It is effectively an unregulated, offshore bank that’s become a tent pole of the $3 trillion crypto industry. The tether token is known as a stablecoin, a kind of crypto that was created to hold its value steady while others, like bitcoin and ether, swing wildly minute to minute. The company is now one of the biggest players in crypto, with a daily trading volume that eclipses even bitcoin, the world’s most popular token. Tether told the WSJ in a statement that any suggestion it was involved in criminal activity was “outrageous” and that the company works actively with law enforcement to combat illicit activity. But Lutnick, a Bitcoin enthusiast whose Wall Street firm manages Tether’s stockpile of Treasury bills, has eagerly defended the stablecoin issuer.

On Wednesday morning, the media giant confirmed that it is spinning off most of its cable channels, including MSNBC and CNBC, into a separate publicly traded company. The new company doesn’t have a formal name yet — Comcast is simplycalling it “SpinCo” — a suitable label since employees’ heads are spinning with questions. Discovery, spin off their cable channels too? How might the cable bundle business model be impacted? “This is a very clear, direct statement by Comcast” that “they are exiting the cable network business,” Greenfield said.

TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. "The fourth quarter is off to a strong start, and we are excited about our opportunities for the holiday selling season. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. TJX is standing by its comparable sales guidance of 3% growth for the full year, just shy of the 3.2% growth that StreetAccount analysts had expected. It raised its pretax profit margin outlook from 11.2% to 11.3%, which matches StreetAccount's expectations, along with its earnings per share guidance.

Those hopes fall on Blackwell, which is Nvidia's name for a family of server products based around its next-generation AI chip. Some of Nvidia's most important end-customers have already received some Blackwell chips, the company confirmed on Wednesday. "We will we'll ship more Blackwells next quarter than this [quarter], and we'll ship more Blackwells the quarter after that than than our first quarter," Huang said. A limiting factor to producing more Blackwell systems is the amount of components that Nvidia's suppliers can provide, Huang said. Williams-Sonoma earned $1.96 per share on $1.80 billion in revenue, while analysts surveyed by LSEG had anticipated just $1.78 in earnings per share and $1.79 billion in revenue. Target — Shares plunged more than 21% after the big-box retailer disappointed on third-quarter earnings and revenue estimates and cut its full-year guidance, just three months after raising that forecast. Target reported only a slight uptick in customer traffic as CEO Brian Cornell noted "lingering softness in discretionary categories." That is better than the $1.57 in earnings per share that analysts were expecting, per FactSet. Dolby earned 61 cents per share in its fiscal fourth quarter, higher than analysts' forecast of 45 cents per share, according to FactSet.

AdvertisementCNBC anchors projected an air of mild panic about the news that Comcast would spin off the network. The media conglomerate announced it would create a new entity for most of its cable networks. CNBC anchors turned their signature irreverent style on themselves on Wednesday, as their parent Comcast became a headline in announcing plans to spin off the business news network along with many other cable assets. Analysts — including those featured on CNBC — did not hold back on Wednesday about what the spinoff means for the cable network. One of the country's biggest cable TV companies doesn't want its cable networks anymore. That's the pitch Comcast is making Wednesday as it announces plans to split off almost all of its cable TV networks into a new company. Into the spinco goes every cable network Comcast owns except for Bravo. For the record: Comcast says it thinks the cable networks it is ditching can be successful on their own. And as I said last month: Comcast is getting rid of its basic cable networks for the same reason everyone who owns basic cable networks would like to get rid of their cable networks.

Wang was also ordered to forfeit $11 billion, the same as the other co-defendants. When given the opportunity to address the court, Wang said he was deeply sorry to all the customers and investors in FTX. Roos also noted that Wang was the first FTX employee to walk through the government's door but the last to be sentenced, as the FTX criminal proceedings come to a close. On the day that Nvidia is reporting earnings post-close, there isn't much attention on anything else, especially not chemical companies. There's no use in trying to bottom fish a stock that continues to make new lows… until it actually shows a marked change of character. If the stock can, in fact, see an upside follow through soon, then the measured move target would be up at $138. Past performance is no guarantee of future results, but patterns have the tendency to repeat – both over the short-term and long-term. Brisbane, Australia CNN —The Australian government is threatening multimillion dollar fines for social media companies that breach a proposed ban on children under 16 from using their service. “The legislation places the onus on social media platforms, not parents or children, to ensure protections are in place,” Rowland said. Many parents and pro-ban campaigners have lauded the bill as a long overdue measure to impose accountability on tech companies for tools Australian children use online. Both sides agree about the risks of children spending too much time online, and the need for tech companies to do more to safeguard their products. The Australia government’s also commissioned the UK consortium Age Check Certification Scheme to trial age verification technology, to aid efforts to keep children off social media platforms.

Luxury retailer Burberry 's shares present an attractive investment opportunity after the company revealed a new turnaround strategy, according to hedge fund manager David Neuhauser. The stock, which is also traded in the U.S. and Germany, remains down around 40% year-to-date, however. UBS said Burberry was the only luxury retailer not to report "weak organic sales growth" in the latest quarter. "I think Burberry has a good turnaround in place with a new CEO," Neuhauser added, while cautioning that the recovery might take longer than expected. "I think over some time, a good turnaround by Burberry, with strong leadership, could really see the stock price increase.

The surgeon general’s 837-page report on tobacco use found that 37.8% of gay, lesbian and bisexual U.S. adults have tried electronic cigarettes, compared with just 16.5% of their straight counterparts. He said that LGBTQ people use tobacco products at higher rates largely because of “long-standing stigma” within health care settings. Still, 36 million U.S. adults and 760,000 middle and high school students smoke tobacco products, according to the report. Since 2014, the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. youths and young adults is e-cigarettes. “These and other noncombustible tobacco products such as nicotine pouches have the potential to undermine overall progress in preventing and reducing young people’s use of tobacco products,” the authors stated.

The long-standing promise of a ban on menthol cigarettes, which has been years in the making, is unlikely to move forward before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The FDA announced it would begin the process of banning menthol tobacco cigarettes in 2021. Since then, it has done all it is legally authorized to do to put the finalized rule to ban menthol in motion. But it’s politics, not public health, that is likely to keep menthol cigarettes on the market as Biden’s term ends. Murthy deferred questions about whether the Biden administration would push the ban through as one of its final acts.
