CNN —In recent years, the giants of European horology have been locked in a heated battle to design the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. The stainless steel watch presented by Konstantin Chaykin in Geneva last week is the second prototype of his ThinKing model. Konstantin Chaykin has applied for patents for his utra-thin winding barrel, double balance wheel and strap design. He welcomed outside assessment, telling CNN that during the five-day Geneva Watch Days fair “hundreds of people” were able to inspect his creation. He was inspired to make one after being challenged by a client to design an ultra-thin watch of his own.

London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

Real estate tycoon Srettha becomes the fourth Thai premier in 16 years to be removed by verdicts by the same court, after it ruled he violated the constitution by appointing a minister who did not meet ethical standards. Deputy premier Phumtham Wechayachai is expected to take over as caretaker prime minister. Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

A 22-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with assault as a hate crime after the police said he yelled “Free Palestine” and “Do you want to die?” before stabbing a young man near a synagogue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn early Saturday morning. The 22-year-old man, Vincent Sumpter, was charged with second-degree assault as a hate crime in the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday on Kingston Avenue, around the corner from the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement on Eastern Parkway. Rabbi Behrman said that Mr. Dabrowskin, who is Jewish and about 30 years old, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and was expected to recover from his wounds. “This is obviously a very serious incident, and there has been a lot of antisemitic rhetoric,” Rabbi Behrman said. “I’m concerned that unless this rhetoric stops, it’s going to become more common, sadly.”
