pay prospective students through NIL deals, as long as the money is not contingent on enrollment or athletic performance. A University of Miami booster has earmarked $10 million to sign players to NIL deals through his companies. Cunningham’s message to high school athletes is “the grass isn’t always greener,” even in California.
On Monday and Tuesday, the court got a taste of Musk’s testimony through short clips from his 2021 deposition in the litigation. In one clip, Musk dismissed the idea that the board should have discussed requiring that he spend more time with Tesla. The disputed Tesla package allows Musk to buy 1% of Tesla’s stock at a deep discount each time escalating performance and financial targets are met. Tesla has hit 11 of the 12 targets, according to court papers. The Musk case survived a motion to dismiss because it was determined he might be considered a controlling shareholder, which means stricter rules apply.

Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter, arrives to a trial regarding his Tesla pay package at the Delaware Court of Chancery in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S., November 16, 2022. Tesla shareholder Richard Tornetta sued Musk and the board in 2018 and hopes to prove that Musk used his dominance over Tesla’s board to dictate terms of the package, which did not require him to work at Tesla full-time. Musk, the world’s richest person, described how the automaker was struggling to survive in 2017, when the pay package was developed. The legal team for Musk and the Tesla directors have cast the pay package as a set of audacious goals that worked by driving 10-fold growth in Tesla’s stock value, to more than $600 billion from around $50 billion. The disputed Tesla package allows Musk to buy 1% of Tesla’s stock at a deep discount each time escalating performance and financial targets are met.

Washington, DC, real-estate firms who discriminated against low-income renters face a record fine. The historic settlement in DC could trigger harsher penalties for unfair landlords across the country, two housing experts said. The Section 8 program offers qualifying low-income households vouchers to subsidized rents in buildings not designated as affordable housing. Sedgwick Gardens is an apartment complex that DARO Management used to manage. The same study found that only 15% of DC landlords refused to accept vouchers.

WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Ted Budd defeated Democrat Cheri Beasley in North Carolina’s competitive Senate race Tuesday, NBC News projects, letting Republicans retain a seat that will be vacated by retiring Sen. Richard Burr. Both parties spent heavily in the race, though North Carolina Democrats accused the national party of abandoning Beasley in a tight election. And even when others didn’t, we believed in North Carolina and I still do. NBC News exit polls showed that most North Carolina voters rated national economic conditions as not good or poor. Past contests have made national Democrats wary of North Carolina, however.

It also adds more ammunition to the charged debate over seasonal time changes and could bolster political arguments for moving the U.S. to permanent daylight saving time. Daylight saving time is when many parts of the world set clocks back by one hour to shift sunlight earlier in the day, meaning sunsets then happen earlier. The U.S. Senate in March approved a bipartisan bill that would make daylight saving time standard for all states except Arizona and Hawaii. States in the northern U.S. would reduce collisions most from permanent daylight saving. “On the whole, we need a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the way daylight saving time impacts our health and environment,” Cunningham said.
The Virginia-based planemaker is trying to emerge from overlapping crises: the pandemic and the grounding of the 737 Max, its best-selling model, after fatal crashes. Boeing last month predicted it would deliver 375 MAX planes this year, lower than a July target of "low 400s." Boeing expects to gradually ramp up the rate to five airplanes per month. LONDON, Oct 31(Reuters) - Sterling fell on Monday, but was still headed for its largest monthly gain in over a year after the turbulence in British politics over the last few weeks finally appeared to subside. The Bank of England is likely to raise interest rates by another 75 basis points when it meets later this week. Hunt has ditched almost all the proposals in Truss's plan, returning a semblance of stability to UK markets and toning down a lot of the hawkishness around rate expectations. UK interest rates are currently expected to peak at around 4.87% in September next year, up from 2.25% right now. In the aftermath of Truss's so-called mini-budget, UK money markets showed traders expected rates to peak above 6% next September.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said Wednesday that he would back his state's defunct law banning same-sex marriage if the Supreme Court were to overturn its 2015 landmark gay marriage ruling. "Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think marriage ought to be between a man and a woman — just like I think that boys ought to play in boy sports and girls ought to play in girl sports," McMaster, 75, said. Cunningham appeared shocked, replying: "It's 2022 and Governor McMaster wants to ban same-sex marriage — you just heard that tonight, folks. If the landmark decision were reversed, it would once again fall to the states to decide on the legality of same-sex marriage. Lawmakers in Congress have introduced a measure that would federally permit same-sex marriage, the Respect for Marriage Act.

Fischer is also the author of Kentucky’s 2019 “trigger” law, which went into effect when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June and makes most abortions illegal in the state. This year, with 84 seats up for election in state supreme court races nationwide – the highest number in recent years, according to election tracking organization Ballotpedia – these down-ballot races are taking on a heightened significance and scrutiny. Four out of seven of Kentucky’s state Supreme Court seats are up on Nov. 8, with three of those races contested. But if the amendment loses, a legal challenge from the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood attempting to overturn the ban would move forward before the state Supreme Court. A ‘new frontier’In Montana, Republicans have accused the seven-member state Supreme Court of holding a “liberal bias,” particularly while Democratic governors filled court vacancies in recent years.
